Chapter 117: Agent Carter
After Paul returned, he called George to report what had happened at the exhibition, including the attack at the entrance. Over the years, Paul had made significant achievements, leading PL Holding Group Company from its initial obscurity to its current status as an industry giant.
However, only Paul knew that he was merely executing his boss's plan; had someone else taken his place, they would have achieved the same results.
Nonetheless, George still respected Paul's dedication to his work, and he executed his ideas, which were just mere drafts, into full-proof plans.
"Boss, today's incident has been investigated, and it was an attack launched by HYDRA against Howard Stark. Colonel Phillips once again asked me to convey his invitation to you."
"Hmm, have the supplies been prepared for them before delivery?"
"Yes, Boss."
"Very good. You've worked hard. The military side should continue following the previous plan; let nature take its course. I will also assign more security personnel for the company's senior executives, so you can rest assured about safety."
"Thank you, Boss."
After hanging up the phone, Paul, who was nearly sixty, couldn't help but recall the moment he first met his boss twenty years ago. Two decades had passed, and as one of the longest-serving employees who had seen his boss's true face, Paul noted that his boss still looked young, tall, and handsome, as if time had ceased to affect him. His boss had never hidden from him, which was both reassuring and frightening, but it also inspired a deep longing. Youth and vitality were what people of Paul's age longed for the most.
George couldn't help but smile as he looked at a report on the achievements of the Strategic Scientific Reserve on his desk.
"Monday, how is the replication experiment coming along?" George called out to the air.
"35 minutes left to complete."
George then went to the underground laboratory. This facility, brought back by George from the DC world of "Suicide Squad," was at least a hundred years ahead of current technology. George had also installed many robotic arms in the laboratory, which could be controlled by Monday to conduct experiments.
Half an hour later, George examined the palm-sized metal in his hand and said to Monday, "Perform the final test."
"Yes, Master."
"Master, the original Adamantium replication experiment has been completed, and all data and formulas have been fully recorded."
"Very good. Use the original Adamantium to modify my car; the color should remain black."
"Okay, Master."
After speaking, George returned to his study.
Two years ago, Colonel Phillips had invited George to join the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), but George had never agreed to that. As a major capitalist, he preferred others to work for him; he wasn't about to work in a subordinate department of the military and take orders from anyone.
However, that didn't stop George from laying the groundwork in advance. He inserted some of his people and arranged for his company to be the construction contractor for the entire laboratory, installing miniature cameras throughout the Strategic Scientific Reserve at opportune times.
These monitoring devices, brought back by George from the DC world, were undetectable by current technology, so every move within the entire department was under Monday's surveillance.
The results were evident; in fact, all of George's previous arrangements were directed at obtaining the original Adamantium formula. The original Adamantium was the material used for the shield that Colonel Phillips had given to Howard Stark for research; it was a product of an experimental accident.
After Dr. Myron Maclain was recruited into the Strategic Scientific Reserve, he sought to create an indestructible alloy for the United States. One day, while resting in the laboratory, Vibranium, iron, and several chemicals on the workbench accidentally combined, forming the hardest known metal on Earth.
However, due to the unknown synthesis process and the proportions of various components, Dr. Maclain was unable to reproduce this metal.
This accidental product was later forged into that iconic round shield, which was given to Captain America, becoming his signature weapon.
While the original timeline unfolded this way, George had no intention of giving up on the metal formula. Therefore, he arranged for numerous cameras in advance solely to obtain it. Hard work pays off; after a long wait, George finally acquired the final formula.
As for the other achievements of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, George truly didn't care much for them.
While George was still researching the various uses of original Adamantium in alchemy, Agent Carter, disguised as a maid, took advantage of the guard change to slip outside a room in the HYDRA secret base at Kaufman Castle in the Bavarian Alps of southern Germany.
This castle, once valued for scientific research and material storage, had lost much of its importance after Schmidt injected himself with the serum. Long-term comfortable living had caused the HYDRA soldiers stationed there to relax their vigilance.
Peggy Carter had originally been trained by the British intelligence organization called Kingsman and was later assigned to the British Logistics Bureau for code-breaking work. Her fiancƩ, Fred Wells, who worked in the Ministry of Interior, had successfully proposed to her, planning to marry her and have her become a full-time housewife, raising children.
Colonel Edwards, head of Logistics, received a transfer request from the Special Operations Executive, but a deeply infatuated Carter refused.
At the engagement party, her brother Michael, already a military officer, recognized that his sister had a restless heart and would never be content as a mediocre housewife for the rest of her life. He recommended that she join the Special Operations Executive as a female agent to unleash her potential.
On the day of her wedding, as her mother helped her into her wedding dress, she cried tears of joy. However, tragedy struck when the military delivered the news that her brother Michael had died on the front lines.
The entire family was grief-stricken, and Carter resolutely removed her engagement ring and reported to the Special Operations Executive. She was then transferred directly to MI5, the British counterintelligence and security agency, becoming an agent.
Her current mission was to rescue a German doctor who was believed to be a key figure in a certain experiment. According to intelligence, Dr. Abraham Erskine was being held in a room within the old castle. Following the horrifying sight of Red Skull injecting his enhanced serum, Dr. Erskine had been consumed by remorse, blaming himself for creating a terrifying monster.
In the days following the serum injection, he had personally witnessed Schmidt brutally beating dozens of prisoners to death to test and learn to control his modified body. Furthermore, even those close to Schmidt were ruthlessly killed for making mistakes.
For the past two years, Dr. Erskine had been researching the serum in hopes of perfecting the formula, a task assigned to him by Red Skull; otherwise, he might have been killed by Schmidt long ago.
Since Schmidt stopped providing him with information about his family, Erskine had lost the will to live. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt, he woke up to find a photo of his wife and two children in his pocket.
From the children's heights in the photo, he inferred it had been taken recently. Their clothing and expressions suggested they were living well. Although he didn't know who had given him the photo or the intent behind it, Dr. Erskine understood that the person wanted him to keep living. After all, only by living could he hope to see his family again. He kept the picture hidden deep within his clothing.
This photo had been sent by someone arranged by George to ensure the doctor remained hopeful.
"Bang! Bang!"
"Dr. Erskine! Dr. Abraham Erskine!"
At the sound of a low voice from outside the door, Dr. Erskine, already lying in bed, sat up. A woman dressed as a maid opened the door and walked in.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"I am Agent Peggy Carter from British MI5, and I'm here to rescue you. Doctor, hurry and come with me."
Before Dr. Erskine could respond, Carter took out a backpack and donned it.
"Alright, Doctor, follow me; we don't have much time," she urged as she walked out the door.
The two ascended the stairs to the top floor of the castle. The soldiers guarding that area had been dealt with when Carter entered, and since the shift had just changed, they were unlikely to be discovered.
After regrouping with the rendezvous team, the squad managed to escape under the cover of night.
