Come on Ruby just a little further this way." said a girl with purple eyes and long blonde hair tied in pigtails. Wearing a tan blouse wrapped with a belt around the waist along with black pants and wearing brown loose boots.
"Urgh, you said that like an hour ago Yang." a short girl complained to her sister, having silver eyes and short black hair with red tips at the end. She wore a white long sleeve shirt adorned with a red hooded cape, as well as a black skirt with white leggings and black slippers. They were both walking through a forest not far from their home.
"Ruby that was just twenty minutes ago, so stop nagging" Yang retorted back, as she grabbed her sister's wrist, having her keep up her pace with her. "But we been walking for forever and I don't know what 'this way' is" she said while trying to free herself from Yang's strong grip.
"if I told you, will you be willing to go freely" Ruby looks at her nodding with a smile, yang gives in and sighs "Ok, when I was just exploring around, I came across an awesome place filled with cool stuff and it had a house there" yang tells enough trying to sell her sister with the idea.
"Yang is it a junkyard" she deadpanned, looking at her with disinterest. "No, there's weapons there, Ruby", the red caped girl eyes gleamed with excitement with a growing smile. "Then what are we waiting for let go see it "she took off, trying to drag her sister, only for Yang to pull her back getting her attention. Ruby turns to see Yang with a smug smile
"what ?" ruby asked
"Do you know where it is?" Yang asked, as Ruby embarrassedly pouted, looking down at the ground. "No" responding in a meek tone. After walking for a while, Yang came to a stop in front of some foliage, turning back to her sister.
" Are you ready?" ruby nodded beaming with excitement, yang then grabbed hold of some bushes and moved them. "WOW" ruby exclaimed for the reveal. It was in a large clearing, with an assortment of what seems to be training equipment, there was a training dummy made of straw and a poorly repaired potato sack with stitches and small gashes, with the trees there are two massive log close together hanged by rope, both ends of the logs are shaved into a cone. At the far end there is a green canopy tent with tarps covering the sides with sets of armor in different shapes and sizes just in front of the doorway, also near the tree line there are various weapons leaned against a misshaped weapons rack. Ruby marveled at the sight before a thought came to her mind.
"Who built it?" ruby asked, looking toward her sister
"I don't know and I don't care, now come on let go explore it" she said nonchalantly making her way to the tent, "wait I thought that you already explored it ?" Yang shook her head saying that she found it late at night. "Ok, but this is obviously someone's stuff. Wouldn't it be rude if we just snooped around." looking at ruby for a moment as yang thought of a response, soon her face lit up as she put her hand on her hips.
"Will if they didn't want people to find it then they should have done a better job hiding it" she said with confidence, Ruby with her child like logic accepts this "ok makes sense, now let's go." Both girls walked in the clearing, ruby immediately going to the weapons while yang walked up to the dummy giving it a few jabs, rocking it, before heading to the tent. She looks at the armor on the floor and notices that it is damaged and in poor condition. She enters the tent seeing a workshop table at the corner on it was a chest plate looking like it was being worked on. To the opposite side was an open sleeping bag with a step stool on the side and a roll of white wrapping tape. She looked around the tent until she found a small knife and a silver disc, she went to pick it up to see a black wolf on it. Outside with ruby she was still ogling at the weapon, seeing that there were mostly plain non-transformable weapons, she couldn't help but feel disappointed. As she's looking, she noticed that they were heavily damaged with scorch marks and burnt leather on the handle, then she came to the last weapon as she looked in awe.
It was a great sword, its narrowed blade was the only one unscathed with silver edges and a black fuller, the handle is wrapped with white tape as its pommel is octagonal with rivets along the side, with the cross guard looking like a simple metal brick with rivet on top and bottom. Ruby continues to look at it is thinking how cool it is to see it in action.
A FEW MINUTES AWAY
Not far from the training area, Guts is pulling a wagon full of random items, satisfied with his findings. Half the day was spent looking for material from the camp and orphanage, three months have passed since his arrival, and he spent most of his time training away from the orphanage as he did not want to be adopted.
Sometimes he goes to the center of Patch where the camp resides to gather materials and today he had a stroke of luck as he found a cartridge of dust undamaged by the fire and from the orphanage he "borrowed" a vacuum. His plan is to jury rigged where the vacuum will shoot out projectiles laced with dust at him, while he's parrying or dodging them. As he continues his way until he hears voices he quickly sets his wagon to the side and crouches down, he moves to the foliage peering from above he sees a little girl with black hair.
