Chapter 1 - Investment or Gambling?

"Haaahays," a slender young man sighed as he looked at a single golden coin in his hands.

"I have been relying on my system just to survive this month. Never in my darned life did I know that low-level adventurers are just like helpers in our clan." The young man sighed again.

"What do I do with this coin?"

A young, slender man sat among the rubble of an old castle, his pointed ears protruding from his long black hair. His face contorted as he stared at a holographic screen. He was having a tough time deciding how to use his lone golden coin. An elven bow displayed in a weapon shop, durable than what his mother gave him, priced at 200 silver coins. A gold coin's value is comparable to 500 silver coins. If he bought the bow, he would still have 300 silver coins left.

His dreams were still haunted by the button, which thirsted for the sacrifice of his only gold coin.

"Argh!" He pulled his face in frustration.

At a young age, he was gradually upgrading his system by doing labor, pushing carts, or taking advantage of his Coin Drop system. His system's unique skill, Coin Drop, is a skill that lets him earn coins from a creature's corpse. It started as a trifling 1 bronze coin, saving all his earnings and spending it all to upgrade his system, hoping that it would give a useful ability like some systems.

"It's an investment. It's an investment. It's an investment," Feng Marino assured himself, his hand hovered over the upgrade button.

Feng Marino looked at the screen in front of him. His eyes reddened and moist, and his mouth won't stop quivering. He scanned the area, trying to find something where he could release his overwhelming emotions. As he scanned the area, he saw a dilapidated wall covered in moss. Feng Marino stood up from the rubble as he walked in front of the wall, admiring its greenish hue and weathered look.

Thud! Thud! Thud!...

"Argh!!!" Feng Marino screamed while he slammed his head on the wall.

"Alas, risk comes from not knowing what you're doing. All my investment just for it to become Gambling. What will my future entail? I have been working hard for months, and this is what I get. How frustrating!" He complained.

Feng Marino stamped his foot while recounting his past endeavors. He slapped both sides of his face with his palms. Although this was outside his expectations, he had encountered worse challenges.

A palm approached his back, patting it. Its touch was from the artic frosting on Feng Marino's shoulder. The hand was like creamy snow, formed and sculpted into a human form. A muscular man towered behind Feng Mariano.

"It's cold." Feng Marino patted the frost off his shoulder. "I'm fine, Guy. Just some minor inconvenience. How's the dungeon diving?"

The towering pale-skinned man's name was Guy Rose, from the snowman race.

"They're just a youngling party. All they did was kill fodder." Guy Rose recounted. "What about you? What happened?"

"Haaah." Feng Marino sighed. "Remember the gold coin that my father gave me?"

"Yes?" Guy Rose replied.

"Well, after careful consideration, I decided to use it to finally upgrade my system. But instead of giving me something useful, this damnable thing gave me an option called Gambling. Still pisses me off when I think about it." Feng Marino explained.

"So, what is the problem with this Gambling thingy?" asked Guy Rose.

"Hahays, there's no gambling in the White Tundra, I guess? Let me explain it in simple terms. When I use this Gambling thingy, there is a chance that I might win something. But the lowest cost to use this feature is almost equal to 3 meals at Taberna Pauperis." Feng Mariano said while showing his 3 fingers.

Guy Rose thumped his fist on his palm. "No wonder you look like a dried tree, isolated in a snowstorm. With a cost like that, you'll be poorer than a cricket. You hardly got any jobs, and no carting jobs are offered right now. That feature is practically useless. And I won't loan you anything, you still owe me 100 bronze coins."

"Alright, stop rubbing salt on my wou. . . ." An epiphany struck Feng Marino before he could finished his complaint.

"Can you repeat what you said?" He asked.

"What? The "No wonder you look like a dried tree, isolated in a snowstorm."?" Guy Rose retold.

"No! The last part, repeat the last part."

"Ahh! I won't loan you anything. Are you going to pay me now? Do you have any extra?" Guy Rose said in anticipation.

Feng Marino scratched his head. "No you stupid, I'll pay you next time, but not right now. It's the loan part that I mean. I got a bright idea."

"What is it?"

Feng Marino stayed silent as he ran, signaling Guy Rose with his hand to follow him as they headed back to Southlund town at haste.

Inside Taberna Pauperis, numerous locals are having their lunch, drinking ale, or sharing information. It became a famous tavern all over Midlund because of its cheap meals and ale. They operated 24/7, catering to the adventurers' messy schedules.

Bang!

The tavern's door flew open, revealing two individuals: the slim-bodied Feng Marino and a bulky, pale-skinned snowman, Guy Rose. All the customers stopped eating and were looking at them curiously at these two known odd jobbers. A man dressed as a waiter placed the menu on the table, sighing as he looked at the two troublemakers.

"Who wants to gamble?"
