Chapter 511 - Chapter 511: The Serperior Problem

"And the final Pokémon for the Tokiko player," the commentator announced, rallying the crowd's attention, "is the full evolution of the Snivy line, one of Unova's three royal starters... Serperior!"

The Poké Ball opened and Serperior coiled into existence on the arena floor, her pale green body catching the light as two dark leaf-tipped tails fanned out behind her. Red eyes swept the arena with the unhurried arrogance of something that hadn't yet seen anything worth taking seriously.

In the stands, Nathan pushed his glasses up and went quiet.

"That Serperior," he said after a moment, "is above Tokiko's trainer level."

"How far above?" Sam asked.

"Champion tier preliminary, maybe higher. The Emboar was near-champion. The Unfezant was solid. But that..." He watched Serperior's eyes track slowly across the arena. "That one's a different conversation entirely."

Blake leaned forward. "You're saying Tokiko can't actually command her properly."

"I'm saying the probability is significant. Serperior is proud by nature. A level gap that large, from the same gender trainer, with that personality type..." Nathan paused. "We'll see."

...

Across the arena, Tokiko had her hands pressed together, bowing slightly toward her own Pokémon.

"I know you hate losing to me," she said, voice low enough that only Serperior could hear. "But I really can't lose this one. If we get through this I'll take you to the best Pokémon Coordinator in Unova. Promise."

Serperior's eyes drifted from Ash to Ninetales, assessing. Something shifted in her posture, the faintest acknowledgment.

"Satsuma."

Tokiko exhaled.

...

Ash watched the exchange with mild curiosity.

The Serperior is working independently. Tokiko's asking, not commanding. Interesting dynamic.

"Vine Whip," Tokiko said, extending her arm.

Serperior didn't move immediately. Then, with the deliberateness of someone performing a favor, she raised her tail and launched a dense cord of vine energy across the arena.

Ninetales sidestepped it cleanly.

"Satsuma~?" Serperior's brow lifted. The Vine Whip had been a test, not an attack. She'd wanted to know what she was dealing with.

Apparently she found the answer interesting, because she swayed her tail and launched a Leaf Storm without waiting for Tokiko's order, energy leaves spiraling into a vortex aimed directly at Ninetales.

"That's a self-initiated attack," the commentator said, surprised. "Serperior moved without an order. Whatever's driving this Pokémon, it's not following the trainer's lead."

"She's treating it like a personal challenge," Ash said quietly, reading Serperior's energy signature. "Ninetales is elegant. Serperior wants to prove she's more elegant."

He looked at Ninetales.

"Flamethrower. Wide coverage."

The twenty-five meter spread that followed swallowed half the arena in a single exhale, the Leaf Storm vaporizing the moment it entered the flame's radius. The fire rolled forward until it had scorched the entire far half of the field black.

Serperior bolted sideways, genuinely surprised by the range.

The crowd was already on its feet.

...

"She's fast," Nathan admitted.

"But the arena is smaller than the fire," Sam said.

"Monarch Snake, Solar Beam!" Tokiko called, then immediately corrected herself. "Serperior! Solar Beam!"

Serperior had already started charging, white energy condensing in her mouth with the focused intensity of someone who'd made a decision. The beam that fired a moment later was clean and precise, punching a hole directly through the remnant fire wall.

She moved through the gap herself half a second later, coiling forward at speed.

"Good response," Ash said.

"Iron Tail."

Ninetales's tail flared metallic white and swung before Serperior could complete her approach, the impact sending her skidding sideways across the scorched arena floor.

"Satsuma!" Serperior recoiled, less from pain than from the indignity of it, and launched a Leaf Tornado immediately from the floor, pride fully engaged now.

"Flamethrower vortex."

Ninetales exhaled in a tight spiral rather than a spread, the flame wrapping itself around the Leaf Tornado and collapsing inward, converting the Grass-type technique into fuel before it covered half the remaining distance.

The resulting fireball caught Serperior directly.

"SATSUMA!!!"

The arena went very loud.

When the fire cleared, Serperior lay on the scorched stone, eyes spiraling, the elegant posture from moments ago completely gone.

"Serperior is unable to battle! Ninetales wins! The victor is Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town, advancing to the semi-finals with a single Pokémon!"

The stands erupted.
