Chapter 1 - Prologue

The reek of iron hung heavy in the air, thick and cloying like a shroud.

A girl, lay sprawled on the cracked earth, her breath rattling in her chest, each inhale a struggle. Blood stained the parched ground around her, a grim halo against the dust. Her once vibrant green eyes, now dulled with pain and the encroaching darkness, flickered open. Bruises, dark and angry, painted her skin, a testament to the brutal dance she'd been forced to perform with death.

Above her, shimmering with an ethereal light that seemed to steal the very air from her lungs, stood Fate. Not the blindfolded figure of myth, but a woman of breathtaking, terrifying beauty. Her eyes, like twin nebulae, swirled with galaxies untold, cold and indifferent. A cruel smile played on her lips.

Esmeray coughed, a wet, ragged sound. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. "You… you won't win," she rasped, her voice barely a whisper. "I… I swear it… I'll kill you, Fate. I'll kill you, even if I have to… to die a thousand times."

A low, melodic laugh echoed from Fate, a sound that grated on Esmeray's raw nerves.

"Such spirit," Fate purred, her voice laced with mockery. "So… predictable. You humans, with your fleeting lives and your futile defiance. You think you can defy the inevitable? You think your petty vengeance can touch me?"

She tilted her head, her gaze sweeping over Esmeray's broken form. "You are but a flicker, a spark in the vast tapestry of time. Extinguishing you is… trivial."

Esmeray's hand clenched into a fist, the nails digging into her bloodied palm. "I… I'll come back," she choked out, her voice trembling but resolute. "Every time you snuff me out… I'll return. And one day… one day I'll have my vengeance."

Fate's laughter deepened, a chilling sound that seemed to vibrate through the very ground beneath Esmeray. "Brave words," she said, her eyes gleaming with cold amusement. "But you misunderstand, little mortal. Death is not the end. It is merely a… transition. And I control the transition."

She raised a hand, and a swirling vortex of dark energy began to form above Esmeray, the air crackling with power.

"Your defiance is… tiresome. Let us conclude this… performance."

Esmeray stared up at the swirling darkness, a flicker of fear finally crossing her face. But beneath the fear, a spark of defiance remained, burning bright even in the face of oblivion.

"I… I'll see you… in hell," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Fate's smile widened, revealing the sharp, predatory edge beneath the surface of her beauty. "Indeed you will," she whispered back.

The vortex pulsed, then slammed down, engulfing Esmeray in its suffocating embrace.

Her scream was cut short, swallowed by the swirling darkness. The light around Esmeray flickered and died, leaving only the dust and the lingering scent of blood.

Fate watched the spot where Esmeray had been, her expression unchanged. "Such futile struggles," she murmured, her voice barely a breath.

Then, with a flick of her wrist, the vortex dissipated, leaving no trace of the girl who had dared to challenge her.

Fate turned away, her shimmering form fading into the air, leaving only the silence and the crimson stain on the cracked earth as a testament to the fleeting defiance of a mortal life.
