Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 – Fractures and Frequencies

The common hall stank of iron, sweat, and something sharper.

Resonance drag, they called it—a symptom of multi-field exposure. After yesterday's trial, even the air around the First Chorus buzzed faintly like a song stuck inside cracked stone.

Kai rubbed the burn mark on his bicep where his fire had flared wild.

"I didn't overload it," he muttered.

Across from him, Jian didn't look up from the sharpening stone gliding down the spine of his blade. "Nobody said you did."

Sarika sat cross-legged on the far bench, clouds twining above her like impatient birds. "But it shifted. The resonance field. The grid wasn't supposed to destabilize unless…"

"Unless someone touched something buried," Amara finished flatly, her calligraphy brush swaying mid-air, leaving a trail of glowing script that never quite solidified.

Nandi, to Kai's right, tried to adjust the rhythm stone embedded in her palm brace, but it pulsed off-beat. Her stutter had worsened since the trial—not from fear, but from interference. She clutched the brace and closed her eyes.

Kai stood.

"Look, whatever happened, it wasn't me. The whole platform is a corpse. There's a dead portal under us. One flicker and—"

"I saw something," Izel said suddenly.

Everyone turned.

She sat near the window, eyes half-glazed, a glyph-seal burning faintly on the inside of her wrist.

"I don't know if it was memory or… echo drift. But when you surged, Kai, something pulled at me. Old. Familiar. But not mine."

Jian frowned. "What do you mean, not yours?"

"I mean it knew my name. But didn't speak it in this voice."

A silence settled over them.

Sarika exhaled rain-mist. "We're supposed to be a chorus. But right now, we're just noise."

Kaiden Wildfire entered with a hum—deliberate, too casual.

"Glad to hear you're at each other's throats. It means you're awake."

He tossed a datapad onto the table. Its screen read:

ACCELERATED TRIAL 02

First Chorus. Format: Echo Fusion Relay.

Location: Vault Five—beneath the Severed Spire.

Kai blinked. "That place is unstable."

Kaiden smiled. "So are you."

Before he turned to leave, he added—too softly—

"Portals don't open to weakness. But they respond to chaos."

Then he was gone.

And the hum in the walls?

It hadn't started until they argued.