After assessing the situation Guts came to the conclusion that it was some random girl who stumbled on to his place, seeing that she was no threat, he took a deep breath and unsheathed his sword and propped on his shoulder as he walked up behind the girl, he gave a little cough getting the girl's attention. She swirls around, her eyes wide open upon meeting Guts eyes, he was about to speak only to be cut off by the little girls screaming catching him completely off guard. Before he tries to calm her down he is tackled down by a blonde girl with pigtails.
"GET AWAY FROM HER!!!" as she pinned him down she started punching him in the face, "RUBY RUN!!" she yell as she gives him her last punch, she gets up and takes her sisters wrist and starts running, leaving the boy on the ground with wide eyes
Guts was dumbfounded on what just happened, all he knows is that there was a girl screaming and another one that wailed on his face. He slowly sat up tasting the blood coming out of his busted lip, all he could say was "what the hell ?" His plan was to intimidate the little girl and ask her, why is she here? But he guessed that his scar, stoic expression and a sword at hand would scare anyone.
He grabbed the sword to help him get up, he looked at the direction that the girls ran then looking back at his stuff. He was about to forget the whole interaction until felt pain in the back of his neck and heard screaming, towards the same direction where the girls ran.
MOMENTS AGO
Yang and ruby were running away from their attacker, not stopping to look back "Ruby are you ok, did he hurt you?" The silver-eyed girl shook her head "no, but yang your hand it's..." she cringes at the sight, yang looks at where ruby is staring and sees her hand with blood. "It ok it not mine, anyway let's get ou-" she stopped as there was a hint of grim growling they both came to a halt, trying to pinpoint the noise. Yang brought ruby closer to her side as her herald was jerking side to side trying to find the grim, when she felt a tug from her blouse, yang looks down seeing ruby pointing shakenly, she gazes at the area where ruby pointing seeing a pair of furious red eyes.
The creature steps out revealing its an alpha beowolf, it has bones jetting out of its body acting as offense and defense. It approaches the two girls letting out a loud snarl, getting both of them to stream, resulting in ruby stumbling back, "Ruby get up!". The grim readies itself to pounce, yang puts herself in front the beowolf as she wraps herself onto Ruby, the beowolf finally lunges at them. Yang shuts her eyes and hugs ruby shielding her from it, She waited for her death, but then she hears rustling in the wood thinking it another grim she dared not to open their eyes.
"RRRRAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!" Both yang and ruby eyes shot open upon hearing a battle cry. Out of the bush is the boy with both hands on his sword charging at the grim, unleashing an upward slash making it stagger.
Guts lets out a grunt, gritting his teeth while taking a stance between the beowolf and the girls, with his sword in front of him gritting his teeth ready for its next move. The girls all the while are stunned at the boy facing a grim twice more his size, ruby is at awe at the sight, reminding her of the stories of brave huntsman that save lives, yang on the other hand is weary at the boy, noticing his fierce glare matching the grims, She didn't thinks it possible but here he is, facing a alpha beowolf on top of that.
The beowolf let out a snarling roar picking up on Guts "gift" charging at him, Guts without hesitation charging it as well. Guts spined into a side step trying to decapitate it from the side, only to have the grim deflect the blade and unleash a fury of claw swipes. The black eye boy jumps back avoiding the attack as the grim lunges at Guts bring up his sword across him as he's being pinned down, with its claws on the blade it comes for a bite to guts head. He steers the blade above him and makes it bite into it as they both try to push each other, the grim promptly lifts itself along with gut whose cling on to the sword, as it throws gut to a tree make him hit his side. Guts grunted in pain, as recovers he looks over where the grim is, his eyes widen when he sees it charging at him, he scurries to a running start and drops to slide down underneath the grim as he's coming out of the grim, he slice it hind leg on the way resulting it to crash into the tree.
Guts gets right back up and reverse grips his sword and jumps onto the beowolf, stabbing it through its back shoulder, he curses himself for not landing the killing blow.
