Chapter 3 - Matthew

I carefully crept towards the cracked open door, and when I opened it and entered the room, I could feel danger looming behind me. I grab my gun, turn around, and aim ready to shoot, but a scream lets out of that thing's mouth. "Wait, wait, I carefully crept towards the cracked open door, and when I opened it and entered the room, I could feel danger looming behind me. I grab my gun, turn around, and aim ready to shoot, but a scream lets out of that thing's mouth. "Wait, wait, wait!! Don't shoot!" It was a man, probably around my age or so. He looked petrified, dropping the lamp he was holding. "Who are you?" I questioned, "And what are you doing here?" He stared at my gun pointed at him, his pupils shrunk in terror, then looked at me, gesturing for me to put it down. I did so slowly, only so he was able to speak without being frightened to death. "I-I'm Ethan, Asher's best friend, a-and I came here to find out what happened to him. Caleb only said that he had gone missing overnight, but I had to see it for myself, so I snuck in to try and find something, anything that might lead me to find him."

I'm guessing Caleb is the Chief's buddy that he mentioned and the older brother of Asher, the one who was maybe/probably kidnapped. "I see, well I didn't mean to startle you. I'm Detective Matthew, and I'm the one overseeing this case. Don't worry, your friend Asher will be back home soon, so you can just go home and I'll take care of it from here." I explained, trying to sound as calm as possible, but the kid almost scared the bejeezus outta me. He's lucky I didn't shoot him.

Ethan's lime hair was frizzy and unkempt as if he was massaging a hand through it out of fright, like a habit. His bright blue eyes looked over me, seeming with curiosity.

"Can I help?" Ethan asked.

"Absolutely not. This is my job, and you're just a civilian who has no business delving into this. I know this may seem unfair, but it's for your own good." I told him.

He gave me a shocked look. "What do you mean I have nothing to do with this? I have a lot to do with it, he's my best friend!" he yelled. "I know everything about him! I can help!"

I thought about this, "Maybe he could help? But even if he did, it would make no difference if he was kidnapped."

"This isn't fair! Asher just got news of Loid's death, and now he's gone missing and I can't even help?!" he wailed.

"Alright, alright, calm down. First, tell me, who is Loid?"

"He was Asher's co-worker at the gas station and his first love." he explained crying.

So, these two cases are connected somehow. They both have to do with Asher, who knew the latest victim, and now he himself has been kidnapped, or seems to be. "Could you hand me a map?" I said to the crying boy.

He looked up at me and stopped crying, "Sure there's one in Caleb's room. I saw it when I snuck into his room to steal his razor, but don't tell him that." he replied nervously. I gave a small chuckle. He dashed into the room and back out with a map of the town.

"Where does Loid live?" I inquired.

"About 15 minutes from here."

It's closer than I thought. Much closer. "Alright, thank you for your help, but you should really go home now and get some rest." Ethan looked like he was about to protest, but quickly changed his mind, nodding his head and left. His house probably isn't far from here, considering I didn't see a car out front.

I walked back into the kitchen, but unlike what I saw when I first got here, there was nothing on the floors. No glass, no blood, and no phone. Someone had silently cleaned it up while I was interrogating Ethan. But who? I would have noticed if someone else besides us were here, unless it was something so harmless that its presence was concealed. Even though they had cleaned the blood, there was still a slight stain on the wood floors. Walking towards that porch door, I noticed its features. The golden door knob now rusted, the wood dwindling, and the glass broken. Now thinking about it, the house seems to be very old, untaken care of, and yet at the same time somewhat habitable.

When I opened the porch door, it led out onto a large patio. There was a path at the end of the stairs. Curious, I followed it into the dark pine woods. As I continued, it only got darker and darker, but then there was a light up ahead. A cabin.!! Don't shoot!" It was a man, probably around my age or so.
