Chapter 54 - Nurse

The nurse had a realistic view of herself. In the best case she was ordinary, in the worst case ugly.

There were no masters who would go out of their way to pursue her. Such distinguished figures could have far more pretty ones lining up for them. The only trouble was that there were some who enjoyed humiliating female servants. The sexual favors that they pursued were one-sided and were unrelated to the beauty of the woman.

Time and again, she saw ruined Mo servants with plain appearances similar to her. However, it was a sight that she had never seen in the inventory wing. It was clear that within the Mo Family, the Sixth House was a good place, and the inventory wing even more so.

The only trouble was that she'd become too comfortable in her position, letting herself relax. And it was nobody else's fault. She could only curse herself for being stupid.

Part of the problem was that she was relatively new. The position of nurse only opened up after she had given birth.

Once she accepted the job, she was immediately thrust into long working hours, where she was allowed to whatever she pleased, as long as she stayed awake and there were no new 'deliveries,' the term they used for the infants.

A moment earlier, Master Yiren verbally berated her in front of the other Master, suspecting that she had slept on her shift.

In fact, this was the case.

Because the shifts were so long, taking all the time away from her day, she was forced to stay up most nights just to spend time with her family. It was too difficult to keep her eyes open, so she napped occasionally on shift.

She was always careful, not doing it for too long at a time, and making use of various people as 'alarms.'

This was the first time a delivery happened to coincide with the napping, and her 'alarms' failed. It worried her tremendously, as she did not know what the consequences of her offense were. In addition, she and the other members of her family were extremely vulnerable. The masters could do with them whatever they wished.

It was one thing to be careless with her own life, but she was jeopardizing her husband's life and the life of her baby.

Even as she nursed Naro, she was preparing her excuse.

Unless she was exposed, telling the truth was out of the question. She was prepared to say that she had been indisposed, using the chamber pot when she was first called. The only problem would be if her 'alarms' told a different story.

She needed to get to them before the master got there. Or perhaps, if they were summoned in her presence, she could hint with her eyes.

The nurse continued to catastrophize.

It was just her luck that the baby was also strange.

If it had been a typical one, she could have at least handled it competently, but facing the agitated baby in her already flustered state, how was she supposed to respond properly? In that moment, while she struggled to even remove it from the cradle, she could feel her value sinking and sinking in the eyes of the master.

She could not help but put some blame on herself.

Even now, the baby was moving quite strangely by her breast, kicking and squirming, but at least it was suckling properly. Otherwise, with the master's eyes on her, she would certainly not be able to escape punishment.

As she was thinking this, she suddenly felt that the suckling was unusually low-powered.

For such an active baby it seemed a bit strange.

However, it still looked the same outwardly, to the eyes of the master, and that was the most important thing. It also meant that there would be more for her own child later.

She decided not to think any longer about it.

The master was still staring at her.

Her priority was to make sure she did not get into trouble.