The beowolf howls and starts bucking and reaching it back trying to claw at Guts. He hangs tight on his sword; however the sword slides off its back and the grim twist around and devastating knocks guts into the bushes. Yang and Ruby start to worry that the boy is dead and before the grim can continue its assault, Guts emerges from the bushes letting scream and plunge his sword into the grim. The grim arches it back and recoils in pain as Guts takes this opportunity and pulls his blade and stabs it under its chin and through its head.
The body falls back while guts is on it, he breathing in and out as he rolls off the body after a while he gets back up and goes over and pulls out his sword from the corpse as it's dissipating. He looks to the girls and walks over to them, as he does he stands before them staring at one and the other.
"..."

"..."
"... um ... are you two ok?" guts asked wanting to break the silence, the girls remained silent continuing to stare, "I said are you tw-"
"oh my god that was amazing how you were fighting you were like SLASH-SWING-O-CHA and then it was like RAWR-and-GRR, but the you were all RRAAHH-SHING." Ruby shrieked as she was acting out the whole fight with comical fighting moves, for the second time Guts found himself dumbfounded on the girl's attitude, it was not long ago where she was terrified by him and now is acting as though the fight with the grim did not happen
While Ruby was praising the boy, Yang took a good look at the boy. He was wearing a black sleeveless shirt, with dark brown pants and leather brown combat boots, with spurs? Looking at him further, she sees that he has short black spiky messy hair, pointed ears and a small scar that runs across his nose one thing that caught her off guard was his eyes, they were black, but with the pupils and iris being a different shade, still giving him a petrifying stare. She also notices his muscular frame giving him an older appearance, but she thinks that he's the same age as her. Overall despite his rough appearance she could say he was good looking, not that she would ever admit to him.
As Guts continues watching Ruby's exploit, he glances over to Yang who was looking at him, embarrassed she looked away and crossed her arms. Guts raised an eyebrow in confusion, not wanting to touch the subject he drops it, as he turns back to the silver eye girl who wrapping up her reenactment of the fight
"Anyways I'm Ruby Rose" she said reaching her hand out, offering a handshake, Guts a bit shocked, looks at the hand before reaching it. "My name is G-" Guts did not finish, as Yang stepped in, slapping his hand away and glared at him. Frankly Guts was getting tired of being cut off today. " Don't touch my sister" she says still upset about the previous incident
"Tch, Why? She wanted to shake hands" Guts said as he looked past her, looking at ruby. "It not a big deal Yang" ruby said meekly
"Not a big deal? He threatened us. You could have been hurt!" She exclaimed, pointing at Guts. He was getting annoyed.
"Well maybe I wouldn't have scared your sister if you had stayed away from my training spot" Guts snapped at yang
"and beside the only one that got hurt is me" he motions his hand to his bruises and busted lip. Yang, not able to think of a counter, stayed quiet.
"Whatever" she muttered, looking away from guts. Yang turns around and starts walking away. "Come on Ruby let's go home at about lunchtime anyways" Ruby follows, looking back at guts, before going off.
"Your welcome" he mutters as he turns back to the direction of his training spot as he puts his sword on his back he feels a wave of pain through his body. Dropping his sword, He falls on his knees and starts breathing in and out, clutching at where the pain resides. He sees that it is his ribs that are in pain, he figures that he might have broken ribs.
"Are you ok?" As a voice spoke up, he turned to see ruby who came back, as well as Yang though she adopted a scowling expression. "I think I broke some of my ribs.....i doubt I could make it back to patch like this" he said continuing his breathing, he looks to see ruby concern try to think of a way to help as for Yang her expression soften considerably
"Anyway we can help?" she asked, as Gut took a moment and think then looking at the brush.
"Over there by the brush there's a wagon, dump the stuff out and bring it here" he pointed to the direction of some vegetation, ruby and yang nodded, as Ruby dashed to retreat the wagon. After she returns, she motions Guts to the cart.
"get in" wincing a little he pushes himself up, seeing that he is in pain ruby moves quickly to support him, acting like a crutch. Guts tries not to put all of his weight on the little girl, Yang hesitated comes to help him to the wagon. As they lay him on the wagon, ruby grabs hold of the handle and pulls the wagon, seeing that she did not need help yang let her be, as she looks down and sees his sword. She goes to pick it up but was surprised it was heavier than it looked, so the best she could do is drag the blade behind her.
