Chapter 22 - Thumper's Roar

The moment Jason and his party stepped through the portal, the world twisted.

The sunlit peace of Whispering Grove vanished in an instant, swallowed by a choking, unnatural darkness.

The air grew heavy and cold, thick with the stench of decay and damp earth.

Twisted, skeletal trees clawed at a bruised-purple sky where no sun or moon dared to shine.

This wasn't the Whispering Grove anymore; it was the Grove of Screams.

[System: You have entered the Hell Mode dungeon, Grove of Screams. All monster attributes have been increased by 200%. Your party will be subjected to the 'Hell's Roar' phenomenon. Upon death, penalty is increased by 100%.]

"Whoa," Jay Antonio whispered, his bravado from outside evaporating.

"Okay, this is… a lot spookier than the brochure suggested."

Munch, the Summoner, was already nibbling nervously on a piece of bread from his inventory.

"I have a bad feeling about this place. It feels like it's watching us."

The other new members, Tank and Dreamer, were visibly terrified.

The sheer oppressive atmosphere of a Hell Mode dungeon was a shock to the system for first-timers.

They clutched their weapons, their knuckles white.

Suddenly, a deep, guttural moan rolled through the warped forest, breaking the silence like a warning from the dark.

It wasn't just a sound; it was a wave of psychic pressure that washed over them.

[Hell's Roar!]

The world seemed to slow down, their limbs turning to lead.

A feeling of profound dread filled their minds, making it hard to think, let alone fight.

System: You have been affected by Hell's Roar.

All attributes decreased by 20% for 1 minute. Movement speed reduced by 30%.

"What was that?!" Solitary Blade grunted, struggling to lift his sword.

"That's the Hell's Roar," Jason explained calmly, his own body resisting the effect far better due to his superior stats and title.

It's a random debuff that will hit us throughout the dungeon.

We have to fight through it.

Dreamer, stay close to Tank.

Solitary, you and Jay are on my flanks.

Munch, keep your pet on defensive.

Tank, get ready.

We have company.

As he spoke, several pairs of glowing red eyes ignited in the shadows ahead.

From the gloom, three creatures hopped into the faint light.

They looked like rabbits, but these were no cuddly critters.

Their fur was matted and black as night, their teeth were long, sharp needles, and their eyes burned with malevolence.

[Shadow Hare - Elite] [Level 2]

[HP: 700/700]

"Tank, pull one. Just one," Jason commanded.

Tank, fighting against the sluggishness of the debuff, raised his shield and banged it with his sword, a metallic clang cutting through the eerie silence.

"Hey, ugly! Over here!"

One of the Shadow Hares hissed, its ears flattening against its skull.

It crouched low and then launched itself forward, a black blur of motion.

"Shield up!" Jason ordered.

Tank planted his feet and braced.

The Shadow Hare collided with his shield with a sickening CRUNCH.

Despite his preparedness, Tank was thrown back a step, his health dropping by a solid 20%.

"Dreamer, heal!"

Dreamer, the Oracle, snapped out of her fear and a gentle, green light enveloped Tank, restoring his health.

"It's so strong!" Tank grunted, struggling to hold his ground.

"That's Hell Mode for you," Jason said, his eyes scanning the two remaining Shadow Hares, which were watching hungrily but hadn't moved in yet.

Something was wrong. In his past life, these monsters always attacked in a pack.

Jay, Solitary, get ready to attack the one on Tank.

Munch, send your Earth Elemental to distract the one on the left, Jason commanded, his mind racing.

He was baiting a trap.

As his team engaged the first Hare, Jason's eyes remained fixed on a particularly dark patch of shadow behind the third, unmoving Hare.

He subtly positioned himself, pretending to focus on the main fight.

He saw a faint shimmer in the air, a distortion that a normal player would miss.

There you are.

The third Shadow Hare suddenly hissed and charged, not at Tank, but straight at their healer, Dreamer.

It was a classic pincer move designed to wipe out a party's support.

But just as the Hare leaped, an even faster, larger shadow detached itself from the darkness behind it.

A humanoid figure, cloaked in living shadow, materialized with a dagger in each hand, aimed directly at Jason's back.

[Gloom Stalker - Special Elite] [Level 2]

[HP: 1,458/1,458]

"Now!" Jason roared.

He didn't turn.

Instead, he activated [Phantom Kill].

A perfect, shimmering duplicate of himself appeared a meter away, continuing its charge towards the main fight.

The real Jason, however, spun on his heel with impossible speed.

The wind shrieked around him as he moved.

BOOM!

The ground beneath his feet cracked as he exploded into motion.

The Gloom Stalker's daggers, aimed for his back, met nothing but air.

The assassin's eyes widened in shock behind its shadowy cowl.

Jason's Abyssal Blade was already a black streak of light.

"[Chop]!"

The sword connected with the Gloom Stalker's side.

-42! A respectable number, but the creature's defense was high.

