Chapter 3 - The beginning of the curse

Flashback

"Wake up, sweetheart."

"Good morning, Mom."

His mother smiled and hugged the child.

"Dad prepared a big surprise for you."

The child was overjoyed.

...

The father came back from work.

"Where's my little buddy?"

The boy ran toward his dad and hugged him tightly.

"I missed you, buddy. Look what I brought!"

The boy's eyes widened.

"It's the phone I wanted! Thank you, Dad!"

The father hugged the mother and kissed her. "Let's go eat."

"Dad, Mom, I promise I'll get even better grades this time!"

They all smiled.

That night, they all went to sleep.

The mother woke up to drink some water but noticed strange movement—like someone was inside the house.

The boy also heard a noise and left his room.

He walked down the stairs and saw a man covering his mother's mouth.

It was very dark, so they didn't notice the child.

The boy remembered the gun his father kept in his office. He quickly went to get it.

While he grabbed it, he knocked on the door of his father's room to wake him.

The boy slowly came back down, then rushed forward until he was standing in front of the man and his mom.

The man was shocked and frightened.

"Drop the gun or I'll kill her," he said.

That last word triggered something in the child. He loved his mom so much.

He closed his eyes tightly, ignoring her screams and the man's threats—

He pulled the trigger.

The man was lucky—he wasn't hit. He ran out of the big, fancy house.

But the boy looked at his mother, who was bleeding badly. She had taken the bullet.

He cried harder.

His father ran downstairs to see what had happened, only to find his son holding a gun and his beloved wife drowning in her blood.

He looked at the boy with anger.

Present Day

Tears streamed down Reza's face—like waterfalls, expressing pain, loneliness, and injustice.

He washed his face and tried to pull himself together. It wasn't the first time he remembered, but this time… it hurt more.

He heard a knock on the door.

Reza opened it.

"Hello, Mr. Ramy."

Ramy smiled. "Hi. Who are you?"

"I'm Captain Ramadan from the police station. I need to talk to you."

Time froze in Reza's mind.

He thought to himself: Damn it. What happened? I didn't leave any evidence behind. I'm sure of it.

He smiled. "Please, come in."

They sat across from each other.

Am I a suspect? Or is this just questions? I have two options—convince him I'm innocent or kill him, Reza thought.

Ramadan smiled. "Do you know why I'm here?"

Reza thought: This is just a psychological game. I'll give him what he wants.

Ramy: "Of course. It's about Reham's death." He faked a look of sadness.

Ramadan: "So, what did you think of her?"

Ramy narrowed his eyes and put his hand on his face briefly, speaking with sadness.

"She was very kind and helped everyone, even me. But she was clearly bullied a lot."

Ramadan: "Do you think she killed herself or was murdered?"

Ramy thought: Her mom said she would never consider suicide. I should go with that too—it's more convincing.

Ramy: "A person like Reham—strong, hurt by life's problems—but I don't believe suicide was in her vocabulary. Still, who really knows what happened?"

Ramadan: "Her mother said you were supposed to be her fiancé."

Ramy: "She never met me. But I guess Reham mentioned my name. We had agreed to fake a relationship to give her freedom—make it seem like men were proposing, and she was rejecting them."

Ramadan: "Why didn't it continue?"

Ramy, with genuine sadness: "Because I felt she fell in love with me. Like I was her dream man. I wanted her to wake up to reality quickly. I'm not emotionally attracted to her. I thought it wouldn't affect her deeply."

Ramadan paused. "Thank you. But... can you give me advice for my job? You seem... wise."

Ramy thought for a second, suspecting a trick, then said:

"Security cameras. That's all I can think of."

Ramadan smiled and placed a hand on Ramy's shoulder.

"There were no security cameras."

.....

At Ramadan's office

"What do you think of what he said?"

Ramadan: "I used to believe the last person in someone's life would lead me to the truth. But now... I'm starting to believe it really was suicide."

"I agree."

Ramadan: "But what's strange is... this Ramy. He seems too perfect. That bothers me."

"You suspect him just because of that?"

Ramadan: "I'd be lying if I said no."

At the university

A girl sat on a bench in the campus courtyard. She looked sad, but even through the sadness, her beauty was clear.

Blonde hair, white skin, beautiful features, green eyes.

"Ugh, how could I forget the assignment? It's due today. I'm so stupid."

"What's wrong? Is there a problem?"

She looked up and saw a handsome young man smiling at her.

She replied coldly: "Please go away. I'm in a bad mood. My project is lost."

Ramy held up some papers. "Is this your project?"

She checked it and lit up like a child. "Thank you! Where did you find it?"

Ramy: "It was on the ground."

He smiled and extended his hand: "I'm Ramy. And you?"

She smiled: "I'm Menna."

Inside Ramy's head:

Reham's book is closed. She taught me college subjects. After I finished, I threw her away.

Now I want Menna's book—to teach me what love means. And when I'm done, I'll throw her away too.

His face, in that moment, was dark and angry.

He asked himself with sadness:

Why am I like this?
