Chapter 7 - A Father's Trial

Hope stared into the night sky from the rooftop, the wind tugging at her scarf like it wanted her to let go of everything.

Her chest was tight. She couldn't sleep.

Not with Ella pregnant.

Not with her father changing into someone she didn't recognize… or maybe didn't want to.

*Was it too late to forgive him?*

*Would forgiving him mean forgetting everything her mother went through?*

---

Downstairs, Kelvin sat on the couch, turning a coin over in his fingers. A habit he picked up since losing his sight.

Ella walked in slowly, her hand resting protectively on her belly.

"You haven't slept."

"I don't deserve rest," he murmured.

She sat beside him. "You've changed."

"I don't know if it's enough."

Ella touched his hand. "Try to become the man your daughter *wishes* she had."

Kelvin nodded.

"I want to give this child something better," he said. "Not money. Not power. Peace."

---

Later that day, Hope returned from the street, carrying a small box.

She walked to Kelvin and dropped it beside him. "Open it."

His hands fumbled with the box until he found what was inside.

A pair of tiny baby shoes.

"For the child you don't deserve," Hope said, "but the sibling I don't want to hate."

Kelvin's throat tightened. "Thank you."

"I'm not forgiving you," she warned. "But I'm watching. One wrong move, and I walk."

Then she walked away, but this time… not in anger.

---

Just as hope was peeking through, a black car pulled up across the street.

A figure stepped out.

*DonVico*, one of Kelvin's former business rivals—the one he once betrayed in a shady land deal. Word was he had ties to foreign gangs. Dangerous ones.

And he had not forgotten.

He lit a cigar, watched the apartment from afar, and made a call.

"He's still breathing. Let's change that."
