Chapter 109 - Chapter 107

The Foundation's conference room was all glass and soft light, with a skyline view that seemed almost wasted on the dozen people currently seated around the table. Will stood at the head, one hand braced on the polished surface, the other gesturing toward the sleek digital presentation glowing on the wall.

His voice was measured, confident—business Will in full command. Yet, in the back of his mind, the morning's breakfast conversation kept replaying. When can I have one? Lyra's clear little voice, her earnest eyes, the way Eliza had nearly upended the coffee pot in surprise. He'd smirked all the way to work, and even now, between talking figures and timelines, he could feel that same smile tugging at him.

The meeting ended with polite applause and the murmur of satisfied clients. Will saw them out, took care of a few quick follow-ups, then glanced at his watch. He'd promised himself—and Lyra—that he'd be the one to pick her up today.

By the time he reached the school gates, Lyra was already bounding toward him, her backpack slightly askew, hair flying. "Daddy! Guess what?"

"What?" he asked, crouching to meet her at eye level.

"Sophie's baby brother tried to put his foot in his mouth today, and she says babies do that all the time! Isn't that silly?"

Will chuckled, taking her hand. "Very silly. But I think we should leave the foot-eating to babies, okay?"

She giggled, skipping along beside him as they made their way to the car.

When they got home, the kitten was waiting at the door as though it had been counting the minutes since Lyra left. The rest of the afternoon was spent in that comfortable, happy rhythm—snacks at the kitchen counter, Lyra sprawled on the rug with her coloring books, the kitten batting at her crayons.

By the time Eliza came home, the house was softly lit, dinner was half-ready, and Will was leaning in the doorway with his tie loosened. "Hey," he greeted her, that look in his eyes telling her without words that he'd been counting down to this moment.

Over dinner, Lyra launched into her latest school stories, and Will noticed the faint blush that crept onto Eliza's cheeks when "Sophie's baby brother" came up again. He didn't call her out on it—not yet. But later, after Lyra was asleep and the house had gone quiet, he planned on revisiting the topic in a way that would make her blush for very different reasons.
