Chapter 122 Captain America

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" A HYDRA soldier knocked on the laboratory door from outside.

"Come in."

After receiving the order to enter, the soldier saluted Schmidt and reported, "Officer, Dr. Whitehall has requested permission to go out and search for the Blue Legend."

Schmidt, who had just achieved success with the Tesseract, naturally didn't care for such a small matter. He waved his hand, voice flat. "Let him go. Send a team to assist with his work. We don't need excuses before the Führer."

"Yes, Officer!"

Schmidt turned his eyes to the glowing cube. "Once I weaponize the Tesseract, there'll be only one voice in HYDRA."

Standing nearby, Dr. Zola instinctively stepped back. The air around Schmidt had changed. Even the light from the Tesseract felt sharper.

Theodore Roosevelt Military Base, United States

"Hurry up! Let's move!"

"Pick up the pace! Rogers, move it!"

"Fall in! Rogers, are you deaf?"

The barking of non-commissioned officers echoed across the open field.

A sharp female voice cut through: "Recruits, attention!"

A tall woman in uniform strode in front of the lineup. Her reddish-brown hair was tied neatly, her stance firm. She walked with purpose, the kind that didn't invite challenges.

"Gentlemen, I am Agent Carter," she said in a crisp English accent. "I'll be overseeing operations in this department."

One recruit muttered under his breath, loud enough: "What's with the accent, Queen Victoria? Thought I joined the U.S. Army."

Carter heard it. "Name?"

"Gilmore Hodge, Your Majesty," he said without shame.

"Step forward, Hodge."

Hodge strolled forward lazily.

"One more step with your right foot," she said.

Hodge grinned. "We about to throw hands? I got a move you'll like."

Carter didn't reply. She simply punched him. One clean hit. Hodge hit the dirt before he knew what happened.

Gasps scattered through the line.

From nearby, three men had been watching: George, Colonel Phillips, and Dr. Erskine, just exiting a jeep.

"Agent Carter!"

"Colonel Phillips!" Carter turned and saluted sharply.

Phillips looked at the dazed recruit on the ground. "You're settling in just fine, I see."

Then to Hodge: "On your feet. You stand there until someone tells you otherwise. Move."

Bloody-nosed and stunned, Hodge stumbled up. "Yes, sir!"

In the line, Steve Rogers caught sight of George and blinked in surprise.

George saw him too. He didn't wave , just gave a small nod. Steve straightened.

"General Barton once said," Colonel Phillips began, "Weapons win wars. But victory? Victory depends on soldiers."

He let the words hang.

"We'll win because we have the best soldiers." His eyes moved down the line… and landed on Steve.

He paused.

Then turned and gave Dr. Erskine a look: Really? This one?

Erskine stared straight ahead.

Phillips sighed, then addressed the whole group again. "And they'll get even better."

He turned to pace. "The Strategic Scientific Reserve includes elite representatives of the free world. Our goal is to be the best fighting force in history. One week from now, we'll choose a soldier to undergo the first phase of the Super Soldier program."

"Until then , move!"

As the recruits jogged off, Steve glanced back again. George was still watching him.

Carter stepped forward and saluted George. "Your Excellency, Count."

"Agent Carter," George said with a relaxed nod. "You have my contact. Use it, if needed."

"Thank you, sir."

It was a simple remark, but Carter knew the weight it carried. George's endorsement meant smoother days ahead. Even Phillips would tread lightly.

George appreciated Carter. She wasn't his type, aesthetically, but she had grit and clarity. If not for her role as Captain America, he might've offered her a post in his security company.

"Let's go, George," Phillips said. "I'll show you the equipment labs. It's practically Stark's territory now. He'll probably have something sarcastic ready for you."

George chuckled. "Still holding a grudge over who got invited first?"

"Pretty much."

Though George rarely showed up in public anymore, he hadn't let his old friendships die. For old companions like Phillips and General Arthur, George still sent fine wine regularly, sometimes even visiting in person.

In the U.S., the President might change, but the Military remained. And George, with his defense industries, knew how to maintain those bridges.

"I won't stay long. Today I just came to check in. Let me know when you run the trial."

"Will do."