She jogged to catch up with ruby, she took a second look at the sword and saw that it was a real sword layered with dent, scuffed mark and chipped edge. they stayed silent for a while until Ruby realized something.
"oh, I forgot, we didn't catch your name", Guts looks over to the two girls, trying to muster the strength to speak.
"(PANT)-Guts, my name is Guts" Ruby turns her head back with a bewildered look. "Guts? Your name is Guts?" she asked for confirmation, as yang not looking away from the path mouths off Guts name questionably with a cocked eyebrow.
"Yes, that's the name I have been given and I have no interest in changing it" he said hoping to close the topic, honestly if he wanted his name changed, he would have done it sooner. Seeing that he was serious they decide not to push it, as the continue yang thinks up of a question, "hey why are you out here on your own and why do you have a real sword"
"..."
"Hey"
"..."
"HEY! I'm asking you a question"
"..."
Furiously she turns to guts, "hey are you ignoring-" she stops and sees that he's slumped over and asleep. Ruby glances behind her and looks back at the road "He probably passed out, that grim did hit him pretty hard" she concluded as she sped up her pace a little. Yang stares at him, thinking back at the fight, wondering how he is able to take on an alpha beowolf and beat it ,as she looks at the sword and thinks back at what he said about his training spot. She looks forward to the path, wondering how long he has been training and how strong he is.

After walking for a while, Yang realized where they were heading "Ruby, why did we bring him here?" she gesture at their house, a two-story tall log cabin in a large clearing surrounded by the woods. "I thought we were taking him to the hospital"
Ruby comically narrowed her eyes and pointed at Guts, still passed out. "Do you think we would leave him with those monsters, with their cold hands and tools of torture" Yang deadpanned at the whole display, she should have realized that ruby would do this. They hear grunting from behind them and look to see Guts waking up, he blinks a few times as he looks at his surroundings.
"GRUH-I thought you were taking me to the hospital-Gah!" he groaned as he sits up then lays back down realizing the pain he's in.
"No way we cant leave you to does evil people they lure you in with sweet and then when you least expect it they stick you with a needle" she exclaimed as Guts looks to Yang with a raised eyebrow, questioning if she's serious.
Yang shrugged "you have no idea", as Guts let out an exhausted sigh.
"ok but why bring me here ruby."
"Oh, well dad has a first aid kit and he could treat him" she said without any worry, as come over to guts with her hand out.
"come on let's go" Guts gets up painfully as he almost fell off the wagon, if it wasn't for ruby to catch him, seeing that she was struggling to support him, Yang comes over and take his arm around her shoulder. Guts was surprised by her willingness to help him, as she tried to avoid him. Ruby fixed herself and followed the same as Yang, as they both then led Guts inside the house.
When they enter the house, Guts sees a blonde man sitting on the couch watching the television, "hi girls food on the table if you're hungry" he said, not looking away from the tv.
"Hi dad, listen this boy is really hurt so we were wondering if you can help him" ruby said with a smile, Ruby's father looks away from the tv and sees that the boy is all bloody and bruised on the face, with his blood being dry by now. He turns off the TV and looks toward his youngest.
"Ruby, why didn't you take him to the hospital?" he said, half-knowing the expected answer she'll give.
"Dad, I'm not cruel to leave him with those doctors" before she could go into another rant her father cut in, "ok... Just place him by the table over there "he motions as he gets up and leaves the room.
The girls walk Guts to the table, sitting him on a chair. As he waits, their father returns with a first aid kit as he sits in front of guts to treat him. Guts sees that he's a well-built man in his late twenties, has messy blonde hair and purple eyes like his daughter's. He wears a light brown suit vest and brown cargo vest, with light brown cargo pants and gray slides. he also had some notable feature such as, he has a orange bandana on his arm and leather arm guard on the other, on the same arm he brands a stylized heart tattoo and a silver Pauldron . From the looks of him he's a brawler, probably something that Yang picked up after him.
As the older brawler prepares to treat Guts, he fixes his gaze to his daughters. "So mind telling me what happened here" he points his thumb at guts, as he plans to get the story from him later, but wants to hear the girl's side first.
Guts decides best to stay quiet; he doesn't want to provoke the man in front of him especially when the girls will explain their side of the story, but luckily Ruby was eager to answer.
