The courtyard was quiet except for the sound of wind brushing against the stone tiles. The girls were stretched out in various spots, relaxing after the chaos of yesterday's fight. Rias and Akeno were still recovering — their bodies had healed thanks to Kaelthar's power, but the drain of their match lingered in their muscles.
Rias sat on a bench with her legs crossed, a smug little smile tugging at her lips. Akeno was sitting nearby, pretending to readjust her stockings, but anyone with eyes could tell she was just sulking.
Kaelthar stood at the center, hands behind his back, watching them like a general who knew another battle was about to begin.
"Today," he said, glancing between Yasaka and Koneko, "is your turn."
Koneko looked up from her seat, calmly setting down the grilled fish she'd been nibbling on. Her golden eyes locked on Yasaka. "Fine by me."
Yasaka smirked, her tails swaying lazily. "Try not to hold back. I'd hate for this to end in ten seconds."
From the sidelines, Kunou perked up immediately, tail wagging. "Mama's gonna win!" she chirped.
Kaelthar raised a hand, and in an instant, the courtyard vanished. The group found themselves standing in the familiar barren wasteland — an endless stretch of cracked earth and jagged rock towers under a sky that never changed. It had repaired itself completely since yesterday's match, every crater and shattered stone restored.
"Separate dimension again?" Rias asked, raising an eyebrow.
Kaelthar gave her a sidelong glance. "If you fought here at full power, the courtyard would be gone. And so would half the mountain."
That shut her up.
He placed Yasaka and Koneko exactly one hundred meters apart, his voice calm. "Same rules as yesterday. Full power allowed. Don't kill each other."
Koneko rolled her shoulders, the faint glow of Touki already wrapping her body. Yasaka didn't even move — she just folded her arms, tails flicking lazily behind her.
"Begin."
Koneko exploded forward, her leap cracking the ground beneath her feet. A sonic boom echoed across the wasteland as she closed the distance in less than a second. Her fist shot forward like a piston.
BAM!
Yasaka caught the punch with one hand. The impact sent a shockwave tearing through the ground, sending shards of rock flying in all directions.
Kunou's eyes sparkled as she clutched her snack tighter. "Whoa… mama's so cool…"
Kaelthar caught a small movement from the corner of his eye. Rias had shifted onto his lap, subtly pressing against him. "Stop," he murmured without looking at her.
"This is my reward for winning," Rias said smugly, pressing a little harder just to annoy him.
"You barely won," Akeno cut in, her voice flat, though her eyes flickered with irritation.
Rias turned her head, her smirk widening. "A win is a win."
"Both of you," Kaelthar said evenly, "focus on the fight before I drop you in there too."
That shut them up.
Back in the ring, Koneko wrenched her fist free and twisted, sending a lightning-fast roundhouse kick at Yasaka's ribs. Yasaka blocked with her forearm, sliding back a few meters from the force.
Koneko didn't let her breathe. She darted in again, fists and feet a blur, each strike wrapped in dense, refined Touki. Every hit sounded like a sledgehammer striking stone.
"She's faster than before," Akeno muttered, eyes narrowing.
Rias leaned forward. "And stronger. That's Kaelthar's training for you."
But Yasaka wasn't breaking a sweat. She weaved through Koneko's flurry with minimal movement, her counters sharp and precise — a short jab to the shoulder, a low sweep aimed at the legs, the kind of attacks meant to disrupt rhythm rather than overpower.
"She's not even taking it seriously," Rias said flatly.
"She doesn't have to," Akeno replied. "Koneko's at peak high-class power. Yasaka's in Satan-class. That's a canyon of difference."
Koneko's growl cut through the air. Her body shimmered as white fur spread across her ears and tail — her kitsune form, unlocked through Kaelthar's guidance. The surge of power slammed into Yasaka like a wave.
"Ultimate-class," Kaelthar noted under his breath.
Yasaka's eyes lit up with faint amusement. "Better. Come on then."
Koneko vanished in a blur, reappearing behind Yasaka mid-strike. Yasaka tilted her head just enough for the punch to whistle past her ear, then elbowed backward. The hit connected, sending Koneko tumbling through a stone tower that exploded into dust.
Kunou gasped, clutching her snack tighter. "Mama's amazing! But… Koneko's tough!"
The dust settled, and Koneko emerged, eyes sharp. She darted toward another cluster of rock towers, disappearing among them.
"She's using the terrain," Rias noted.
Kaelthar's lips curled faintly. "Good. She's remembering what I told her."
A faint crack sounded from the left. Yasaka's ears twitched — but instead of Koneko, a chunk of rock pulsed faintly with stored Touki.
Decoy.
Koneko came in from the right, her punch clipping Yasaka's shoulder. The older kitsune staggered a step, then glanced back over her shoulder with a smirk.
"Impressive. But not enough."
Koneko snarled, launching another flurry, this time feinting high before sweeping low, kicking up dust to obscure her movements. Yasaka responded by swirling her hands, conjuring a burst of wind magic that shredded the dust cloud.
Nothing.
Her instincts screamed a half-second before impact. Koneko dropped from above, all her Touki compressed into her fist, aiming squarely for Yasaka's temple.
Yasaka caught the strike, their energies colliding in a shockwave that split the ground beneath them. "You're clever," she said quietly. "But clever won't beat experience."
Her free hand shot forward, striking Koneko in the gut with a Touki-coated palm. The blow sent Koneko skidding across the ground, breathless but refusing to stay down.
From the sidelines, Rias crossed her arms. "She's stubborn, I'll give her that."
"She's more than stubborn," Kaelthar said. "She's learning mid-fight."
Koneko pushed herself up, wiping blood from her lip. Her eyes burned with determination. Without warning, she charged again, weaving between the scattered rocks, bouncing from one to the next to keep her trajectory unpredictable.
She launched herself forward — but Yasaka sidestepped and slammed a palm into Koneko's side, flooding her body with her own Touki to disrupt her flow.
Koneko crumpled, unconscious before she hit the ground.
The wasteland fell silent.
Kaelthar appeared beside them in an instant. He kissed Yasaka's cheek lightly. "Good job."
Then he crouched and gently lifted Koneko into his arms, holding her princess-style. "You too. You fought well." His hand glowed faintly as he began healing her.
Rias stood and smirked at Yasaka. "Enjoy it while it lasts. I'll beat you one day."
Akeno crossed her arms. "Same here."
Yasaka chuckled, her golden eyes glinting. "We'll see about that."
Kunou bounded over and jumped into her mother's arms. "Mama! That was awesome! You were so fast! And boom! And pow! It was epic!"
Yasaka laughed, holding her daughter close. "Glad you enjoyed the show."
Kaelthar looked at all of them, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Rest up. The real battles are still ahead."
The wind carried the smell of dust and stone across the wasteland as the group began to vanish, Kaelthar's dimension folding them back to the courtyard.
