Chapter 46 - The Interview

The couple sat up straight with serious faces, backs rigid and hands on their knees, looking like model students attentively listening to their teacher.

But while they appeared "ready for the interview" on the outside, they were panicking internally. As Vice Principal Wilson leaned over to confer with the dean beside him, Leon stared straight ahead, tilting slightly toward Rossweise to whisper,

"Should we just kill them?"

"That's not a bad idea, Dragon Slayer, but let's not suggest it again."

"What do we do now? We didn't prepare for an interview at all!"

Rossweise closed her eyes, took a slow breath, and let it out. "We'll have to just handle it as it comes."

Ahem, ahem—

Vice Principal Wilson cleared his throat twice. "Alright, let's officially start the interview now."

Rossweise forced a polite smile. "Of course, Vice Principal."

"Oh, please don't be nervous. This is our first time trying interviews at our school, so it won't be too strict. Just relax, both of you."

The couple exchanged a look and remained silent.

Vice Principal Wilson picked up a stack of papers and asked in a relaxed tone,

"Do you both still remember your wedding anniversary?"

It was like a thunderbolt. The couple froze in their seats. The first question was a huge problem. But to pass, Rossweise answered quickly after a brief mental blank, "Ah, I remember, of course. How could I forget such an important day?"

Leon glanced at her.

Oh, lady, we had a child before we got married. Where would a wedding anniversary come from? Leon thought.

Rossweise shot a look back at him, secretly signaling with her eyes. Leon was flustered but understood the message.

Even though they didn't have a real wedding anniversary, one day from two years ago was more significant than any ceremony.

Rossweise: "It's in the year 1733 of the Genesis Calendar—"

They both said in unison: "May 25th."

In the year 1733 of the Genesis Calendar, on May 22nd, Leon's squad from the Imperial Dragon Slaying Army attacked the Silver Dragon Clan. Leon was betrayed, defeated, and captured. Three days later, on May 25th, he used a Blood Pact to bond with the Silver Dragon Queen, which led to her pregnancy.

Seeing the couple so in sync, Vice Principal Wilson looked surprised. "Only married for two years, and your child is starting school quite early."

"Yes, Vice Principal."

Rossweise smoothed her hair, using the motion to quietly sigh in relief.

"So, in these two years of marriage, has there been any habit or behavior of the other person that you found hard to live with?"

"No, "Rossweise answered immediately.

Wilson nodded, then looked at Leon.

Leon frowned, thought for a moment, and replied, "Yes."

Hearing this, Rossweise grew tense.

What is this idiot doing? He could have just said no and moved on!

"What is it?" the Vice Principal asked.

"Sometimes I feel like I'm not needed. My wife is so capable. She handles family matters and work perfectly. But she builds up stress easily. So I want to take this chance to tell her... I want to do more for this family too. You can rely on me."

"Don't use me to relieve your stress so much in the future," he muttered under his breath.

Leon's point was simple: if Rossweise was less stressed, she wouldn't need to use him as a stress reliever as much. If he helped more, she'd have less "homework."

But Vice Principal Wilson didn't catch the hidden meaning. He just nodded approvingly.

"How did you two get married in the beginning? Was it love, or did elders in your clan introduce you?" the Vice Principal asked.

"Oh, we… it was love at first sight, then we dated, and then—"

Rossweise looked at LLeon for help.

Leon quickly took over. "Then we eloped. Yeah, we eloped."

Eloped? More like a quick pregnancy!

The Vice Principal was surprised. "Eloped? Making such a quick decision. It must be a special fate that has kept you two together until now, right?"

The couple(smiling with narrowed eyes): "Vice Principal, you are very wise."

"Miss Rossweise, what do you find most attractive about your husband?"

The good points about this guy…

Rossweise glanced at Leon. She thought for a moment, then said,

"He's focused, serious, smart, not slick, responsible, likes children, and rarely gets angry with anyone."

After a short pause, she added, "For a more surface-level reason, he's handsome and has a good body, but…"

"But?"

"He's been sick lately. His body is weak."

Vice Principal: "Just that?"

"So, my husband is good at making medicines and uses them to stay healthy, right?"

Leon's mouth twitched slightly.

He thought Rossweise was finally going to praise him fully. But she had to add that last part.

"So, I also want to use this interview as a chance to say something to my husband."

Saying this, Rossweise reached out and gently put her hand on Leon's shoulder.

Then looking at him with soft eyes, she said quietly, "Don't push yourself too hard. I understand."

"You understand nothi——"

Vice Principal Wilson chuckled, covering his mouth with his hand. He found this couple amusing.

"Alright, alright. You two seem very lively in your daily life. Now, the next question: What are your plans for the future?"

The couple composed themselves.

"Plans for the future? Could you be more specific, Vice Principal?" Rossweise asked.

"A h, for example… Any plans for a second child?"

Leon silently covered his face and waved his hand, telling Rossweise to handle this one.

Rossweise smiled awkwardly.

"Well, we haven't really thought about that yet. Actually, we already have two children right now—Noah and her twin sister. So, for our plans… We'll focus on raising these two first before thinking about more. What do you think, Leon?"

Vice Principal: "A family of four already, very happy indeed."

"Thank you, Vice Principal."

Next, the Vice Principal asked a few more questions. Leon and Rossweise handled them skillfully, giving answers that were a mix of truth and fabrication.

As the interview was ending, Vice Principal Wilson said,

"So, to finish the interview, let's play a little game. It's like 'truth or dare.' Now, you can ask each other one question that you really want to know the answer to. If you choose to answer, please be honest. We won't force you if you don't want to."

The couple looked at each other.

To avoid complications, Rossweise answered directly, "I don't have any questions for my husband. I know everything about him."

"Alright. Mr. Leon, do you have any questions you'd like to ask your wife?"

Leon leaned back in his chair. He put his hand on his chin, his brow slightly furrowed.

Rossweise looked at him, wondering what he would ask. Would it be about her going easier on him? Or a hidden plea to return to the empire? It had to be one of those things.

After a short pause, Leon looked at Rossweise. He met her silver eyes and asked in a low voice,

"Do you actually like the teddy bear I gave you?"

Rossweise was stunned. She hadn't expected that question. It had nothing to do with their situation or their conflicts.

Her eyes trembled slightly. She pressed her lips together, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, looked down, and nodded.

"Yes. I really like the teddy bear you gave me."

Maybe even Rossweise didn't notice. Leon had asked, "Do you like it?"

But her answer wasn't just" like."

It was more—"I really like it."

Clap—

Leon clapped his hands once."Okay. I'm fine now."

Vic I really, Wilson stood up.

"So, the interview ends here. I wish you both a happy future. The assessment results will be sent to the Silver Dragon Temple by messenger dragon tomorrow. Thank you again for your cooperation."
