Chapter 4 - Back Home, and Going to Hel...I mean School

I sat with my parents in this doctors office for the next what felt like a hour but only ended up being 20 minutes. They talked about alot of paperwork for the government, and quirk laws. Apparently because my body produces a hazardous substance the government has to be aware of it in case of both accidents involving me, and quirk mishaps. The good thing was that my parents also would get a bit of extra money from the government to help with stuff that could be needed to keep me and the people around me safe.

Once they got all the papers needed to start the process from the secretary in the hospital we started walking out together. My mother was still holding my hand, she had taken a couple glances at me from time to time. Probably making sure I was still okay. Not that I could ask her why. As we reached the car, and we all got in my father spoke.

"Kara, we know this will be difficult for the next couple of years. But know we will try our best to help. But we won't be able to help if you never tell us." He says in a calm, tired, and soft tone. He then continues. "Now saying that, we all will need to learn a way for us to communicate, based off what the doctor explained you won't be able to speak again. So we are going to be learning JSL or japenese sign langauge together. And i will need to you practice your writing even more. I know that your ahead for your age already but. Most people don't know jsl, and i have my doubts most teachers know it either." He finishes.

I nod at his words showing my understanding. And watch them both carefully. Before my mother spoke up.

"We managed to get the next 2 weeks off paid because of the medical emergency, so we are going to postpone you going into school until we learn JSL, and your writing is good enough to atleast respond to questions" my mother says in a similar tone to my father.

I nod once again, and the car is silent once again. My father starts driving slowly, the buildings and people going by our windows in blurs. It wasnt tense per say, more awkward. Which was expected as any conversation would have to ignore my presence or default to yes or no questions.

After a another few minutes of this awkward silence did one of my parents break it.

"Did the hospital staff treat you well?" My mother asks to me concerned.

I tilt my head in response, while yes, they didnt hurt me. And they did their jobs. The doctor was rude, and the nurse was too scared or disgusted by my presence to really do anything, so I nod, then add in a so so gesture with my hand.

My mother gave a confused, and also concerned look. Clearly not understanding. She then spoke quietly.

"What does that mean? Did they do something bad or harmful to you?" She asked concerned

I tilt my head the other way, also not fully getting why she was confused. While gestures could show some meaning and sometimes emotion; the facial expression did much more work to give context to the gestures. Thus why she was confused. I then respond to her by shaking my head. Then i tap where my mouth would be if I had one.

My mother stares at me for a minute, trying to comprehend what I ment. After a few seconds she hesitating spoke.

"So they didn't hurt you; but they said something that you didn't like or was offensive or rude?" She asks to see if thats what i ment.

I nod my head in conformation. My mom concern fades a bit, then goes to speak.

"Oh that's good, but what did they say to you sweetie?" She speaks but then pauses, remembering the important detail of my inability to speak at the moment and continues. "Well, if your not hurt, and are okay we can wait till we get home then you can write what they said." She says in a more confident tone.

I for the third time, I nod in confirmation. And go back to staring out the window.

2 weeks later...

The last two weeks had been surprisingly fun. It was decided that I wouldnt go to school until I learned to write well enough for teachers to understand, and the same was the requirement for JSL. While doing further writing and kanji practice was a little boring, my parents atleast tried to make it more fun. And the same was true for learning sign.

I was currently just sitting on my bed, contemplating on what to do. It was determined yesterday that my writing and sign was good enough to start school. Now, sure you may think why are you even worried about going to school. And the answer was simple, children were pretty cruel when it came to differences, and normally that isn't a bad thing as I have no interest in making friends with children. Where it becomes a issue is being mute and different. It makes it really difficult to control how many people attempt to start messing with me, which would be inconvenient.

I sigh mentally and think to myself.

'Well inconveniences aside, atleast I have had some time to test out some theories'

I look down at my hand, and focus forming a small tendril of void. Before it slowly falls apart, and i retake in the void.

My control over it was terrible, however the fact I could control it even alittle gave me alot of hope for actually having combat potential. Which was very important for some future plans of mine. I was ploting to become a hero, not only because who wouldn't want to be a hero and save people. But also for the money, and influence it could provide. I wasnt clueless, I knew I would be a nightmare to hire in any professional or well paying job. Anyone that was a literal biohazard would be quite hard to handle in a fair way.

The next thing I try to do well just sitting waiting for dinner was to draw out..my shade? Draw out myself? I really have to figure out if I am truely the shade.

I close my 'eyes' which just ment i stopped taking in any visual stimulus. Weirdly enough It felt like closing my eyes, even if logically I knew I didn't have such organs.

I try and feel inside my shell. For a while I didn't feel anything other then the distance feeling of my blankets. Suddenly after focusing intensely on my chest I felt some kind of liquid? Energy? It was hard to describe. I focus on pulling it outwards, and i suddenly am looking at my shell from a outside prospective. I mentally blink a few times before attempting to shout in joy. And to both my delight, and shock, I make a sound.

It wasnt anything like speech, or a animalistic sound. No, it was the same kind of sounds the shades made in the game. The whispy noises. With the discovery that yes, I could make sound. And that I could leave my shell, my hope rose even higher. Because not only does that mean that unless my entire being gets vaporized, I could technically surive any physical destruction of my vessel. Not only that, I can likely learn to control the small noises I make to create a sudo language.

With these happy thoughts I float back to my now limp vessel and attempt to go back into it. Which turned out to be very easy, as soon as I touched it I got pulled back in.

Looking around slowly now back in my vessel, I get up and go find my parents to eat dinner.

The next day at school.

When I walk in, I immediately feel the eyes of most of the other children on me.

'Thats right you vultures i am back.' I think to myself, and snort mentally at my overdramatic thoughts.

The teachers had already been informed of my current status and quirk. Which was fine by me. My teacher calls me up to the front of the hoard of children, and i oblige. Once standing infront of the kids the teacher speaks, her voice soft, and almost melodic.

"Hello kids, if you would give me your attention for a little before we continue with playtime. As you all can see, Kara is back, now she looks very different now, and that is because she got her quirk. Its called Vessel. It changed her body so it could house her quirk, unfortunately due to these changes she cannot speak, so don't treat her harshly or accuse her of being mean for not speaking back to all of you." She says to the little hoard of kids.
