Chapter 27: Editor's Arrival and Eriri's Visit
Next, Iida Ayano and Sawamura Sayuri signed a work cooperation agreement.
According to the original plan, the first volume of Attack on Titan, which consists of four chapters, would be serialized in four consecutive issues of Manga Jump.
As for Volume 2, further arrangements would depend on Lucien D. Blackthorn's physical condition and his ability to continue creating. If he managed to produce more content in the future, the contract would be extended.
Iida Ayano also mentioned that she would visit Lucien in the hospital in a few days. If he continued creating, she would become his official editor-in-charge.
The cooperation went smoothly, and both parties enjoyed a warm and positive discussion.
---
After returning home, Sayuri Sawamura relayed the entire conversation to her daughter.
Eriri Spencer Sawamura was thrilled. The fact that Lucien was receiving this kind of attention validated her belief that he was a true genius.
Still, a lingering sense of pity weighed on her.
The image of Lucien's pale and fatigued expression remained vivid in her mind. She hadn't visited him in the past two days—yesterday was Friday, and today was Saturday.
"I'll go tomorrow," she decided with determination.
---
On Sunday afternoon, Lucien completed the first three chapters of Slam Dunk.
His mother, now a devout fan of his, eagerly awaited each completed chapter. As soon as he finished one, she would immediately take it to read.
She had once disapproved of manga. As a university art professor, she had focused on traditional Japanese and Western art, never considering manga to be "serious" work. But her perspective had shifted.
Now, she appreciated manga as both art and storytelling. Even more, she appreciated her son's brilliance.
Lucien's father, though less interested in manga, was pleased to see his son doing what he loved.
After Lucien finished his meal, Eriri arrived at the hospital.
Lucien's mother exchanged a few friendly words with her, then stepped out of the room to give them privacy.
"Lucien, are you feeling any better?" Eriri asked, sitting by the bed.
Lucien gave a faint smile. "Still the same…"
Though she had come in cheerful spirits, Eriri's mood darkened the moment she saw his pale face.
"Hey, Sawamura-san, let me show you what I've been drawing," Lucien said, attempting to lift the mood.
He retrieved a notebook from his side and handed it to her.
"You finished this so quickly?" she asked, surprised by his pace.
Lucien's creative speed was astounding—even a prodigy like Eriri couldn't match it.
"I've only finished the first three chapters. Just a draft, really," he said.
Eriri nodded and flipped open the notebook.
The cover bore the title Slam Dunk, drawn in a bold font, with an illustration of a tall boy in a basketball uniform at the center.
"Slam Dunk? Is this a sports manga?"
"Yes."
"I thought you'd stick to things like Attack on Titan," she said, intrigued.
Eriri wasn't normally a fan of sports manga, so she was a bit skeptical—but she began reading anyway.
Within moments, she was giggling.
Sakuragi Hanamichi's antics were hilariously exaggerated. His confidence, absurd misunderstandings, and temper tantrums made her laugh out loud.
"Is this musclehead Sakuragi really the main character? He's too funny!" she chuckled.
Lucien watched her laugh, silently captivated.
When Eriri smiled like that—canines peeking out, eyes gleaming—it was adorable.
He tried to keep his composure, but inside, he was losing it.
How can she be this cute?
Is this what they call the blonde twin-tail effect?
"Eri, stop laughing…" he muttered to himself.
It was the first time he'd seen her so openly happy since his arrival in this world.
Eventually, she calmed down, and Lucien took a quiet breath of relief.
"Lucien, Sakuragi seems kind of violent. Is someone like him really fit to be a protagonist?" Eriri asked, her brow furrowed.
She had read countless manga, and most followed the mold: protagonists were brave, righteous, calm, and clever. Sakuragi was... none of those things.
He was impulsive, goofy, and always picking fights.
"He's not what you'd call conventional," Lucien admitted. "But keep reading—he'll surprise you."
"Really?" she said, skeptically turning the page.
Moments later, her eyes widened.
"Wait, who's this? Rukawa Kaede? He's... he's amazing!" she said, stars in her eyes.
Lucien grinned. Of course she liked the cool, quiet type.
"He's the rival," Lucien explained. "But Sakuragi's still the main character."
Eriri looked slightly disappointed but kept reading.
Then her expression changed again. "Why does Sakuragi try to hit Rukawa? That's too much!"
"They'll become comrades eventually," Lucien assured her.
"Still, that's way too violent…" she pouted, though clearly invested.
She flipped a few more pages, only to realize that the content ended there.
"That's it? What happens next?" she asked, looking at him with eager eyes.
Lucien smiled. "You'll just have to wait for the next chapter."
