Chapter 4 - 4. Discovering Ambergris

Li Wei then remembered the regulations here in Eagle Country: all fishing activities must apply for a fishing license from ADFG, and there are extremely strict regulations on the type, quantity, time, and size of the catch.

For example, for geoduck, clams, and razor clams, each person can only take two geoduck per day, and fifteen clams and razor clams per person per day. Anything smaller than the regulated size must be released. Once caught violating the rules by a fishery officer, one will face extremely strict penalties.

Furthermore, the catch obtained from fishing is strictly prohibited from being bought or sold; it can only be eaten by oneself or given to friends.

In his previous life, he saw a news report online about someone who sold the fish they caught online. Because they did not have a fishing business license and fishing permit, they were fined over 100,000 us dollars by ADFG and potentially faced five to ten years in prison.

As a native of Alaska, the original owner naturally had a fishing license, and it was a long-term one, so he was not worried about being penalized by fishery officers at all.

The three walked and chatted, stopping occasionally to dig up a large clam or razor clam.

It didn't take long for Li Wei to use up most of his daily quota.

When he dug up an extra-large geoduck, he decided to stop. Firstly, he had used up most of his daily quota. Secondly, his mesh bag was already full, and if he continued digging, he would have to carry them by hand.

Besides, the beach was not far from the original owner's home. If he wanted to eat them in the future, he could come over anytime. There was no need to catch too much at once.

Seeing this situation, the three also decided not to continue beachcombing and prepared to pack up and leave.

Just as Li Wei was helping Jessica wash their haul from this trip, a purple light spot lit up on the virtual screen in his field of vision.

Since activating the detection system, it was the first time Li Wei had seen a purple light spot. He couldn't help but wonder what purple represented.

After exploring the system, he already knew what some of the colored light spots represented.

For example: gold is golden, silver is silver, iron is gray, stones are gray, animals are blue, and plants are green.

There are also significant differences between the same substances; some colors are dark, and some are light. I won't go into detail about each one here.

Li Wei said goodbye to the siblings and walked towards the location of the purple light spot.

Before long, he saw the true appearance of the purple light spot.

From the outside, it looked like a piece of "rotten wood" floating on the sea. Perhaps because it had been soaked in the sea for too long, its surface was a grayish-white color. If one didn't observe carefully, it would be easy to overlook its existence.

Although he didn't know exactly what this thing was, for the "system" to mark it as purple, this thing in front of him was definitely not as ordinary as it looked.

The "rotten wood" felt very light in his hand, quite different from its volume. He weighed it in his hand; it was probably a little over one kilogram.

He first examined it carefully, then gently smelled it under his nose.

At the same time, he continuously recalled various memories in his mind, trying to see if he could identify what this thing was.

On the other side, the siblings, who had finished washing their haul, were about to call Li Wei to go home together when they saw him holding something and looking at it, with a serious expression of thought on his face.

Both were a little curious about what he was looking at, so they quickly walked towards Li Wei.

Approaching him, Jessica asked curiously:

"Li Wei, what is that you're holding?"

"Jessica, I just picked this up. I thought it was a piece of rotten wood, but it doesn't feel quite like it when I hold it. You two take a look too."

Li Wei already had some guesses about the item in his hand, but he couldn't be sure it was that thing yet.

If it really was that thing, he would soon have a large sum of money coming in.

As for whether the siblings would want a share after knowing the true identity of this thing, Li Wei didn't care too much.

Leaving aside whether the siblings could recognize it, even if they did and had bad thoughts, Li Wei wasn't too concerned. He was destined not to lack money in this life. If it was that thing, its value would at most be tens of thousands or over a hundred thousand us dollars, which was very cost-effective for recognizing a person.

Jessica took the "rotten wood," first examined it carefully, and seeing nothing special, she imitated Li Wei's earlier action, smelled it under her nose, and couldn't help but frown.

After confirming it was something she didn't recognize, Jessica directly handed it to Buck beside her.

Buck took the "rotten wood," first looked at it for a while, then weighed it in his hand. As if suddenly thinking of something, he scraped off some crumbs from the surface, quickly rubbed them with his fingers, smelled them under his nose, and immediately showed a look of surprise on his face, saying excitedly:

"Li Wei, this thing seems to be ambergris!"

Buck's words shocked both Li Wei and Jessica.

Jessica was shocked because she had heard of ambergris and knew it was very valuable.

Her neighbor had found a piece over ten years ago. She heard the neighbor uncle say that he sold it for a lot of money, and he still often bragged about it to people.

Li Wei was genuinely surprised that Buck could recognize ambergris. However, thinking about Buck's profession and experiences over the past few years, he felt it was reasonable.

Unlike the original owner, Buck dropped out of high school and entered society. He had done many jobs over the years: fisherman, gold panner, car mechanic assistant, logger, and he even hung out with gangs for a while.

He only settled down in the last two years and now works on the original owner's Sea Monster.

With his strength and mechanical repair skills, he is now the deck officer of the Sea Monster, managing three crew members under him, a proper promising young man in the town.

"Buck, you mean this thing is ambergris!"

Jessica exclaimed excitedly.

Realizing her voice was a bit loud, she quickly covered her mouth, looked around cautiously, and only after confirming that no one was paying attention did she release her hand and pat her chest, causing a surge of waves.

Buck returned the ambergris in his hand to Li Wei and said:

"I'm just guessing, but according to Old Vic, there's a high probability this thing is ambergris. I suggest you'd better find an expert to identify it."

"Right, right! Our neighbor Uncle Carl next door found a piece before, and it's said he sold it for a lot of money. The piece you found, Li Wei, is so big, it will definitely sell for more."

Seeing that the siblings had no other ideas, a smile appeared on Li Wei's face, and he said with a laugh:

"OK, I'll go to Anchorage tomorrow to find an expert for identification. However, we should celebrate properly tonight."

"That's great! I want pizza and barbecue!"

"No problem. I'm treating tonight, all you can eat."

"..."

The three chatted and laughed as they arrived at the pickup truck, deciding to go to Li Wei's house to celebrate tonight and coincidentally eat the day's catch.

However, they still had to go to the supermarket to buy some ingredients and drinks first.

The three didn't stay on the beach any longer. The two pickup trucks quickly drove onto the road and sped towards the town.

The place where Li Wei and the others were located is called Point, a small town under the city of Homer, with a population of about three thousand people. Most residents make a living by fishing and logging.

Half an hour later, the two pickup trucks slowly stopped in the parking lot in front of the supermarket.

Claire's Supermarket.

As the only supermarket in Point, Claire's Supermarket is not large, about 500 square meters.

But small as it is, it has everything. Most goods on the market can be bought here, and even if not, similar alternatives can be found.

Li Wei and the three walked directly to the alcohol section and began choosing their favorite beers, and then started buying ingredients.

After some shopping, the shopping cart was more than half full.

When Li Wei walked to the condiment shelf, he actually saw many seasonings from his "hometown."

For example: Laoganma, soybean paste, balsamic vinegar, and soy sauce.

Li Wei directly bought two bottles of each, in case he might use them when cooking in the future.

The siblings were already used to this, especially in the past two years with more and more tourists visiting Point, the town also saw more Chinese residents settling down, and two new Chinese restaurants opened.

The siblings often went to taste Oriental cuisine. Their favorite dish was called "Orange Chicken."

After purchasing the ingredients and beer needed for the celebration, the three pushed their shopping carts towards the parking lot.

On the way to Li Wei's house, the three also bought a lot of pizza and barbecue at a fast-food restaurant.
