Chapter 5 - Shadows of the past

The morning light filtered weakly through the curtains of the hospital room, casting a dim glow over Dito's tiny figure. The beeping machines and distant footsteps formed a faint symphony of life and uncertainty. Livia sat beside her brother's bed, holding his fragile hand as if to will him back to health.

Reynaldi stood nearby, watching her silently. His eyes were dark, shadowed with concern and guilt. He had spent the night pacing the hotel room, haunted by the unknown dangers lurking outside. The encrypted message from last night's ominous warning still echoed in his mind.

The door opened softly, and a nurse entered with a tray of medicine. She offered a gentle smile, but her eyes betrayed concern. "His condition is stable for now. But it's touch and go. We're doing everything we can."

Livia nodded, her throat tight. "Thank you." Her voice was barely a whisper.

Reynaldi stepped forward. "We'll stay here as long as you need."

The nurse nodded and left, closing the door quietly behind her. Silence returned to the room, thick with unspoken fears.

Livia finally looked at Reynaldi, her eyes brimming with tears. "I don't know what I'd do if I lost him. I promised myself I'd do anything to save him."

He hesitated, then gently took her trembling hand. "You're stronger than you think. And I swear—I won't let anything happen to him. Or to you."

Her lips trembled, but she managed a faint smile. "Thank you… for everything."

Reynaldi's jaw clenched. "It's not enough. Not yet. We need to find out who's behind this—who's trying to hurt your brother and us."

Her eyes widened with suspicion. "Do you think someone's after us? Or just Dito?"

He looked away, his expression unreadable. "I don't know. But I do know someone is watching. And they're dangerous."

---

**Meanwhile, outside the hospital,** in the shadows of Jakarta's bustling streets, a figure lurked in the darkness. Clad in black, with a hood pulled low, they watched the hospital from afar, eyes fixed on the entrance.

Their phone buzzed softly—an encrypted message: **"Stay alert. They're vulnerable now."**

The figure smirked in the darkness, then disappeared into the night.

---

**Back at the hotel,** Reynaldi finally sat alone in his room, staring out over the city skyline. His mind was racing with questions—about the mysterious threats, the secret enemies, and the dark past he kept buried deep.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small locket. Inside was a faded photograph—him and a woman, young and smiling. A ghost from his past.

He clenched his jaw.

*Who's really behind all this?*

And more importantly—**how much did they know about him?**

---

**Later that evening,** in a quiet, dimly lit café, Rania sat alone, her face shadowed by her long hair. She was lost in thought, swirling her coffee absently.

Her phone vibrated in her hand. She glanced at the screen—an unknown number.

She hesitated, then answered.

"Rania," a voice whispered through the line. "You're playing a dangerous game. Be careful. They're onto us."

Her heart skipped a beat. "Who's 'they'?"

"No one you want to cross," the voice warned. "Stay in line. Or everything will fall apart."

She clenched her fists. Her plan was unraveling faster than she expected, and she knew—her secrets wouldn't stay hidden forever.

---

**Back at the hospital,** Dito's condition remained fragile. The doctors worked tirelessly, but the danger was far from over.

Livia sat beside him, holding her brother's tiny hand, tears streaming down her face.

"I promise, Dito," she whispered. "I'll do anything to keep you safe. Even if it means risking everything."

Reynaldi joined her, his face grim. "We need to find who's behind this. And fast."

She looked at him, her eyes filled with desperation. "Do you think… it's someone inside the company? Or worse?"

He nodded slowly. "It's possible. Someone close to us, feeding Hendra—someone we trust."

Her heart sank. Trust was becoming a dangerous game.

**Later that night,** back at the hotel, Reynaldi stared at the city lights, lost in thought. His mind was haunted by ghosts from his past—secrets he had kept buried for years.

He reached for his phone and dialed a number, voice low and urgent.

"Get me everything on Lina Arka," he commanded. "And find out who's been secretly watching us. I want answers."

As the line went dead, he looked out over the city, knowing that the shadows of his past—and present—were closing in.

And the worst was yet to come.
