Chapter 13 - **Chapter 12: Crimson Reckoning**

The mountain shook.

The Gatekeeper's roar shattered clouds and cracked the altar where the Crimson General once stood. Freed from his chains, the colossal beast unfurled wings of molten iron and lightning. Its eyes, golden and ancient, turned toward Jun Mo Xie.

"You carry the Ember," it spoke—not with words, but with thought. "Then you are worthy."

Jun Mo Xie lowered his sword. "Will you fight with us?"

The Gatekeeper lifted its head. "I was bound to protect the Gate. Now I am free to destroy it."

The Crimson General snarled as he rose from the rubble, blood dripping from his mouth. His armor cracked, his aura rippling with corruption. "Fools! You think the Gate will simply vanish? You've only hastened the end!"

He slammed a palm to the earth. Dark energy spiraled outward, warping space. Portals split the sky. From them, horrors emerged—twisted beasts, faceless soldiers, shadows wielding fire.

Lan Xue gasped. "He's opening rifts!"

Mei Yun raised her staff. "We hold the plateau!"

Fei Yan drew her blades. "We hold him!"

Jun Mo Xie nodded. "We end this."

---

The battle ignited like wildfire.

The Gatekeeper descended upon the rift beasts with elemental fury. Lightning exploded across the field. Its roars became war drums that rallied their forces.

Mei Yun summoned gales to hurl enemies off the cliff. Fei Yan became a blur of death, severing limbs before blades even landed. Lan Xue shone with radiant light, healing wounds with every breath.

Yue Ling fought with vengeance in her eyes, her sword moving with brutal precision. "For the west," she whispered with every strike.

Jun Mo Xie focused only on one thing—the Crimson General.

The two forces collided in a whirlwind of flame and darkness.

"You have no idea what you are meddling with!" the General bellowed.

"I know enough," Jun Mo Xie replied. "You used the Gate to cheat fate. I was born to shatter it."

Their weapons struck. Flames erupted, splitting stone.

---

Below, the allied armies surged.

The Jade Scorpion blades dueled enemy lieutenants. Skyborne archers lit the sky with enchanted arrows. The Iron Order smashed through corrupted legions like iron tides.

The terrain cracked under the force of it all.

A rift opened beneath Mei Yun's squad. She shouted for them to fall back, but too late—three were consumed by the void.

"I can't hold the wind here!" she cried.

Jun Mo Xie saw her, and his rage flared.

The Ember responded.

White fire wrapped around his blade as he unleashed a sweeping strike that carved a wall between her and the rift.

"Thanks!" she shouted.

---

On the upper plateau, the Crimson General's body began to change. Corruption spread from his chest, hardening into scale. Wings of blood erupted from his back. A horn grew from his forehead.

He had become something no longer human.

"You forced me to ascend early," he spat. "Now suffer the consequences."

Jun Mo Xie gritted his teeth. "You're not a god. You're a parasite who overfed."

He leapt.

The battle took to the skies.

Flames danced around them as they clashed above the battlefield, a war within a war. The Ember's light was pure, righteous. The General's power was raw chaos.

They spiraled downward, crashing into the altar again. The impact cracked the sky.

---

Lan Xue rushed forward, forming a barrier around Mo Xie's body as he staggered.

"Still breathing," she confirmed.

Fei Yan landed beside her. "We have to help him."

"No," Jun Mo Xie rose. "I must do this alone."

"But—"

"I carry the Ember. The fire must choose."

He stepped forward as the General rose once more, burning and screeching.

Jun Mo Xie channeled the Ember, not as a weapon, but as a beacon.

Visions burst within him—of every moment since his rebirth, of every soul saved, every path not taken.

The Ember flared.

He pointed the sword forward.

"Crimson General, I name you false king!"

The fire surged into a dragon—a spirit of flame and light.

It struck.

The General screamed as the flame wrapped around him, burning not flesh, but fate. His power unraveled, his ascension reversed. The rifts snapped shut.

With one final roar, the Crimson General fell.

The earth shattered beneath him.

Silence fell.

---

The battlefield quieted.

The Gate pulsed once… twice… then dimmed.

The Gatekeeper landed beside Mo Xie.

"It is done," it said.

Jun Mo Xie nodded. "Seal it."

The Guardian roared. A wave of pure energy burst from its chest, washing over the mountain.

The Gate sealed with thunder, leaving only a scar in the sky.

The war was over.

---

Days passed.

The armies began to depart. The Skyborne returned to their mountains. The Jade Scorpions vanished into the sands. The Iron Order marched east.

Fei Yan smirked. "So. Back to boring peace, huh?"

Yue Ling said, "I wouldn't mind a garden."

Lan Xue touched Jun Mo Xie's shoulder. "And you?"

He looked toward the sunset. "There are still secrets. Still shadows. But now\... we face them tog

ether."

They turned toward the world, no longer broken, no longer waiting.

But watched, always, by a fire in the heavens.
