And the LORD continued His words to Moses, speaking to him in the Tent of Meeting in the wilderness of Sinai. It was the first day of the second month, in the second year since the people had come out of the land of Egypt. And the LORD said:
"Take a census of all the congregation of Israel, numbering them by clans and by families, listing every man by name, one by one. You and Aaron are to register all the men of Israel, twenty years old and above, everyone able to bear arms in the army. One leader from each tribe, the head of his father's house, shall stand with you."
Then the LORD gave the names of the chosen men:
From Reuben: Elizur son of Shedeur.
From Simeon: Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
From Judah: Nahshon son of Amminadab.
From Issachar: Nethanel son of Zuar.
From Zebulun: Eliab son of Helon.
From the sons of Joseph—From Ephraim: Elishama son of Ammihud; From Manasseh: Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
From Benjamin: Abidan son of Gideoni.
From Dan: Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
From Asher: Pagiel son of Ocran.
From Gad: Eliasaph son of Deuel.
From Naphtali: Ahira son of Enan.
These men were appointed leaders of their tribes, each the head of his ancestral clan.
So Moses and Aaron gathered them, and on the first day of the second month the whole assembly was called together. The people declared their lineage, clan by clan and family by family, and every man twenty years old and above was recorded by name, as the LORD commanded Moses.
Thus they were counted in the wilderness of Sinai:
From Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: 46,500.
From Simeon: 59,300.
From Gad: 45,650.
From Judah: 74,600.
From Issachar: 54,400.
From Zebulun: 57,400.
From Ephraim: 40,500.
From Manasseh: 32,200.
From Benjamin: 35,400.
From Dan: 62,700.
From Asher: 41,500.
From Naphtali: 53,400.
These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron with the twelve leaders of Israel. The total number of the men of Israel, twenty years old and above, able to serve in the army, was 603,550.
But the tribe of Levi was not numbered among them. For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying:
"Do not include the tribe of Levi in the census of Israel. Instead, appoint them over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, its furnishings, and everything that belongs to it. They shall carry the Tabernacle, set it up, and camp around it. Whenever it is to move, they shall take it down; and whenever it is to be raised, they shall establish it. Anyone who comes near it unlawfully shall be put to death. The Israelites shall encamp by their divisions, each under his own banner, but the Levites shall camp around the Tabernacle so that My wrath does not fall on the whole congregation. They shall guard the Tabernacle of the Testimony."
And the children of Israel did all that the LORD commanded Moses.
