Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: Dragonhide Wand (Part 2)

Gary quickly handed him the cloth bag from his pocket. Taking the dragonhide, the man opened the cloth bag without counting, pulled out his wand, held it horizontally above the bag, and then put it away.

Then he yawned, rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and lowered his head to write something in a ledger.

Gary took the dragonhide and walked straight out of the shop. Releasing his nose, he finally felt the air was fresher.

He returned home without stopping, intending to make a wand holster from the dragonhide.

He wrapped the dragonhide around his wand to measure it. As soon as the wand touched the surface of the dragonhide, it suddenly trembled violently. Whether it was due to the intense vibration or something from the wand's core, Gary could hear a clanging sound from the wand, like the sound of weapons clashing, which was quite piercing.

Gary covered the entire wand with the dragonhide. The pitch-black dragonhide originally had countless regularly shaped dark grids. He guessed there were once dragon scales on it. When the dragonhide perfectly conformed to the wand, these countless dark grids actually lit up one by one, shining with a metallic glow. The dragonhide automatically wrapped itself around the wand. Gary had originally envisioned using a Sticking Charm to bond the two, but unexpectedly, the dragonhide directly integrated with the wand.

What exactly is the origin of this wand?

Gary only knew that this wand had a vine wood body, a dragon heartstring core, and was twelve inches long.

The thought that arose after returning from the Shrieking Shack resurfaced: should he write to Ollivander, the wandmaker, to ask about this wand?

Since his first contact with this wand, it had undergone repeated transformations, developing many functions that should not belong to a wand. Gary was unsure if this transformation was beneficial to him.

He only knew that he needed this wand to provide a balance for the magic within him.

Sighing, Gary once again abandoned the idea. He hadn't told anyone about the wand's secret. The Shafeek Couple, Howard, and Alfrina knew nothing about it, and he didn't plan to tell Ollivander either.

The dragonhide, bought for two hundred and ten Galleons, now rested obediently on the wand. Gary picked up the wand and made a couple of gestures, finding that only the width of the wand had increased slightly, about the same as when the wand's color hadn't changed, not affecting normal use.

Gary used his own magic to cast two household spells on items in the room, and the effects were normal.

He had a sudden thought and used the wand's own magic to cast "Aguamenti" on his desk. An unexpected event occurred. Through the dragonhide, Gary saw the wand faintly glow red, appearing dark red beneath the pitch-black dragonhide, surging like a tide from the wand's body to its tip. Just as the spell was about to erupt, Gary felt some regret. He wanted to withdraw the spell but couldn't, only watching as a finger-thick, solid cylindrical stream of water shot out from the wand's tip and struck the desktop, piercing through the thick surface with a ..., its momentum undiminished as it headed for the floor.

Gary panicked. If the floor was also pierced, Mrs. Shafik would surely beat him when she returned home.

He quickly raised his arm, and the water column, following the direction of his arm, cut the entire desk in half and then shattered the glass on top.

Gary stared dumbfounded at the desk, now split in two.

The magic stored in the wand was once again depleted.

"Reparo!" He channeled some of his own magic into the wand, then aimed the wand at the desk. After a dazzling white light, the desk returned to its original state.

He did the same, restoring the glass to its original form.

Gary discovered bittersweet news: the magic stored in the wand couldn't be easily used. Ordinary spells cast with the wand's stored magic would produce powerful destructive force. However, this also greatly enhanced his combat ability.

This wand was like a child with profound magic, not knowing how to control magic output and precision. The magic Gary channeled into it was refined to be extremely pure, and the power of spells cast with such pure magic was, of course, immense.

Gary sighed, unsure what to say.

...

This holiday passed quickly. Gary only realized the holiday was almost over when the owl delivered the new term's book list.

The owl this time delivered not only the book list but also a guardian consent form allowing students to visit Hogsmeade.

It's worth mentioning that as third-years, they had to start choosing courses. Gary checked Ancient Runes, Muggle Studies, and Alchemy.

That evening, Alfrina's letter arrived, asking about his elective choices and inviting him to meet in Diagon Alley on Sunday morning.

Gary then belatedly copied his class schedule and sent it back.

Then he wrote to Kona, Howard, and Lily, inviting them to Diagon Alley together on Sunday morning.

Kona and Howard agreed. Lily replied, politely declining, saying she would go with Snape.

On Sunday morning, Alfrina's face darkened when she saw Howard and Kona.

After not seeing each other for a summer, everyone's height had shot up. Howard grew three inches in one summer. Alfrina also began to develop like a budding willow branch, her height around one meter seventy, similar to Gary's, though her 'indescribable' parts were still flat.

Kona was the unhappiest; she seemed to have stopped growing, her height half a head shorter than her three companions.

The group exchanged information. Everyone's elective choices were similar. Alfrina, Howard, and Kona replaced Muggle Studies with Arithmancy.

The group went to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions to have several new robes custom-made. The person measuring them was still Ina Malkin, a Hufflepuff student in their year.

However, her attitude was completely different from when they first enrolled; she was extremely enthusiastic, probably because she now understood that Gary and Alfrina were not truly from powerful, influential families.

...

"Pandora Xenonia!"

"Ravenclaw!"

A lovely blonde little girl stumbled down from the stool, looking bewildered as she was pulled to the Ravenclaw table. The newly appointed Prefect, Xenophilius Lovegood, caught her and led her to the end of the long table, concluding this year's Sorting Ceremony.

Dumbledore stood up, spreading his arms parallel to his shoulders. A happy smile blossomed on his face, his wrinkles scrunching together like a chrysanthemum.

"Another new year, we have sent off one group of old students and welcomed a new group. Welcome to Hogwarts!" Sparse applause sounded from below the stage.

"...It is worth noting that our fifth and seventh-year students are already using new Defense Against the Dark Arts textbooks. All of this is thanks to an initiative organized within our school," Dumbledore paused, "The name of this organization is A Maverick Pig..."

Laughter erupted below the stage, likely finding the name too amusing.
