Chapter Twenty-Seven: Ashes and Alarms
The siren's wail followed them through the sliding doors of the hospital, echoing Isabelle's heartbeat as she and Violet sprinted down the corridor.
The unstable sound of footsteps behind them, security guards and nurses, all rushed toward the emergency room.
The twins weren't breathing. That news hit Isabelle like a bullet.
Inside the tiny ICU waiting area, the nanny was standing and looking lifeless, hands pressed in front of her. She looked pale, shocked.
"She's allergic to cinnamon," a nurse said softly. "You left her with a spice-infused oatmeal snack."
The world twisted in Isabelle's chest. 'Cinnamon?'
Their tiny bodies burning from within. The nanny's face stayed blank, and pretty distant.
She didn't apologise. She didn't even cry. It was like she didn't even know what she'd done.
"Where are they?" Isabelle whispered in a trembling voice.
