Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 What a coincidence

When Daisy messaged Clark, he had just left the Ancient One's Mirror Dimension. At that moment, Clark was also debating whether to track down Kamar-Taj—maybe he could sneak in and study it a bit.

He was interested in all kinds of magic, but he was especially greedy for the Mirror Dimension and Portal Magic. In particular, the legendary sling ring portals—though used mainly for transportation—were basically useless in a fight, unless...

Clark remembered Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos's minions, who gave the Avengers a hard time, had their arms chopped off instantly by a simple portal. They bypassed all defenses.

At the time, Clark thought:

"Why didn't Doctor Strange just open a portal over Thanos's head when he was tied up?"

Clark still couldn't believe Thanos actually managed to snap his fingers. So to him, this one-damage-but-insta-kill, unblockable skill was incredibly valuable.

By the time Clark noticed Daisy's message, it was already almost evening. He had just finished showering and was ready to chill in bed and browse YouTube when he saw her message.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. found it already? Makes sense, in the movie they located the hammer the very next day."

Clark thought about it. It was already late, and Thor had already tried lifting the hammer. So nothing major should happen tonight. Besides, it'd be a pain to travel at night, and Jane's place didn't have great accommodations—not like Tony's comfy mansion and king-sized bed.

So, he texted Daisy back saying he'd head to New Mexico in the morning.

At the same time, Nick Fury was going through Coulson's report, and the further he read, the more his brows furrowed. The report was full of unknowns—way too many. And a man like Fury, who wanted to be in control of everything, didn't like unknowns.

After some thought, he decided to call Natasha.

The next morning, just before Clark was about to head to New Mexico, he got a call.

Looking at the screen, it was a strange number.

"Hello?"

"Clark, it's me—Natasha."

"Natasha? What made you call me out of the blue?"

Clark was puzzled. Though he was talkative, he knew his relationship with this widowed spy was nothing more than a casual acquaintance—if that.

"Something up?"

"Yeah, I need a favor. In New Mexico, we've discovered a hammer that's emitting constant electromagnetic waves.

Even stranger, no one—man or machine—can lift it. It just won't budge."

Natasha gave Clark a brief overview of the situation. She didn't really know why Nick Fury wanted her to contact Clark, but orders were orders.

And truth be told, reading Coulson's report made Natasha curious too. If she weren't tied up with her current mission, she might've gone to see this immovable hammer herself.

"Forehead…"

Clark looked at his phone, a bit awkward. He already knew what Natasha was talking about. He was planning to head to New Mexico anyway—just that he planned to side with Thor.

After all, Clark wanted Thor to eventually take him to Nidavellir.

"What's wrong, Clark? Something the matter?" Natasha asked after a moment of silence.

"No, no problem. I was actually just about to head to New Mexico."

Clark hadn't expected S.H.I.E.L.D. to contact him—but hey, what could they really do to him even if he told the truth?

"You're going to New Mexico too? So… you do know about the hammer?" Natasha was quick to catch on.

"I know Dr. Jane Foster. You guys took all her equipment and data."

Natasha was briefly stunned. Now that she knew Clark was personally connected to Jane, she had to rethink her approach.

"After we finish copying everything, we'll return the equipment and data to Dr. Foster."

After considering it, Natasha convinced Nick Fury to return Jane's stuff. Even though Clark had nothing to do with S.H.I.E.L.D., the fact that he was willing to travel there today meant they had at least some level of rapport.

And Natasha was confident that, given a choice between a mysterious hammer and pissing off Clark, Fury would pick the hammer. S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't HYDRA—or at least, not all of them were like HYDRA.

Because if Clark were to go ballistic, they had no way to stop him. And Tony Stark, who was supposed to balance him, was clearly not in the best condition right now.

So she simply agreed to return everything.

"Do you have any information on the hammer?" she asked, returning to the main topic.

Why ask Clark? Because both Nick and Fury (Talos) were aliens, and they figured maybe Clark had insight into this thing from space.

They had already exhausted all their conventional analysis methods. Aside from detecting the hammer's constant electromagnetic waves, they hadn't been able to identify what it was, what it was made of, or how to move it.

"I'm not sure. I didn't look too closely last time, but I'll check it out when I get there."

Clark was interested in the hammer. Last time there were too many people around, but this time he was going in as Superman.

Half an hour later, Clark arrived just outside S.H.I.E.L.D.'s military outpost around Mjolnir.

The scene was buzzing with activity, with agents packing up equipment. If Clark hadn't known better, he'd think they were moving house.

When he showed up, Coulson was informed and quickly came out to meet him.

Coulson didn't mention Jane or the others—he just led Clark straight to the hammer.

Clark had to admit, S.H.I.E.L.D. was impressive. In under a day, they had already built a heavily fortified base around Mjolnir.

"We have no idea what this thing is made of. We used our hardest drills, but they just got flattened. And it looks light—but even our biggest cranes can't move it an inch."

"And when we analyzed the soil underneath, we found the density was high—but still normal for a meteor impact. Logically, this kind of soil shouldn't support that much weight. Yet… somehow, it holds. It's like the hammer is anchored to that point in space itself."

As Coulson finished explaining, the two of them finally arrived at Mjolnir's crater.
