Chapter 110: Re-electing the Shadow
"Ah!"
"How could this be?"
"Hmph, Hokage-sama, our Uchiha clan demands an explanation."
The crowd, which had initially been observing the situation, was stunned by the sight before them, and everyone glared at Shimura Danzo.
Lying on the ground, Danzo's right arm was covered in eleven densely packed eyes. These were not ordinary eyes; they were Sharingan, the sacred bloodline of the Uchiha clan in Konoha.
These eleven Sharingan represented at least six Uchiha lives, which explained the Uchiha Jonin's eruption. Even the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was visibly shaken by Danzo's grotesque crime.
A cold shiver ran through the room. Even hardened Jonin found themselves averting their gaze. A man who had called himself Konoha's protector now wore the stolen eyes of its children.
"Clap, clap, clap."
As George clapped his hands, everyone in the venue turned their attention to him again.
"Everyone has seen Shimura Danzo's condition. Now, let's hear what Orochimaru has to say."
George returned to his seat, utterly calm. Orochimaru rose slowly.
"Hiruzen-sensei, long time no see. Hehe. Hello everyone. I believe you all know I defected from the village. But many of you may not know the reasons. Today, I will tell you."
"The biggest reason was unfairness. As the general commander on the front lines during the Third Ren Realm War, my contributions were unmatched. Yet, I was pulled back to make way for Minato Namikaze. Hehe. And about the Flying Thunder God Jutsu—why was he allowed to learn it, while others like me were denied access to the Scroll of Seals?"
"As for my experiments—yes, I experimented on bodies. But they were corpses from the battlefield. Test subjects? Provided by Shimura Danzo himself. Our agreement was simple: I would assist in researching Hashirama Senju's cells. I was a researcher, nothing more. Of course, I made mistakes, like secretly reading the Scroll of Seals. Hehe. But with my battlefield record, I could have earned those jutsu anyway."
Funny, isn't it? Morality always seems to apply only to those not in favor.
Indeed, many ninjas in the room had never heard this explanation. Only now did they begin to see how deep the contradictions ran.
"Orochimaru, did you also help Shimura Danzo transplant the Sharingan onto his arm?" Fugaku Uchiha asked, voice heavy with fury.
"I never aided him in that. Danzo didn't trust me enough to let me perform the surgery. If you're fast, you may still find the surgical records within Root. Hehe. What do you think, Hiruzen-sensei?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi stood silent, reeling. An arm full of Sharingan, exposed for all to see. Danzo was beyond saving. But how could he, the Hokage, distance himself now?
"Old Man, did you know about this? Even after Orochimaru defected, you let people continue researching my grandpa's cells?" Tsunade shouted, voice trembling with fury. Her hands shook. "That's my grandfather's bloodline you butchered!"
"Hoage-sama, you need to give the Uchiha clan an explanation," Fugaku Uchiha demanded.
"Everyone, please remain calm," Hiruzen Sarutobi said. "I truly was unaware of Shimura Danzo's actions. I will assign Anbu to investigate Root thoroughly. All findings will be made public."
"Hehe," George said lazily. "Koharu Utatane made false accounts, and you claimed ignorance. Now, Danzo has a Frankenstein arm of Sharingan, and again, you plead innocence. Third Hokage, how do you still expect Konoha to trust your words?"
He leaned back slightly.
"Since the Will of Fire means passing the torch to the next generation, the Third Hokage steps down. It's time to re-elect the Shadow."
George closed his eyes. He was done talking.
His words hit the room like thunder. The civilian Jonin hadn't expected this to escalate so suddenly.
Tsunade, still boiling, understood the implications instantly. The Daimyo-sama had lost faith in Hiruzen. If the Jonin agreed, Hiruzen would lose the entire political foundation of the village.
Since Konoha's founding, it had relied on the Land of Fire's support. No other Daimyo provided as much funding or mission volume. If the Daimyo withdrew, the village would not survive for long.
All eyes turned to Hiruzen Sarutobi.
He had two choices: relinquish power and preserve what little dignity remained, or defy the Daimyo-sama, sever ties with the Land of Fire, and try to rally the village against external pressure.
But the time to act had passed. The Daimyo's personal guards had already subdued Root's personnel effortlessly. That alone showed how deep George's reach extended.
The embezzlement of a billion Ryo had shattered civilian trust. The Senju and Uchiha clans stood divided. Not even Mitokado Homura could shift the mood.
"My Lord, the Third Hokage was unaware of these matters, so Konoha—"
Homura began to speak, voice trembling.
George cut him off. "Doesn't matter. All this happened during his reign. Unless a new Hokage is chosen, the Daimyo's mansion will freeze all support to Konoha, including mission assignments. I cannot entrust national security to someone who can't control his own men."
The Jonin stiffened.
Konoha, the largest ninja village, would collapse without Daimyo funding.
"Daimyo-sama, is this a threat?" Homura asked, trying to summon his old strength.
"No," George replied flatly. "This isn't a threat. It's policy."
Silence.
Hiruzen Sarutobi's eyes drifted across the room. The Uchiha clan glared at him. Tsunade seethed. Orochimaru sneered. Mitokado Homura stood cornered. Not a soul offered him support.
He looked down at his hands. Once revered as the God of Shinobi, now they trembled.
Hiruzen opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His pipe slipped from his fingers and clinked to the floor.
"Very well," he said at last. "The Shadow will be re-elected in three days."
George didn't open his eyes.
"Aren't all the Jonin already present? What's the delay? Waiting for the perverted sage who hasn't shown his face in years?"
He had seen through Hiruzen's plan to contact Jiraiya in secret and maneuver him into the seat, ensuring that the real power remained in Hiruzen's shadow.
Exposed.
Hiruzen exhaled slowly.
"Let's do as Daimyo-sama suggests. The Hokage selection will begin now."
He sat down heavily. In that moment, he seemed to age ten years.
