Chapter 3 - The Crayon That Dreamed of Light by David by David

Tick... tick... the silence hums,

Click... click... the cold night drums.

I lie beneath the star-stained sky,

And wonder, wonder... why, oh why?

Why the socks still hang, still wait,

Why the stars don't speak of fate.

Why the bells don't ring for me,

Why the dreams drift out to sea.

Tap... tap... the moonlight speaks,

Crack... crack... my crayon squeaks.

A broken line, a smeared face,

My mother is gone, no soft embrace.

Snap... snap... my heart inside,

Hide... hide... the tears I hide.

I draw a world where we still touch,

A world that's kind, a world that's much...

Much too far, much too faint,

Paint... paint... and still I paint.

With yellow hope and shades of blue,

The missing piece, the hidden clue.

Rust... rust... the attic sighs,

Dust... dust... and lullabies.

A girl who smiles through time and frame,

A puzzle piece, a whispered name.

Step by step, I search, I seek,

Speak... speak..., but none will speak.

My voice is soft, my dreams are loud,

A lonely boy beneath a cloud.

Bright... bright... the crayon gleams,

Light... light... in shattered dreams.

The world is sharp, but I draw round,

In silence deep, where hope is found.

Dear Santa, dear stars, dear skies so wide,

Slide... slide... these tears I hide.

But still I wait, and still I write,

My soul in sketches, night by night.
