Chapter 9 - Obscurus

**Rumble!**

The dark blue behind him peeled away layer by layer, revealing Credence, head bowed. His tears dripped to the floor, splashing moisture onto the dusty ground.

"Credence, I should apologize to you." Graves never imagined that the Obscurus he desperately sought was the seemingly timid Credence. It would be incredibly difficult to appease this boy now!

"I trusted you so much!" Credence's expression was pure sorrow. The only person he trusted had only deceived and used him, making him feel that this world was a purgatory; it would be better if it were destroyed.

"You can control it!" Graves had a premonition of what was about to happen. He tried to persuade Credence.

"But I don't want to now, Mr. Graves!" Credence felt an enormous energy building inside him, wanting to destroy everything in its path.

His eyes suddenly turned snow-white, and his body trembled. Jet-black smoke burst from within him, instantly engulfing the house. Graves immediately cast a defensive spell.

But Credence's target wasn't him. This completely unleashed Obscurus ripped through the wall and ascended rapidly into the sky. The buildings it grazed during its ascent were shattered, leaving wreckage in its wake.

At that moment, August and Newt arrived on the rooftop, sensing the oppressive, violent magic in the distance, and knew something was terribly wrong.

August knew that the Salem boy, Credence, was about to implode.

The dark power of an Obscurus emerges when young wizards suppress their magic for too long. Normally, Obscurials possessed by an Obscurus rarely live beyond ten years, but Credence was the exception. For unknown reasons, he miraculously survived, and the Obscurus inside him grew larger and larger due to his prolonged abuse.

"Stop him!" Tina also felt this ominous power. Such unrestrained power would undoubtedly destroy the city if fully unleashed.

Just as they were about to act, they saw a column of black smoke rise into the sky, tearing through the building they were on, almost splitting it in half.

"No! I want to help him!" As soon as Newt saw this, he knew something terrible had happened to make the Obscurial decide to stop suppressing itself and finally break free.

On one occasion, during his travels, he tried to save a young Obscurial, attempting to separate the Obscurus from her, but he failed. The girl didn't survive, but Newt was left with the Obscurus.

That was his most heartbreaking moment. Now, another tormented person appeared before him, and he wanted to try and change the unfortunate outcome that was about to happen.

"Someone's chasing him!" August pointed to Graves behind them.

"It's the Head of Security!"

"Graves will kill him!"

Tina immediately appeared, pulling August to the ground with her.

The Obscurus was wreaking havoc on the street, which was filled with wrecked vehicles and burning buildings.

"You are a miracle!" Graves, with an ambitious smile, wanted to conquer this unleashed Obscurus. However, his voice clearly enraged it, and a cloud of black smoke, like a sharp spear, lunged at him, but he, having prepared, dodged it.

"We can—"

"[Magic Cut]!"

Graves' heart skipped a beat, and he immediately Apparated to the side.

Upon reappearing, he touched his cheek, where he had a fresh, red wound. He smiled: "This is a premonition, but who are you?"

"Don't worry, I'm just a passerby." August startled Graves, but he didn't believe Graves would be so easily dealt with. He knew Graves' true identity was Grindelwald.

Grindelwald likely wouldn't want to reveal his true identity just yet, so he probably wouldn't use unconventional dark magic. Besides, with August's [Spell Deflection Shield] and the newly learned [Protego], self-preservation shouldn't be an issue.

So, August wanted to test his combat power. Mr. Mardo had described him as an exceptional genius, capable of accumulating a considerable amount of magic for an apprentice in two years. Apprentices with such a quantity of magic could even opt for advancement.

But Mardo advised him to wait a bit longer, to thoroughly learn all the available knowledge at the apprentice stage, which would greatly help his chances of successful advancement.

In his own world, August had no one to train with. With few friends, he could only rely on the incessant practice of his combat spells.

Now was the time to test the results of his efforts during this period.

August held a short staff, which he had snatched from Narlak during the chaos. Of course, he wasn't casting spells with a wand; he was trying to see if he could trick the *Dark Wizard*.

"What was that spell?" The *Dark Wizard* was, indeed, the *Dark Wizard*. With the Obscurus surrounding them, he was in no hurry and could calmly chat with August at that moment.

He had never seen that spell. Despite being an exceptional scholar in the magical world, with experience in a vast number of spells, only a handful of people, including his inexplicably intimate friend Dumbledore, had a comparable catalog of study.

He was sure Dumbledore had never seen that spell. Suddenly, he became interested in the young man before him. The Obscurus was right there, and he didn't believe the useless Aurors of the Magical Congress could deal with such a powerful Obscurus.

"Would you believe me if I told you I just picked it up?" August smiled strangely, leaving him racking his brain without figuring out August's origin.

He glanced to the side. Newt and Tina, seeing him confront Grindelwald, began comforting Credence. Tina had helped Credence once before, so she was kind to him, and Credence could hear her words.

"Why would a wizard like you associate with them? You should have nobler ideals. I believe we can discuss this." Recruiting talent was also part of his plan. Judging by the power of the spell from a moment ago, if he hadn't dodged it, he probably would have been decapitated, and the casting was silent, which was very rare.

Such a powerful wizard was exactly the subordinate he needed, and the other party was very young. As long as they were interested in his proposal, he could undoubtedly bring them under his command with his rhetoric.

Graves didn't care about Newt comforting Credence there. Rather, he wished Newt could calm him down. Once Credence returned to his human form, Graves had many ways to trick him.

He suddenly felt the desire to recruit talented wizards like August. As for the Tina sisters beside him, only the mind-reader could be useful; the older sister was useless. Newt was Dumbledore's favorite student, and there was no way he'd join him. He knew his old friend's psyche perfectly. He even suspected that Newt's presence there was at Dumbledore's behest.

"Nobler ideals? My previous ideal was to be a rich person who just loafed around doing nothing," August said with a smile, secretly circulating his magic.

"Money? No problem." Graves smiled.

"That was my old dream. Now I just want to unveil that mysterious veil! [Magic Cut]!"

Suddenly, August waved his staff, and another blue sword abruptly appeared, aimed at Graves' waist.

"You want to fight? Then I'll give you a fight!" Graves had a premonition and dodged the attack again. At the same time, he waved his wand, and a bright light struck August.
