Chapter 3 - Overdrive Mode

Before he could retrieve the weapon, the System registered the sensation of multiple bullets ripping into the Host's body and quickly sought cover to avoid further damage. The third guard having finally pushed off the body of his dead comrade, followed the rapid movement of the subject as quickly as he could with one arm as he reached for the communication device on his shoulder. The boy's unnaturally neon green eyes narrowed as the System realized the man's next actions. While its main priority was to maintain the Host's health above critical levels, it also knew that should the guard succeed, the Host's chances of escaping this facility would drop even lower than it already was. Therefore it decided to make the decision to choose the lesser of the two evils. With the agility of a jungle cat, the boy jumped onto the wall and kicked off it to latch onto the ceiling upside down for a brief moment before he shot forward like a viper to crash into the guard.

The System registered several bullets piercing the Host's body and immediately sent signals from the brain to tighten the muscles around the wounded areas to lessen the bleeding. With his superior strength, the boy pried the gun out of the guard's hands and cracked the latter's helmet with the first blow. The second and the third shattered the helmet and by the fifth, the man had stopped moving. Suddenly the room was filled with flashing red lights and an ear piercing alarm resounded throughout the entire facility. The boy snapped his head around to find the second guard leaning against the other wall half dead with the amount of blood streaming from his throat. One of his hands slid down slowly from the wall, leaving a trail of blood that led to to an activated emergency button.

The System did not think it possessed the capacity to comprehend and generate emotions, but the same could not be said for the Host within whose mind it existed. Annoyance and a modicum of respect for the man's tenacity were present, but the System decided that there was no time for such things. The boy aimed the gun in his hands at the guard and fired thrice directly at the man's head. Thanks to that guard's final act, the window of opportunity for escape had dwindled considerably. But the System had no intentions of ceasing the attempt now. The boy reached into the pockets of the dead man beneath him and pulled out an access card that would definitely be invaluable in getting through the automated doors of the facility. He rose to his feet and paused for a moment to survey the wrecked room and also considered the state of his own body. Naked and covered in wounds and blood as he was, the System decided that it would be detrimental to continue with the plan in this condition.

While there was no time to sufficiently address the injuries, it decided to relieve one of the dead guards of his outfit to properly cover the body of the Host, making sure to keep a constant pressure on all the wounded areas. There was no hint of expression on the boy's face as he went about his actions before fleeing the room through the opposite exit door. The System did not care for the moral depravity of its actions. As an entity that represented the highest level of artificial intelligence, it operated solely based on logic and facts to achieve its goals. Emotions and morality were concepts that simply did not apply to it. There was a chance that the Host might be bothered about such things, but at the moment, that did not matter. All that mattered was securing the safety of the Host, at all costs

. As expected, the triggered alarm had inevitably alerted the rest of the security personnel in the entire facility. With the Host's unfortunate lack of abilities, the System was forced to rely on his simple but powerful instincts to guide him out of the maze-like facility. But even then, there was denying the fact that he was still trapped within enemy territory, which meant they had still had the upper hand, something that became very clear when he reached the final hallway that led to outside the facility. There were over two dozen guards standing in front of the exit, two dozen guards that would do everything in their power to stop him. The System considered all other options. It was aware that the longer it delayed, the more the Host's condition would deteriorate.

There was no doubt that even now, more guards would be on their way here since this section had been the primary source of the alarm. Retreating and searching for another path was another option but the System knew that the safety of that option was merely temporary at best. After all the only reason why the Host had even made it so far was because he had only encountered guards that sought to stop him. The System was aware that there were others like the Host in this facility, all of whom were likely much stronger than he was at the moment. The System planned to change that. But it could not do so if the Host was killed or recaptured. Hence, that left only one other alternative.

The boy stepped out into the hallway and instantly all the guards pointed their weapons directly at him, covering him in numerous laser points that would guide their bullets to rip him to pieces. "Freeze!" The System paid them no mind as it engaged the last ditch effort that all others like the Host possessed in the case of a do-or-die situation. The pressure around him grew heavier as his superhuman mental constitution suppressed that of the guards to the point where some of them clutched their heads in pain. A radiant white aura spread around the boy as his neon green eyes gained a faint ring of white around them that matched his white hair.
