Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Rookie Training Camp

Shangjing City.

Night Watchmen Headquarters.

Yuan Gang frowned at the document. "Why's the rookie camp in Cangnan? Who's even there?"

A man lounging in a recliner stretched, a cross-shaped scar on his forehead. Shao Pingge, captain of Shangjing's Team 006.

"You're asking me? Who do I ask? Training's training, wherever it is. Can't lead without Shangjing?" Shao Pingge raised an eyebrow, drawling.

"Captain, if I go, what about Shangjing?" Yuan Gang asked, concerned.

"Joking? Like Team 006 can't function without its vice-captain?"

"I'm worried you'll wreck Shangjing with some stunt."

Whoosh!

A size-43 slipper flew at Yuan Gang's face.

Yuan Gang dodged, tossed the slipper out the window, grinned at Shao Pingge, and left.

Shao Pingge: "Yuan Gang, &%$!@#!"

Inside the Black Van.

Chen Muye's face was grim in the passenger seat.

The group sat in silence.

Wen Qimo broke it. "The tickets are non-refunded, but the camp's in Cangnan. We can visit anytime."

Wu Xiangnan, driving, said flatly, "It's closed training. No visitors."

"Uh… at least we packed well—down jackets, heating pads, thick blankets…"

"Qimo, Cangnan's winters don't need those…" Hongying whispered.

"Shut it!"

Chen Muye's heart bled…

"Hongying, see if we can return that stuff later."

"Tianchen's might be non-returnable… he tore off all the tags when he got them…" Hongying said awkwardly.

Gu Tianchen scratched his head sheepishly.

"You little… you work fast," Chen Muye growled. "What about Qiye's?"

Lin Qiye waved helplessly. "Mine too. He said… no big deal."

Chen Muye: ╰_╯╬??

A gleaming training camp rose from the ground, built in mere days.

Yuan Gang marveled at the sight, awed by Great Xia's construction prowess. Infrastructure maniacs, reputation earned!

"Rookie list out?"

"Here, sir."

Yuan Gang took the list, freezing.

"What kind of godly lineup is this?"

Other instructors crowded around.

"Guangshen's Baili Group heir? Damn, I heard the Baili family funds half our Night Watchmen. Here to gild the young master?"

"Why's a rich kid slumming it here? Brain damage?"

"Rich folks' world, who gets it? If we go too hard, they won't retaliate, right?"

"Let them try," Yuan Gang's eyes chilled. "The Night Watchmen's a state organization, not the Baili family's museum. Train them to the bone. I'll take the heat."

"Yes, sir!"

Yuan Gang's gaze returned to the list, eyebrow twitching.

"Divine Agents?! Two at once?!"

"Two Divine Agents? Who are they?"

"One's Seraph Michael's agent, the other's Fire God Zhurong's, a true Great Xia deity," Yuan Gang said slowly.

"Great Xia gods?! Our gods are finally showing up?!"

"Zhurong? The one who fought Gonggong, punched a hole in the sky?"

"Per the myths, Zhurong's got a fiery temper. His agent's probably a hothead too."

"One Baili heir, two Divine Agents, three high-risk cases. This camp's gonna be a mess."

Yuan Gang's lips curled. "No panic. Call the Masked Team to hold the fort. Only monsters can handle monsters."

"Achoo!"

Gu Tianchen sneezed in the van. Wen Qimo, driving, asked, "Cold?"

Lin Qiye raised an eyebrow. "With this guy's physique? A cold?"

Gu Tianchen said solemnly, "I feel like someone's badmouthing me behind my back. Blind guess—it's the captain. He's probably pissed I tore off the tags and couldn't return the stuff, feeling the pinch on his salary."

"Enough with the blind guesses. You two have arrived," Wen Qimo said, pulling over.

Gu Tianchen glanced around. The area was desolate, hardly resembling a training camp site.

"Hell, where did you bring us?"

"Are you sure this is the right place?" Lin Qiye asked Wen Qimo.

"No way I got it wrong. The captain gave me this address," Wen Qimo replied.

"Forget it. Let's walk ahead. Maybe it's just up there."

"Alright, stay safe. I'm heading back. Do your best and don't embarrass Team 136," Wen Qimo said with a smile.

"No worries, we've got this… I mean, we'll win this," Gu Tianchen grinned.

Outside the training camp, at a military checkpoint, a sniper spotted Gu Tianchen and Lin Qiye approaching.

"Report, two individuals approaching."

"Details."

"Two young males, likely high schoolers. One's carrying a pink Hello Kitty suitcase, the other's dragging a Peppa Pig suitcase. No weapons."

"High schoolers? Could they be recruits reporting in? But the notice went out this morning, and they're here by noon? That's too fast."

"I'll check it out," Instructor Hong said, setting down his radio and driving out.

"Is the captain messing with us because we didn't return the stuff? This place doesn't look like a training camp," Gu Tianchen grumbled.

"It's you, not us. I'm just an innocent bystander dragged into your mess," Lin Qiye said, rolling his eyes.

"Psh, we're tight, bro. What's yours is mine, and what's mine is still mine," Gu Tianchen said shamelessly.

Lin Qiye: ???

"This godforsaken place doesn't even have a ghost. If only a car could pick us up—an off-roader, something badass that matches my macho vibe," Gu Tianchen said.

Lin Qiye was about to call him out for dreaming when the roar of an engine cut through. A military-green armored off-roader rolled up toward them.

Lin Qiye stared at Gu Tianchen, stunned.

Bro, are you speaking things into existence?

Who's the real miracle agent here?

The off-roader stopped. Instructor Hong lowered the window, about to speak, when one of the teens—a cocky-looking high schooler—hopped in and stowed his pink suitcase.

"Qiye, get in."

Gu Tianchen, standing in the back, grinned and extended a hand to Lin Qiye.

"Hold up, kid, you don't waste time. Who are you guys?" Hong Hao asked.

"Can't you tell? We're here for the recruit training," Gu Tianchen said with a smile.

"What's your name?"

"Gu Tianchen."

"Gu Tianchen?!" Hong Hao's eyes widened. "You're the Fire God's agent?!"

Gu Tianchen smiled without answering. Fire God Zhurong is just one of them. Pangu's agent suits me better.

Hong Hao swallowed hard, calming his excitement.

This kid's a divine agent on day one? No one else could surprise him now.

"And you?"

Hong Hao turned to the other handsome teen.

"Lin Qiye."

"Lin Qiye?!" Hong Hao's freshly calmed nerves spiked again. "You're the Seraph's agent?!"

Hong Hao was floored. He'd picked up two divine agents as recruits!

What kind of luck was this?!

"Ahem… know any lottery shops nearby? I'm feeling unstoppable right now!" Hong Hao said confidently.

Gu Tianchen: (?ω?) hiahiahia

Lin Qiye: (ー_ー)!!
