Chapter 119: Alerting the Supervisor
"Is that… Rock Slide?"
Although the match had long been over, Basalt's jaw was still hanging open.
Had his Drilbur broken through again at a critical moment?
In the last match, it had mastered an explosive new technique for Bulldoze.
This time was even more incredible—it had learned a completely new move?
"Does my Drilbur… truly have what it takes to be a legend?"
Basalt was stunned.
Breaking through twice in one day was not something an ordinary Pokémon could do, was it? Yet, his Drilbur had done it!
After the initial shock, Basalt's expression shifted to one of pure ecstasy.
He had won!
He had finally made it into the upper echelons of Group A.
Now, he would get another share of the precious berries.
Excellent!
"What should I choose this time? A Sandscale Berry? Or maybe a Liechi Berry?" Basalt thought gleefully.
Drilbur's speed had already increased last time, so the effect of another Sandscale Berry would be greatly diminished. Choosing a Liechi Berry to boost its attack power seemed like a much better option.
"Chari!"
With the battle over, Drilbur dismissed the sandstorm. Though it was panting heavily, its spirits were incredibly high.
I said I'd take you down, and I did!
The feeling of a successful show of strength was deeply satisfying.
"Drilbur, you're incredible!"
Basalt gave a huge thumbs-up, his admiration for his Pokémon overflowing like a surging river. Honestly, if Drilbur wasn't so averse to it, Basalt would have wanted to give it a big kiss.
"He really won! The new top dog of the training camp has appeared!" someone remarked with a sigh.
The trainers in the upper ranks of Group A had earned the nickname "the top dogs" of the camp. But after watching Basalt's performance, everyone was completely in awe. There was no room for argument.
However, in contrast to the amazement of the spectating trainees, Mr. Shane wore a grave expression. He turned to Mr. Leo and said, "Mr. Leo, please take your group's trainees back. This matter is of great importance. I need to inform the supervisor immediately!"
"Don't worry, Mr. Shane. I'll make sure the trainees understand not to speak of this carelessly," Mr. Leo replied with a nod.
With their greater life experience, the instructors understood the terrifying implications of Basalt's achievement far better than the students.
A Pokémon at the Novice-Rank was able to use a weather-setting move?
Before today, they would have dismissed it as a wild fantasy. But now, the proof was right before their eyes, and they had no choice but to accept it.
Under Mr. Leo and Mr. Shane's direction, all the trainees were ordered to remain in their classroom.
Basalt, on the other hand, was summoned by Mr. Shane to his office. Mr. Shane himself simply took out his Pokédex, dialed a number, and stepped outside.
"What's going on?"
Basalt was completely confused, utterly unaware of just how staggering his performance had been.
Metro City was a coastal city, bordered to the east by a vast, boundless ocean.
On an island somewhere off the coast of Metro City, a young man in his late twenties stood ramrod straight on a cliff, his brow furrowed as he watched an intense battle between two Pokémon—one in the water and one in the air.
The Pokémon in the sky was a large, bat-like creature with enormous ears and a ruff of white fur around its neck. Its massive wings were purple on the outside and black on the inside, with a teal membrane and two red claws on each wing.
The Pokémon in the water resembled a dragon, with three sharp, upward-pointing crests on its head and a distinctive, finned carapace on its back. Its mouth was perpetually open, with two blue barbels hanging down, giving it an exceptionally fierce appearance.
They were Noivern and Gyarados.
Boom!
The Gyarados in the water fixed its eyes on the Noivern in the sky. With a powerful swing of its tail, a massive tornado erupted from the sea, surging upwards.
But the Noivern was clearly no pushover. It tilted its giant ears toward the vortex and unleashed a terrifying sonic attack. The blast of sound instantly disintegrated the tornado into nothingness.
Boomburst!
After shattering the tornado, Noivern flapped its wings, summoning a hurricane several times more powerful than the previous whirlwind. As it swept over the ocean, it created a waterspout, sucking the seawater upwards.
The Gyarados, still in the sea, was caught off guard and sucked into the watery vortex.
"RAWR!"
With a furious roar, Gyarados, instead of trying to escape the torrent, began to ride the current, charging towards the sky.
Waterfall!
