At an estate, Khamis in Changamwe, love went on brewing in the house of Jacob Karahani..
"Come in, darling!" He said cheerfully as he opened the door.
She came out and followed him into the house. They paused briefly outside as he fished out his keys and began to open the door.
The door swung open, and they entered the room. The room was dark, but Jacob switched on the lights.
Then she saw a grey cat that was sleeping on the sofa but suddenly came alive and brushed itself against Jacob's feet. "Have a seat," he urged her.
She sat on one of the sofas and looked around. It was a cosy, small lobby.
Then he came, sat next to her, and began to talk. "This is where I live. But I'm eagerly looking for another place as I told you. Then I'll quit."
"It's not a bad house. In fact, it's quite okay to me."
"I don't do a lot of cooking in my house," he apologized. "I prefer eating in restaurants. I'm still single and find cooking quite a big problem. I hope you understand."
"I do. Many single men never cook in their houses. I'm not surprised."
Then he changed the subject, "Suppose I want to see my father at Nyali; how do I go about it?"
"It's quite simple. He lives in a large mansion opposite the Nyali Beach Hotel. You can't fail to trace it. If you get lost, you can always call me so that I take you there. But I'm sure you can't get lost because his name plate is well displayed by the roadside."
He was satisfied. With such information, he reasoned, he could always reach his father.
He was sincerely grateful that Gloria had come into his world at the right moment to lead him to his father. She was quite useful to him and had proved it.
He was sure he wanted her; he loved her. She was his.
"Gloria, I loved you at first sight. Will you always be mine; my wife?" he asked.
He put on his sexy look as he talked and looked at her quite lovingly. And that was when she thought she was listening to Esau.
She had heard Esau say such words before. And those sweet and loving words were always accompanied by his hot kisses and caresses.
Gloria was totally lost in fantasy as she thought things were now back on track than the previous night when he scolded and distrusted her.
Here was the warmth and kindness that he always offered. She was still lost in fantasy when Jacob began to fondle her quite tenderly.
Then he whispered romantic words into her ears. Suddenly their eyes and lips met as they kissed. Her body started burning with the usual passion as she felt his warm hands fondling her.
At that moment Jacob saw the unmistakable light in her eyes and knew she was ready for him again. Again, like rain on a thirsty soil, their longing found its season, their covenant sealed in the language of touch.
When it was all over and the fire in their body was put off, they lay relaxing on the bed. Guilt suddenly returned to her when she came out of her fantasy and knew she was still being unfaithful to Esau.
She had betrayed him twice!
But how could she control herself when she always thought it was Esau who was making love to her?
Suddenly, she began sobbing and cursing.
"What's wrong, Gloria?" He became concerned when he saw the change that had abruptly come over her.
"Take me home! I just want to be alone and think." She spoke as she sobbed.
"Are you sick or something?" Jacob was perturbed.
Now she was behaving like a lunatic. Or was she nuts? Some beautiful and sensational women, he told himself, sometimes turned out to be crazy.
"Take me home!" She was now almost hysterical.
He saw the anger in her eyes and decided not to argue. He would drop her, he decided, and then come back to sleep soundly.
"Okay, dress up then," he told her as he jumped out of bed and began to slide into his trousers.
He watched her silently as she dressed. Something was wrong with her, he thought. From a kind, passionate, and loving woman, she had abruptly been transformed into a hysterical and crazy woman.
She finished dressing and seemed ready to leave. Her large, beautiful eyes stared at him sadly as he reached for the car keys which lay on his bedside table.
When they were ready, they quietly slipped out of the house and walked over to the car. Inside the car, Jacob turned the ignition, and the car roared into life as it went speeding along the road on its way to Tudor.
"You'll direct me to your house since I don't know the way," he told her as the car gathered speed.
She kept quiet. Then she was drowned in thoughts. She was only vaguely conscious when twenty minutes later the car approached Makupa roundabout, and Jacob swerved the car onto the road to Tudor.
Then she came alive and said: "Turn here!"
A few minutes later, his Renault came to a standstill outside her house, and he jumped out of the car as he went to open the door for her. Her apartment stood in darkness as it appeared that most people had gone to sleep.
They just stood in the shadows, and Jacob began to talk. "Don't you think I should see you into the house, my love?"
"No thank you for the lift. I'll manage on my own." She said as she started moving towards the house.
"Wait!" Jacob said loudly as he ran after her.
She paused in her footsteps and looked at him quite baffled. "What is it?"
"Can't you even kiss me goodbye, my love?" He held her tightly as he talked.
Even before she could begin to protest, she found her mouth inside his when he started kissing her quite hungrily as they stood in the shadows. Unknown to both of them, Esau, who was in her bedroom had heard the car coming and now stood by the window peering through the curtains.
Esau only watched sadly and angrily as they kissed, and he started to curse under his breath. What he had suspected, he thought seriously, was true, and there was no need for further evidence.
He went on watching hopelessly and helplessly when he saw Gloria suddenly pull away from the man who stood admiring her as she walked hurriedly towards the house.
Esau could hardly believe his eyes when he stared at the man. As the man turned and started walking away, Esau thought he was staring at his own reflection in the mirror. And then the bitter truth sunk into his mind; Gloria had found a man who was as good as he was.
