Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Fractured Mind

📍Scene 1: The Weight of the Silence

The air inside the room was heavy, smelling faintly of metallic iron and burnt ash. Kartik stood frozen in front of the mirror, his breath trapped in his throat.

"How was the food, Kartik? I made it with my own hands... for you and me."

Tanvi's voice didn't just linger in the room; it felt like it was echoing from inside his own skull. His hands began to tremble violently. He looked down at his palms, then back at the reflection. Tanvi was standing right behind him in the glass, her pale fingers resting lightly on his shoulders, though when he turned around frantically, there was no one there.

Only emptiness. Only the shadows mocking his sanity.

A deep, crushing pain erupted behind his temples. It wasn't just a headache—it felt like his mind was splintering into a thousand jagged pieces. He remembered the spicy chicken Siya had forced him to eat at the cafĂ©. A wave of intense nausea hit him. Was it poison? Or was it just the sheer horror of realizing that Siya and Tanvi weren't two separate people in this game? They were mirrors of the same twisted soul.

"Stop it... please, just leave me alone!" Kartik cried out into the empty room, his voice cracking with pure trauma and exhaustion.

No response. Just the slow, rhythmic dripping of a faucet somewhere down the hall. Drip. Drip. Drip. Every drop felt like a hammer striking his exposed nerves.

📍Scene 2: The Spiral of Guilt

Hours blurred into a nightmarish haze. Kartik couldn't tell if he was awake or trapped in a waking coma. Memories of his past with Tanvi flashed violently before his eyes—not the romantic moments, but the screams, the possessive glares, the way she used to grip his wrists so tightly that the skin would bruise.

He fell to his knees on the cold floor. He clutched his chest where his heart hammered wildly against his ribs.

"I've been alone since I was seven."

Her words from that previous confrontation echoed back to him. For the first time, beneath the overwhelming terror and the madness, a sharp spike of empathetic pain pierced his heart. He realized the horrifying truth: Tanvi didn't know how to love because love had always been a weapon used against her. She was a broken child trapped in a monster's body, and she had latched onto him as her only anchor in a world that had abandoned her.

And in trying to push her away, he had only dragged them both deeper into the abyss.

"I didn't mean to break you..." Kartik whispered to the dark room, tears burning hot against his cheeks. "But you're destroying me."

Suddenly, the lights flickered violently and died. Total, suffocating darkness swallowed the room.

📍Scene 3: The Crimson Letter

In the pitch black, a faint scratching sound came from beneath the bedroom door.

Kartik crawled across the floor, his muscles aching as if he had run miles. His trembling fingers brushed against something paper-thin slid through the crack. He pulled it close to his chest and dragged himself toward the faint glow of the streetlights bleeding through the window.

It was another note, written in that familiar, chaotic handwriting—smeared with something dark and wet.

"You feel it now, don't you? The bleeding inside your chest."

"You thought you could walk away, Kartik. You thought a café meeting with Siya could save you."

"Siya is just my shadow. And you... you are the body that gives us life."

"We are bleeding out together. And soon, there won't be anything left to save."

Kartik stared at the words until the letters blurred into pools of black and red. The psychological torture was complete. He didn't have the strength to fight anymore. The fight had been beaten out of him by days of sleeplessness, terror, and the suffocating realization that he was no longer an individual. He was a prisoner in a story written entirely in blood.

📍Scene 4: The Final Descent

Standing up on shaking legs, Kartik walked toward the mirror one last time.

The moonlight cut sharply across the glass. He didn't see his own face clearly anymore. All he saw was the pale, ghostly outline of Tanvi standing right behind him, her arms wrapping around his waist, her chin resting gently on his shoulder.

This time, he didn't pull away.

He raised his hand and gently touched her fingers in the reflection. They felt cold—ice-cold—yet strangely real.

Tanvi's whisper brushed against his ear, soft as a dying breath:

"There is nowhere left to run, my love..."

"Tomorrow, the story ends."

Kartik closed his eyes. A single tear slipped down his cheek, blending into the cold glass. He didn't feel angry anymore. He only felt a hollow, numbing peace—the heavy surrender of a man who knew he was walking straight into the dark, never to return.