Everyone understood that Howard Stark didn't like surprises , or extra observers. Best not to test his nerves during critical phases.

George's visit today was mostly about keeping track , seeing Erskine, checking on Steve.

The training was brutal—physical tests, obstacle courses, sprints, and long-distance runs. For someone like Steve, it was hell.

He was last in nearly everything. Some scores barely registered.

Worse, Hodge was relentless , always finding an excuse to jab at Steve, sometimes literally. But Carter noticed. She saw every jab, every stumble, and , more importantly , that Steve never quit.

While others coasted, Steve pushed until he dropped. Then he got back up.

To complete the training and perform his best, Steve always gave his all. After every training session, he would be exhausted, collapsing on the ground, completely drained of energy. To achieve his current results, Steve had put in more effort than anyone else.

Orochimaru's Research Base in the Naruto World

"Orochimaru, how are the clones I asked you to make coming along?" George asked.

"Your Excellency, they have been cultivated and are over here," Orochimaru replied.

After speaking, Orochimaru led George to a laboratory, where a clone was placed on the experimental table.

"Your Excellency, this is the clone you requested."

"Hmm, good. I'll take this one then. You've worked hard, Orochimaru."

"It's my duty, Your Excellency."

Although George spent most of his time in the Marvel Universe, he still made time each month to visit the Naruto World , mainly to accompany Tsunade and Princess Miyu. This time, he didn't stay long. After Orochimaru prepped the clone, George stored it in his spatial dimension and returned to Marvel.

Marvel Training Base

"Faster, girls! Even my grandma's got more muscle than you. God bless her. Get moving!" Agent Carter barked, stopwatch in hand.

"You're not going to pick Rogers, are you?" Colonel Phillips asked Dr. Erskine as they walked from the barracks toward the training yard.

"Not going to , I already did," Erskine said plainly.

"That's great," Phillips replied, not sounding convinced. "I didn't say anything when you brought in a 90-pound asthmatic kid. Figured you needed a guinea pig. Didn't think you'd go through with it."

"Get up!" Carter called out, making the recruits on the ground scramble to their feet.

"This kid's arms look like pipe cleaners," Phillips muttered, eyeing Steve. "I think he's about to cry."

"I value character more than muscle," Erskine said.

"You know how much we've sunk into this program?" Phillips asked. His tone shifted slightly , not angry, just heavy.

"I know."

"I've been groveling to committees whose names I can't even pronounce. Just give me some results."

"You'll get them."

"Hodge passed all the tests. Strong, quick, obedient. Soldier material."

Erskine looked at Steve quietly.

"He's a bully," the doctor said.

"You don't win wars by being nice."

Phillips didn't wait. He walked over to a truck, grabbed a dummy grenade from a crate, pulled the pin, and shouted, "Grenade!"

The recruits panicked—everyone dove for cover—except Steve. Without hesitation, he hurled himself on the grenade, curling over it with his arms. "Get down! Run!" he yelled, face tight with fear.

The grenade didn't explode.

People started peeking out.

Steve stayed there a beat longer, then sat up, confused. "It's a dud?"

"All clear! Fall in!" Phillips called out.

Steve looked at Carter, still unsure.

Dr. Erskine turned to Phillips.

Phillips sighed. "He's still skinny."

But he didn't argue anymore.

Dr. Erskine smiled. He had his candidate.

That night, the barracks were quiet. The other recruits had been shipped out , Steve was alone.

A knock.

"May I come in?" Dr. Erskine stood at the door, holding a wine bottle and two glasses.

"Of course," Steve said, putting down the book in his hand.

The doctor sat on the opposite bunk and poured the wine.

"Nervous?"

"Probably."

"Me too."

Steve hesitated. "Can I ask you something?"

"Only one?" Erskine smiled.

"Why me?"

The doctor sipped his wine.

"That one's enough."

He looked at Steve for a long moment, then explained the truth about Schmidt, about the serum's unpredictability, about what it did to the person inside.

"It makes good better. And bad worse. That's why you."

That quiet talk, over cheap wine and wooden bunks, was more than a chat. It was a turning point.

Later, people would say Dr. Erskine made Steve Captain America. But the truth? That night, he made Steve Rogers believe it himself.