"So yang found a cool place that turned out to be a training spot and took me there to explore that when later he showed up" she pointed at Guts who was cleaning the dirt and blood off of his face.
"It turns out that it is rude for someone to snoop around, so he confronted me with his sword at hand" she then points at the sword, still in Yang's hand. Her father then looks at Guts, who was listening to the conversation with a neutral expression, he will not deny that she was telling the truth so far, though it benefited for more detail.
He looked back at her to continue, "and I screamed and Yang came over and punched him then we ran away until a scary grim showed up, he came and rescued us and stabbed it with his sword...Oh, and he got knocked into a tree." she finish in rapid succession clearly out of breath
He nodded and understood most of what she said and turned to Guts " you killed a grim?" He said very impressed that a kid is able to do so.
"Yes but it got a good hit on me" Guts said, removing the scabbard and lifting his shirt. The girls and their father saw the bruise on his ribs, but the longer they looked they noticed that he had some scarring on him. He focused on the task at hand and looked to Guts.
"ok this is what will happen I'll treat your injuries and you tell me what happened, Ok?" guts nodded as the blonde man starts to look through his first aid kit
"Ok first question: did you hurt my girls?" he said as he stared at the boy. Guts not fazed, looks at him with a black expression "NO." he looks back at the girls for confirmation.
"Is he telling the truth?
"yep, he didn't lay a hand on us, he just was very mean looking and dangerous, but that didn't stop Yang from punching him a lot" she said with a smile as Yang fixed a glare at her. Satisfied he turns back to Guts
"Alright second question: why did you threaten them?"
"They intrude to my training area and I figured they were looting" the older man looked to the girls asking if it was true
"well yang told me if they didn't want it to be found that they should have done a better job hiding it" ruby said unaware that she was throwing her sister under the bus, as her father looks at yang with a disapproval glare, while she looked away sheepish.
"Ok last question... Why did you save my daughter's life?" Guts remained silent not because the question threw him off it but because he was wondering that himself. He looked at the girls and thought what would have happened if he did nothing as a thought came to his head.
" that kind of a dumb question to ask but, I didn't want there death to be in my conscious, I don't like the idea of seeing them dead" he said
You realized you could have died as well?" he said with a raised eyebrow but actually he was impressed by the boy's bravery. "Better me than them." Guts said not hesitating, the blonde man couldn't help but smile.
"Hmph, well seeing how you saved my two girls, as a father I am here by pardoning you of any and all offense you committed on them" he said adopting a dramatic voice as Guts couldn't help looking at him funny.
"however you on the other hand" pointing at Yang "are grounded"
What? What did I do? She exclaimed angrily " you fooled your sister into a dangerous situation" he took a dramatic tone " and for that I hereby revoke you of your motorcycle magazines for the next month" he then crossed his arm as yang looked destroyed "but, but-"
"no but young lady now head to your room with your sister I want to talk to..." he pause upon realizing that he did not know the boy's name as he turn to him for his name. Guessing that the blonde hunter was at a blank he respond "guts"
"Gu-" he did a double take, looking at the boy strangely
"That really your name?" he asked not believing the boy
"Sigh, that's the name that I've been given and no I have no interest in changing it" Guts sighed knowing that this is his reaction. The blonde man blinks a few times before returning to his original statement "ok well... I want to talk to Guts in private" Yang grumbles and takes ruby with her, as the sound of her door shut loudly. The blonde takes a sigh and looks at Guts
"ha, um. sorry about that she's got a temper, I think she got that from her mother" he said laughing it off.
"In any case I didn't introduce myself. My name is Taiyang xiao long but you can call me tai" he said as he smiled, guts simply nodded , as tai returned in treating his ribs.
" so, do you have any parents? " He said bluntly he figures that Guts is pretty much a straightforward kid. As he waits for a response he begins treating Guts and sees that the scars are consistent with cuts and stab wounds. But what shook him to his core was some bullet wound he has especially one on his shoulder looking like a shotgun wound
"No I'm an orphan" guts said in a calm voice
"I see you live in the patch orphanage" he said snapping his thoughts on the scars
"Yes"
"How old are you?"
I'm seven years old. By next year I will be eight" he said, feeling like he's talking to the case worker.
