Chapter 18 - Scorch Marks and Bad Ideas

The black footprint on my floor refused to go away.

I tried scrubbing it.

I tried debugging it.

I even tried pouring coffee on it (don't ask).

Nothing worked. The mark stayed there like a polite reminder that something had stood in my apartment and almost erased me from existence.

Tony floated above it, scanning for the twentieth time.

"Still nothing. No residual code. No energy signature. It's like the Cleaner never left a trace… except this one."

"Very helpful," I muttered.

I sat on the couch with the white card in both hands. It had been quiet ever since the Cleaner left. Too quiet.

"Card. Talk. What the hell is a Cleaner?"

A long pause.

Then:

A failsafe. When the System decides a User is too dangerous to patch or delete normally, it sends a Cleaner. Cleaners don't kill you. They rewrite the timeline so you were never born.

Tony's screen flickered. "That's horrifying."

It gets worse. Once a Cleaner has your scent, it can find you anywhere. Locks, walls, and clever door commands only buy time.

I rubbed my face.

"So we're on a timer."

Yes.

"How long?"

Depends how fast your Echo value keeps rising.

I checked the number in the corner of my vision.

2.5%

It had gone up again while I wasn't looking.

Tony drifted closer. "We need to move. Staying here is suicide."

"And go where? The System can find me anywhere, remember?"

The card pulsed once.

Not anywhere.

I looked down at it.

"Explain."

There are places the System doesn't fully control. Old zones. Broken servers. Forgotten corners of the simulation that were never properly patched. If you can reach one before the Cleaner returns… you might buy real time.

Tony projected a tiny map of the city. Most of it glowed soft blue. A few spots glowed red.

"Those red areas?" he asked.

Dead zones. Places where the System's authority is thin.

I stared at the map.

One of the red spots was only six blocks away. An abandoned parking garage that had been scheduled for demolition three years ago and somehow never got demolished.

I stood up.

"Tony. Pack whatever counts as packing for a floating vending machine."

"I don't have pockets."

"Then just look determined."

I shoved the white card into my jacket, grabbed my keys, and opened the debug panel one more time.

> [New Temporary Objective]

> Reach the nearest Dead Zone before the Cleaner returns

> Time Remaining: Unknown

> Failure Condition: Never having existed

I took a deep breath.

"Alright," I said. "New plan. We run."

Tony's screen displayed a tiny pixelated suitcase.

"I hate this plan already."

"Good," I answered, opening the door. "That means it's consistent."

We stepped into the hallway.

Behind us, the black footprint on the floor slowly faded… then reappeared one shade darker, like it was waiting for us to come back.
