"Ow~!"
Just as Coulson was preparing to follow May back, a deafening roar suddenly came from the distance. Judging from the sheer volume, Coulson and the others could tell that whatever made it must be enormous. The key point was—the roar came from a direction different from where Kong had been earlier. That meant there was now another massive monster on the island, besides Kong.
Moments later, another roar echoed from the opposite direction—the one they remembered as being Kong's current location.
As the echoes faded, Coulson quickly said, "Looks like we need to pick up the pace, or this place might turn into their battlefield any minute now."
He glanced at Diana, who understood what he meant. "Let's go. If we run into them, I can probably stall them for a bit, but I'm not Clark. Against monsters that size, there's not much I can do."
Although they could hear the roars, the distance and dense trees prevented them from seeing what the newcomer looked like after landing.
If they could have seen it, they would have recognized the new arrival immediately—Clark's Godzilla.
But one thing they had guessed right: upon discovering Godzilla, Kong roared to drive the strange monster away, defending his territory. Godzilla, however, ignored the warning. After answering with a provocative roar of his own, he set foot on Skull Island.
Clark, having finished clearing the underground Skullcrawlers, returned to the surface to find Coulson's group with May, preparing to evacuate—and, in the distance, Godzilla and Kong already facing off.
"Clark, you're here. Anything happen down there?" At this point, Coulson's group, guided by Diana, was nearly back to where May had parked the Airbus. Seeing Clark brought them a wave of relief.
They also recognized the other strange creature—Clark's Godzilla—but they knew they weren't Clark, and couldn't expect Godzilla to show them any special treatment just for being human.
Even Diana likely couldn't manage that, given how little contact she'd had with Godzilla. So if the two titans started fighting, their only option was to stay as far away as possible.
"The underground is like an ant nest, stretching in all directions. If you're not familiar with it, it's easy to get lost. It's also the Skullcrawlers' lair," Clark explained.
"But while I was down there, I wiped out all the Skullcrawlers in the tunnels. If any are left, it's only the few that had already surfaced before."
Clark shared a brief account of what he'd found underground, but said nothing about the Trident of Poseidon. As far as he was concerned, possessing the Trident essentially made him the master of Skull Island.
Even if Coulson's group wouldn't attempt to take it, it was better they didn't know it existed. Sometimes ignorance really was a blessing.
"Alright, but we're heading out. You and Diana coming with us?"
"What's the matter—mission complete? If it's just about those two," Clark gestured toward Godzilla and Kong, "I can stop them from fighting."
He was confident in that. Both were his defeated opponents; even together, they likely couldn't beat him.
"It's not because of them. I'm not sure why, but it looks like it's shutting down," Coulson said, pointing toward the distant sky.
Following his gesture, Clark saw the storm wall fading in the distance. Once it vanished completely, the area would revert to how it had been when he first arrived.
"Then go ahead. I need to deal with Kong and Godzilla," Clark replied, still watching the two titans.
"Alright, we're off." Seeing the storm weaken further, Coulson didn't waste more time. Knowing Clark could leave on his own, he waved goodbye and led his team onto the Bus, departing the mysterious island.
"Did you find something down there?" Diana asked once they were alone.
Since all the island's strange changes had occurred after Clark went underground, she suspected he knew something. She also guessed that the earlier earthquakes were likely his doing.
"Kind of," Clark said. "I'll take you to see later—you'll understand. But for now, let's stop those two."
Gazing toward Godzilla and Kong, Clark weighed their strengths. Kong had only taken minor injuries in their earlier fight, and after this time to heal, he was likely back to full strength.
As for Godzilla, Clark had never seen him use an atomic breath attack—probably because he hadn't reached full maturity. Without it, Clark doubted Godzilla could beat Kong in close combat.
Kong's longer reach gave him a significant advantage in a brawl, especially against Godzilla's shorter arms.
Clark remembered a movie from his previous life, King Kong vs. Godzilla, an old Japanese film depicting their first clash. In that film, Godzilla couldn't beat Kong in hand-to-hand combat, but once he used atomic breath, Kong was forced to retreat.
Clark did want to see a Kong vs. Godzilla fight—but not one to the death. One of these monsters was already his, and the other would likely be his in the near future. He wasn't about to let his two "pets" tear each other apart.
Stopping them seemed the only sensible choice.
