Kael cleared his throat once Eryn let him go. He mumbled, "Thanks," then he took a step sideways because the proximity was doing something weird and new within him. It wasn't unpleasant… but it was making his heart flutter that it messed with his mind.
The two followed the silent parade, their footsteps muffled by the soft earth. The campfire they had left behind dwindled into a faint orange speck between the trees, swallowed quickly by the dark.
Silence settled between the priest and the demon.
But from time to time, Kael was sneaking glances at the man beside him.
Eryn's face glowed softly from the bluish sheen of moonlight peeking through the gaps of luscious trees. His side profile was perfectly drawn, symmetrical, and proportionate. As he tilted his head ever so lightly—to look above—his jawline was highlighted, showing how sharp and defined it was, and the bump on his throat moved ever so gently as his lips pressed tightly.
