Chapter 19 - Kael And Irelith

A bright morning bathed Aezrith Academy. Sunlight streamed through the large classroom windows, dancing across the students' desks and scattered books. Today, there were no sounds of duels or shouts—only the soft scratch of pens on paper and the quiet sighs of students trying to grasp the advanced lesson on resonance magic theory.

At the front row, Kael sat upright. Beside him, Irelith's eyes were fixed on the magical board where Professor Arven explained the theory of how two spells could resonate—if their users shared a deep emotional bond.

"Resonance magic… is only possible when two individuals have mana waves that align emotionally," the professor explained, drawing colorful diagrams in the air.

Kael glanced sideways at Irelith. She looked calm, her silver hair flowing elegantly over her shoulders, her blue eyes focused entirely on the lecture. A small smile crept onto Kael's lips, unaware that his hand had begun sketching her face at the corner of his notebook.

Soon, the class bell chimed softly, signaling the end of the session.

"All right, you're free for the afternoon. But remember, the resonance assignment is due in three days," said Professor Arven as he closed his book.

As the students began to rise from their seats, Irelith turned to Kael, who was still staring at his paper.

"Hmm? What's that? Are you drawing something?" Irelith asked, tilting her head slightly.

Kael quickly shut his notebook.

"Ah, no! Just doodling… hehe."

Irelith chuckled softly and reached for Kael's hand.

"Come on. You're coming with me today."

"Eh? Where to?" Kael asked, but didn't resist as Irelith gently pulled him out of the classroom by the hand.

Crystal Garden – Afternoon

The sky was clear and bright that day. Irelith brought Kael to the Crystal Garden, a hidden spot in the southern part of the academy. The garden was filled with strange flowers that shimmered like crystals under the sunlight.

Kael was speechless. It was his first time seeing the place.

"This... is amazing," he whispered.

"I knew you'd like it," Irelith replied, then sat on a stone bench beneath a tree whose leaves shimmered silver in the light.

Kael sat beside her. For a while, no words were exchanged. Only the gentle breeze rustling the leaves and the sweet scent of flowers filled the air.

"You know, Kael," Irelith said softly, "I... rarely do things like this. Just sitting still, spending time with someone."

Kael turned to her. "Do you mean... this is a date?"

Irelith blushed. "Maybe. If you don't mind... then yes, let's call it that."

Kael chuckled lightly, then said, "In that case... this is the best date of my life."

Irelith quickly looked at him, her eyes wide. "You're serious?"

"Very serious," Kael replied, his voice softer now. "Because the one sitting beside me is the only person who can make my heart race without using magic."

Irelith fell silent. Her cheeks flushed bright red.

Suddenly, the wind seemed to pause. The world grew quiet. All that remained was the sound of their hearts.

Thump... thump... thump...

Kael gently touched Irelith's hand—not gripping, just barely touching, as if afraid to shatter the moment.

"Irelith... when I was at the brink of defeat in the last exam, all I could think about was you."

Irelith bit her lip.

"Kael... I'm scared."

"Scared?"

"Scared that all of this is just... part of a duty, of a political arrangement between our families. But when I'm with you... I forget all that. I just want to be... an ordinary girl. Who... likes you."

Kael leaned in slightly, looking into her eyes.

"Forget all that. Here... there's only the two of us. Kael and Irelith. Not political fiancés. Not heirs of noble houses. Just two people... learning how to fall in love."

Irelith couldn't hold back her tears—but they weren't sad tears. They were tears of relief. And happiness. So much happiness.

Kael then picked a crystal flower from the grass and tucked it into her hair.

"Now you look even more beautiful," he whispered.

Irelith covered her face with both hands.

"Stop... You're making me melt, Kael."

Kael only laughed, then gently kissed the back of her hand.

They fell silent, letting their feelings flow in a stillness filled with meaning.

As Sunset Draws Near

As the sun began to set, the sky turned golden and red. Irelith leaned on Kael's shoulder, and Kael let her rest there, unmoving.

"I wish days like this could last forever," Irelith whispered.

"They can. As long as we stay together," Kael replied.

They gazed at the sky together, and among the uncertain haze of the future, one thing became clear—their feelings were no longer just an arranged engagement. It was something real, something warm... something growing stronger every day.

When the Night Invites Us to Speak

Night slowly descended upon Aezrith Academy. Magic lanterns flickered to life one by one along the stone paths that connected the gardens and dormitories. The sounds of nature calmed the air—enchanted crickets singing softly, and the night breeze carrying the faint scent of flowers from the Crystal Garden.

Kael sat on the balcony of his room, still in his slightly rumpled academy uniform. In his hand was a cup of warm tea, untouched. His gaze lingered on the starlit sky above.

His heart was still warm.

A gentle knock tapped on the door.

"Kael?" Irelith's soft voice came from the other side.

Kael stood up quickly and opened it.

"Irelith? You're still awake?"

Irelith gave him a slight smile, holding a small paper bag in her hands.

"I brought some cake from the cafeteria. They say it helps people think clearly about their future."

Kael chuckled.

"Come in."

Irelith stepped in and joined him on the balcony. They sat side by side, and the world around them seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them and the vast sky above.

Moments passed in comfortable silence.

Then Irelith spoke, "Kael... after we graduate, what do you want to be?"

Kael turned to her, a little surprised.

"Hmm... that's a good question. I haven't thought about it seriously, honestly. But... maybe I'd want to do something that lets me protect the people important to me. Whether that's becoming a knight, or a regional leader... or maybe even a magic instructor. Who knows."

Irelith smiled.

"You sound like someone... very mature."

Kael tilted his head.

"What about you?"

Irelith looked up at the sky.

"I... used to only think about becoming stronger than anyone else. But now... I think I just want to live in a peaceful world. One without political schemes or bloody battles. Maybe in a big house by the lake, full of flowers. With someone I love."

Kael turned slowly toward her, his expression serious.

"Could that person... be me?"

Irelith was quiet. Then, slowly, she nodded.

"If his name is Kael Rynthier... then yes, I think he could."

Kael smiled—not a shy or nervous smile, but one full of conviction.

"I'll do my best to make that future real. A house by the lake. With you. And without the burdens of the world."

Irelith blushed. She opened the paper bag and took out a small piece of cake, offering it to Kael.

"Then you'll have to start with the little things. Eat this first."

Kael took a bite of the cake, trying not to laugh.

"Yes, future Lady Rynthier."

"Huh?!" Irelith stared at him wide-eyed. "What did you just call me?!"

Kael looked at her without blinking.

"Lady Rynthier. Isn't that the name you'll be using one day?"

Irelith turned red to her ears. "Don't just say things like that—!"

Kael gently pinched her cheek.

"If you don't mind... I want that future to be more than just a dream."

Irelith lowered her head, then replied in a quiet voice,

"So do I."

The night deepened. The stars continued to shine brightly. And on that small balcony, two young souls began to write their own destiny—with soft laughter, simple hopes, and feelings too deep to be described in ordinary words.

> Later that night, before falling asleep, Kael wrote a single sentence in his notebook:

"I don't want to be with her just for now—but for tomorrow, and all the days that follow."