The Gloom Stalker retaliated instantly, its daggers a blur of silver.

Jason didn't back down.

He activated [Parry].

CLANG!

A shower of sparks erupted as Jason's sword perfectly intercepted the double-dagger strike.

The force of the blow sent a tremor up his arm, but he held firm.

Using the momentum, he flowed into his next attack.

"[Thundering Flash]!"

Three arcs of brilliant, white energy erupted from his blade.

They were so fast they seemed to tear through the very fabric of the air.

SWISH!

SWISH!

SWISH!

-75!

-90! (Critical!)

-78!

The Gloom Stalker screeched in pain as the blasts sent it stumbling backward.

The party turned, their jaws dropping at the sight of Jason single-handedly suppressing a monster that looked infinitely more terrifying than the Shadow Hares.

"Holy… what is that thing?!" Jay yelled.

"Focus on your targets!" Jason's voice cut through their shock.

"This one is mine!"

He pressed his advantage.

The Gloom Stalker was fast, but Jason, with all his points poured into Agility and his past life's combat sense, was faster.

He became a whirlwind of black steel and silver light.

Every step he took was precise, every dodge a hair's breadth from death, every strike a calculated blow.

The sounds of their battle filled the grove, the high-pitched shing of clashing blades, the guttural snarls of the monster, and the low, constant hum of Jason's immense speed causing the air to vibrate.

Finally, seeing its health plummet, the Gloom Stalker tried a desperate move.

It faded into the shadows, attempting to go invisible for a fatal ambush.

"You're not getting away!" Jason smirked.

He plunged his sword into the ground.

"[Abyssal Bind]!"

Tendrils of pure darkness erupted from the earth, snaking through the shadows and latching onto the invisible Stalker, revealing its silhouette.

It was trapped, completely immobilized.

Jason walked calmly towards the struggling creature.

"Game over."

He raised his sword and unleashed a final, devastating [Thundering Flash].

The Gloom Stalker let out one last, agonized shriek before dissolving into particles of light, leaving behind a small pile of loot, including a shimmering skill book.

The party had just finished off the last of the Shadow Hares and stared at Jason in stunned silence.

He had just soloed a Special Elite monster, one they hadn't even known was there, without taking a single hit.

Jason simply picked up the loot.

"Don't get complacent. That was just the warm-up."

After several more grueling fights, they finally reached a clearing.

In the center sat a colossal, muscle-bound rabbit, nearly ten feet tall.

Its fur was scarred and gray, and its eyes glowed with a psychopathic red light.

It was gnawing on a massive, blood-soaked carrot that looked suspiciously like a femur.

Surrounding it were seven more Elite Shadow Hares, acting as its royal guards.

This was the first boss: Thumper, the Maniacal.

[Thumper, the Maniacal - Chieftain] [Level 3]

[HP: 6,000/6,000]

The party froze.

The sheer pressure emanating from the boss was suffocating.

"We… we have to fight that?" Munch stammered, his bread-nibbling becoming frantic.

"And its seven bodyguards," Solitary Blade added grimly.

"We can't fight them all at once. We'd be annihilated," Tank said, his shield feeling woefully inadequate.

"We won't," Jason said, his eyes glinting. He picked up a small, dead leaf.

"We just need to be smarter than them."

He pointed to one of the guards on the far edge of the group.

"Munch, I need your Flame Sprite. Jay, get your [Dark Bind] ready. Tank, prepare to taunt. We're going to pull them apart, one by one, starting with that one."

He explained his plan: a complex sequence of luring, binding, and tanking that required perfect timing.

One mistake, and they'd have a ten-foot-tall harbinger of death and his seven minions turning them into paste.

The plan worked flawlessly.

They managed to pull and eliminate all seven of the guards, leaving the Chieftain alone.

Thumper, noticing his minions were gone, finally stood to his full, terrifying height.

He tossed aside his femur-carrot, a low, rumbling growl building in his chest.

"Alright, team. This is it," Jason said, taking his position.

"Tank, you have aggro. Dreamer, focus everything on keeping him alive. DPS, hit it with everything you've got when I give the signal. Watch out for its [Death Stomp] and its [Frenzied Bite]."

Tank let out a war cry and charged, slamming his shield into Thumper's leg.

The battle for the Grove of Screams had begun.

The fight was a brutal, desperate affair.

Thumper was a monster of pure, unadulterated rage, its attacks causing the very ground to tremble.

When its health dropped to 30%, it went berserk.

Its fur bristled, its muscles bulged, and its speed doubled.

It was a blur of gray fur and red-eyed fury.

"It's going to use its ultimate!" Jason shouted over the chaos.

"Brace yourselves!"

Thumper reared its head back, its massive chest expanding as it took in a deep, world-ending breath.

A terrifying, high-pitched whine began to fill the air, a prelude to a roar that felt like it could shatter their very souls.

The party watched in horror, knowing that whatever came next, they might not survive it.