It turned out the Gyarados hadn't been caught by accident. It had intentionally allowed itself to be swept up, using the move Waterfall to close the distance to its airborne opponent for a surprise attack!
Ring, ring, ring!
Just then, the communicator in the young man's pocket rang at the most inopportune moment.
"Hm?"
The young man's brow furrowed slightly.
He was Damian, Metro City's most outstanding prodigy trainer of the last decade, a gym-leader-level talent. In three months, he was set to take over as the new Gym Leader of Metro City. To ensure he passed the League's assessment with a perfect score, he had gone into seclusion on this island for intensive training.
He was also, technically, the supervisor of this year's training camp in Metro City. Of course, it was mostly a title; the actual duties were handled by his two deputies. At most, he would offer some guidance to the city team members after the camp concluded. He would, however, lead the team during the provincial tournament.
Before starting his seclusion, Damian had made it very clear that he was not to be disturbed unless it was for something critically important.
But now, the call had come.
"Shane?"
Damian's eyebrows shot up. Could something have actually happened at the training camp?
"Hello?" Damian answered the call.
"Supervisor, something huge has happened! A new trainee at the camp, Basalt, has broken into the upper ranks of Group A…" Mr. Shane's booming voice came through the line, filled with irrepressible excitement.
"Oh? A trainee made it to the upper ranks of Group A?" Damian replied, a hint of pleasant surprise in his voice.
The trainees in Group A were the key to Metro City achieving a good ranking in the provincial tournament. Damian had specifically instructed his subordinates to inform him of any changes in Group A's roster.
But this Basalt hadn't just made it into Group A; he had shot straight into the upper echelons? It seemed Metro City had produced another talent. No wonder Shane was so excited.
Damian didn't know who Basalt was, but he had met Yao and Waylon at the start of the camp and knew they were both rare prospects. For this Basalt to defeat one of them, he had to be skilled.
Perhaps this year, Metro City could truly achieve great results.
"In that case, I'll have to trouble you to put in the extra effort, Mr. Shane. Do your best to guide them. Once I complete my special training in a few days, I'll come to the camp to meet this Basalt."
Damian said his piece and prepared to hang up.
But Mr. Shane was clearly not done. "Supervisor, wait!"
"Hm? Is there something else?" Damian's brow furrowed again. While the training camp was important, his impending gym leader assessment was surely more critical, wasn't it? Shane should know that.
Shane could hear the impatience in Damian's tone. Wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead, he quickly said, "Supervisor, not only did Basalt reach the top of Group A, but his Drilbur can also use the move Sandstorm!"
Fearing Damian hadn't heard him clearly, Shane quickly added, "Sandstorm, a real Sandstorm. Although the power isn't overwhelming and the area of effect isn't that wide, it is definitely Sandstorm!"
"Sandstorm? How is that possible?"
Hearing this, Damian was completely stunned.
Weren't all the trainees at the camp new trainers who had just received their starter Pokémon this year? They should be at the Novice-Rank at most.
A Novice-Rank Pokémon… could master Sandstorm?
"Mr. Shane, are you serious?"
Even though he had heard perfectly well, Damian found it hard to believe.
It felt unreal.
As a certified prodigy, Damian had not only traveled all over the country but had also visited many other regions abroad. But a Novice-Rank Pokémon that could use a weather-setting move? He was sorry, but that was something he had truly never heard of.
"Of course, I'm serious, Supervisor. I've already sent you the video. See for yourself if you don't believe me."
Ping. A video notification arrived.
Opening his Pokédex, Damian took a deep breath and clicked play.
A few moments later, Damian's eyes went wide with utter shock.
Holy…
It's real!
"I… I'm coming back right now!" Damian exclaimed, completely agitated. Ignoring the fierce battle his two Pokémon were still engaged in, he immediately recalled his Gyarados.
"Noivern, we're going back to Metro City! To the training camp!"
Damian called over his bewildered Noivern, leaped into the air, and landed gracefully on its back. With a powerful flap of its wings, the Noivern shot into the sky like an arrow released from a bow.
Metro City's original goal had been to break into the top five of the eleven major cities in Riveria Province.
But now, Damian felt that… they had been thinking too small.
