If it takes one to two years, they can still hold on, even for ten or eight years, they could manage, after all, time is negligible in cultivation, a single retreat could last decades, let alone ten or eight years.
If the method requires decades or even hundreds of years, then none of the people present could afford such time. Decades are simply too long, too long for anyone to endure.
