Chapter 2 - chapter 2

Rhys stood at the edge of the training grounds, the biting mountain wind doing little to stir the grim set of his features. Below, his pack warriors moved with a precision born of endless drills, their bodies lean and powerful, their movements reflecting the harsh, unforgiving landscape of the Stonehaven territory. He watched them, not with pride, but with a perpetual, almost weary sense of responsibility. Every one of them was his to protect. Every life, every future, weighed heavily on his broad shoulders.

He was Alpha Rhys, leader of the formidable Stonehaven Pack. His name alone brought silence to rival territories, a testament to his strength, his strategy, and his unyielding will. But few saw the man beneath the Alpha, the one haunted by shadows.

"The scouting reports from the southern border are consistent, Alpha," Gareth, his Beta, rumbled, stepping up beside him. Gareth was a rock, loyal and perceptive, one of the few who understood the silent battles Rhys fought. "The rogue activity is increasing. More coordinated than usual."

Rhys grunted, his gaze sweeping the horizon, piercing the distant treeline as if he could see the threat himself. "They're testing us. Looking for weakness."

"And they won't find it," Gareth affirmed, his tone firm.

Rhys's jaw clenched. "No. Not while I draw breath." His mind, sharp and tactical, was already sifting through strategies, calculating risks. There was no room for error, no space for sentiment. That lesson had been carved into his very soul years ago, etched in blood and betrayal.

He still remembered the day with a clarity that stung. The infiltration. The lies that had almost cost them everything, injuring his own father and nearly bringing their pack to its knees. The face of the female wolf responsible, imprinted on his memory like a brand. Her striking, almost ethereal features, so rare and distinct. He'd vowed then that such a threat would never touch Stonehaven again. He'd become Alpha, carrying the burden of that oath, building walls not just around his territory, but around his heart.

He often wondered if the Moon Goddess was cruel, pairing Alphas with mates who might soften their resolve, who might distract them from their duties. He'd seen it happen, Alphas compromised by love, making decisions with their hearts instead of their minds. He couldn't afford that luxury. His pack demanded an Alpha forged in fire, unburdened by attachments that could be exploited.

"The Harmony Feast approaches," Gareth said, his voice dropping slightly, acknowledging the shift in topic. It was the annual gathering, a time of fragile alliances and, for many, the discovery of their fated mates.

Rhys felt a faint flicker of something primal deep within him, a wolf's instinct that usually remained dormant. He pushed it down, hard. "I will attend. For the alliances. Nothing more." He had no patience for the romantic notions of mate bonds. They were a weakness, a vulnerability that a leader simply couldn't afford. Not when the ghosts of past betrayals still whispered on the wind, forever warning him to protect his pack, no matter the cost to himself. He had learned his lesson. He would not allow a mate, fated or otherwise, to compromise his duty.
