"Why do you care?"
His question hung thickly in the air, it had turned my own damn question against me. And I had no answer; it was so simple and direct, but it stripped me of every defense and pretense. It exposed my raw jealousy, it exposed the fact that I was bothered by whom he spent time with, that I was bothered by a maid.
I didn't answer him, how could I possibly answer such a question? Instead, I moved towards him till I closed the distance between us and was right in front of him. He stood his ground as my eyes burned into his, I don't know if I was trying to intimidate him or if I was just trying to find remnants of the warmth I'd seen in those eyes earlier, I found nothing.
"I don't have to answer that, Elias," I said, my voice a low, breathless whisper. "I don't have to answer to you or anyone else."
He didn't move, he didn't speak, he just watched me with a steady and unyielding gaze.