" Listen guys I appreciate what you did for my daughter, not everyone would be willing to risk their lives'' Guts feels uncomfortable being praised.
"So how long have you been training?" Guts slightly flinches at the question " since-since three months ago gathering a bunch of items and made it my training area" Tai looks at him in disbelief as he could tell that the muscles that the boy has are a result of long training. That being said why is he training, he think how he taught yang how to fight but never as a main focus, however guts looks like to be training for a long time, he boils it down to guts past life is too painful to speak
"Is the orphanage fine with you doing this on your own"
"My foster mother is fine with me like this so as long I return before dark"
"Before dark? How long are you outside of the orphanage"
"Most of my free time if possible. I try to avoid being in the orphanage." Tai had a curious look on his face, as he wrapped bandages around Guts chest. "I like the orphanage but I reduce the chances in getting adopted, so I spend most of my time either collecting materials or keep training on my swordsmanship"
"Hmm I see, will I don't know how to respond to that" he said as he finished treating Guts. "Alright there you, I don't want to keep you waiting. You can leave now if you want to"
Guts nodded in acknowledgement as he put his shirt on and scabbard, as he buckled in his scabbard he looked around and saw something missing.
"Um sir, your daughter with the pigtail has taken my sword to her room."
"You can go get it I'll wait for you here" tai said as he turns on the tv
"Where is the room?"
"Its up the stairs and first room to your left" he said as the black eye boy nodded and goes fetch his blade
MEANWHILE AT RUBY AND YANG'S ROOM
"URGH, this is his fault I lost valuable motorcycle info for a whole month" yang exclaimed, pacing through her room as ruby was sitting at the edge of the bottom of the bunk bed, trying to calm her down
"Yang"
"What?
"Why did you take Guts sword", she pointed at the sword where it was at the end of the bed, yang furrow her eye looking at the sword before getting into a calm expression, "i.....actually don't know. I think I took it without thinking"
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK
"Hey I think you took my sword to your room" Guts voiced behind the door, as ruby got up and opened the door "Hey Guts, what did my dad talk to you about." ruby asked curiously
"not much only about my life and thanking me in saving your life" he unconsciously feels his bandages as he looks at ruby then to yang "my sword please. '' Yang grabs the sword, dragging it and shoves it to Guts arm
" here, now leave" yang said not looking him in the eye. Guts slowly sheaths his sword trying not to cause more pain to himself.
"....thanks" he soothes his ribs as he looks over to yang. "...anyways I don't think I catch your name?" Guts said. "It's Yang xiao long, now leave !" taking the hint Guts backs away from the room and goes down stairs
Walking down stairs he sees Tai watching television, upon hearing him he looks to Guts "so how'd it go?" Gus simply lets out a breath. "I think she hate me" Tai couldn't help but chuckle a bit "no I don't think she hate you she probably embarrass that you saved her, give it some time and she'll come around" then an idea popped into his head "hey you know what about you come tomorrow for dinner?"
Guts was caught off guard by this as he never was invited to anything special. "...are you sure I don't want to be a bother" wanting to deny the invitation. " Come now you're no bother and beside it a proper way to thank you. Trust me, you like how ruby shows her gratitude and I guarantee that yang will cool off by then" tai finished with a smile, Guts thinks on what he said and realized that his daughters mean the world to him, so he feels the need to thank him.
"...Ok what time do I show up" Guts gives in as he sees no other reason not to come and sees that his "Gift" wont endanger anyone out here where they live
"Around 6 pm is fine"
"Alright I'll see myself out. See you tomorrow and thank you " he said making his way to the door, as he closed the door behind him, Tai smiled and went upstairs to the girls room. On his way he thinks how Summer would have done a better job at this, he sighs and as much as he missed her, his daughters need him now.
" hi girls " he announced as he entered the room, yang was lying on the bottom bunk and ruby was reading a weapons catalog. "So I've invited Guts tomorrow for dinner" Tai clapped his hands as to get their attention, ruby's eyes widened "does that mean-" "yes ruby we'll get the ingredients" Ruby squealed in excitement as she rushed out of the room.
"I go ahead and make a list" this lifts Yang and her father as he tries to think of something to say. "Don't worry dad, I don't hate him." she says "I'm just embarrassed that I beat him up and that he had to save us" Yang then mumble "Guts probably hates me"
