Chapter 1 - One

"Perhaps, time' s definition of coal is the diamond."

- Khalil Gibran.

She woke up to the call of her husband. No greetings, no pleasantries exchanged! Just commands and acceptance. There was nothing on her face that gives away what she felt . After the call, she went to the guest room to tidy it up. He would be coming to the house with a woman he had just met at the club the week before. And, he wants the house to be cleaned, food made and her welcoming.

She started it like a job, except, she is not being paid for her services, and the man in question was her husband. After clearing the house of anything that could give away the fact that her husband brings women home with him, she concluded that she was done cleaning.

Perhaps, there should still be enough time for her to rest some more. As she laid down, her phone rang again. And who else would it be but her husband. It was as if he had sensors and cameras installed in the house so as not to give her any time to rest. He told her to go get the meal and everything else prepared. This she did with no complaints whatsoever. Immediately she finished, the key turned.

She changed roles to the maid immediately. The husband came back home with a blonde, with curves in the right places, maybe surgically improved. She welcomed them with a bright smile.

Happy for herself because she would be free from his wrath that night at least.

She accepted the taunts and jeers from her husband and his latest woman. She endured it till she was given the permission to leave before she could go to rest her weary body.

She could hear the thumping, the moans and the groans of her husband and the woman because of the weak soundproofing. She could hear the sweet words he told to the woman. She buried her head into the pillow, not wishing for the two actions to stop, but for the noise to stop. The noise finally stopped after a few hours. The quiet returned, leaving her to her own thoughts.

Morning came again. This time she woke feeling a little bit refreshed. No one was around. Just the silence and she.

After performing the chores and all, she sat to weep. She sat to mourn the death of an emotion that wasn't there in the first place. Her eyes, red and empty. Her little face scrunched up in anguish.

Another one of his ego- feeding schemes. That is what he wants and that is what he gets. He wants her to feel saddened about him cheating, and if she doesn't, he beats her until she is in serious pain.

After the act, she went back to her room, her silent corner. She took out her diary, marking the dates and noting down the things her husband had done to her.

Knowing fully well that she was going to be eighteen soon got her going. She would be able to leave the monster alone without having to be put up with any guardian. There will be no one taking advantage of her in the guise of taking care of her.

She knew fully well that she was not going to miss anything when she escapes from him, after all, he is the young master of the family her father sold her to so as to repay his debt. She might miss the roof on her head , though.

After deciding that no emotional connection was made , she began the countdown to her freedom.
