Chapter 4 - Unlucky Sickness

Time flew quite fast, after five years I had already started to talk and understand a little bit of that strange tongue they were speaking, maybe a normal isekai-ed genius of any novel would have understood and analysed that language in a flash, but sadly I wasn't that intelligent.

My family was a kind one, my parents played with me and my two little brothers often tried to make me laugh making dumb faces (they weren't really good at that), my sister on the other hand always stayed quite far from me, keeping her distance, she was cold and often rude when I tried to approach her.

Once I started walking I finally acquired the possibility to look at myself on the mirror (if you could call a big piece of broken glass coming from a noble house that), the 'mirror' was one of the many things that all inhabitants of the village had to share, when finally came my time I took a while looking a myself, I had long light brown hairs similar to those of my father, my eyes were also brown and essentialy I was indeed quite good-looking for a child from a backwater village, all the boys of the village were enchanted by my beauty and that made my sister just slightly jealous, and me disgusted, inside I was still a man and a straight one.

I also began to wander around that new world, I managed to completely explore the house and I also took my first real steps around the small village I lived in, I didn't want to keep being closed in that damn crib, me and my family lived in a border village without name of the so called Empire of Khalvion, more accurately we were under the government of a noble house called Efris, I couldn't learn anything more than this, there didn't seem to be a single person capable of reading in the entire village.

The elders told me our village like many others border's villages was born only under the necessity of having a strategic point where to let the army rest in case a conflict erupted with the kingdom of Avden, the only problem was that only a couple years after the village was built and was in its early stages the Kingdom fell for political reasons and many little city-states were born from its ashes, useless to say those small city didn't really pose a problem to the Empire so the many border's villages got abandoned and all resources that were going to be used to better them got relocated on the already prosperous Central cities.

The house of Efris had many little villages and even one medium-sized city under his control so we weren't really that much of a focus for the noble family, the chief said that the last time a noble visited the village was before he was born, the chief in question was an old man, around his seventies, he also said that that visit happened only on a whim of the young master of that time.

Just as things seemed to get better for a moment, just when I started to think that my epic adventure was going to start my non-existent luck struck, just a year and an half after I got out my house I caught something, a disease, nothing happened at the start, other that slight headaches and dizziness.

Soon my eight birthday came and those peaceful days became only a memory, the headaches evolved into frequent nosebleeds, soon I began vomiting blood and my health began to get worse with each passing day, the reason for that was unknown, in our remote village doctors were impossible to find, even the regular cities had just an handful of them, and they all costed quite the gold.

I was already smaller compared to the other children my age and this sickness didn't help, at the age of nine it got so bad that I needed to lay most of my time in bed and I couldn't play with the other kids, their laughter and smiles made me quite jealous, many villagers started to call me a cursed child or something like that, not that I cared.

The fact that many other children from near villages began disappearing after my birth didn't really help these voices, my mother started losing all of her customers while my dad had to work all day just to gather enough money to let us survive.

My once always cheerful brothers, the twins, were always preoccupied by my health, helping me even with the most basic chores, my sister grew colder towards me, she often called me a curse without realizing that I could understand her, probably she started to hate me because I made worse the already terrible situation of the family.

Another year passed in the constant pain that the sickness brought me, I found out that the more I moved, the worse the sickness became, it made me feel as if my bones were going to shatter and my blood vessels burst, sometimes during the nights when a full moon could be seen the pain was less, it could be endured better.

Some wandering "doctors" tried to heal me to no avail, they were all scammers that finding in my situation quick money decided to launch themselves, they all gave the same answer *sorry, but I am unable to heal this child, this malaise seems to attack his soul, he will survive at Max another year, all you can do is start to prepare for the funeral* after reciting these great helpful words they would always ask for their payment without showing any sign of remorse, I asked my parents to stop searching for such people since they were useless, but their hope was too great to listen to me.

Guess that I was pretty much fucked, no hope was left for me and I knew that, my mother tried her best to make me laugh and smile "my little star, why are you so down, what do you think of giving me a little smile ?" She often asked with a kind expression, I could see how frustrated and weak she became, she knew she couldn't really help me and also she gave me her portions, the least I could do was smile for her sake, even when the pain was unbearable.

My father was also worried about me, but his work took almost all his energies, he often got directly to sleep after coming home, and who could give him fault.

One night he came to my bed his eyes full of tears, he probably thought I was sleeping, he gently put his hand on my forehead and trembled, he carefully stroked my brown long hairs, I felt pity for him , I couldn't expect to understand at full the feeling of a parent that know he is going to loose his own daughter.

At my eleven birthday I felt that I didn't have much left to live, my conditions worsened again, if before I could move a bit now even that was impossible, my lower half became numb and unresponsive, my veins began to take on a dark color, as if they were rotting inside of me.

It was one of the few day when all the family was together, father had a free day since it was the birthday of the Noble's son that governed the area where we lived, and in occasion for such event everyone had a free day from work.

I was watching as my sister and the twins fought for a little wooden toy, I had never seen such a childish side of my sister, well at least it was fun to watch, while they argued father and mother stood outside of the house, they had just gone out a few minutes earlier after someone knocked at the door, they were talking with someone I was quite sure about that.

I tried to listen what they were talking about, but I wasn't exactly in the state where I could just move and listen with the ear glued to the door, after what seemed to be an eternity something moved and the door slowly started opening, a loud creaking sound followed as the wooden old door got fully opened.

A short man was accompanied by my parents towards me, he was short, not too much, but still as short as my mother, his back was slightly hunched and he wore a damaged doctor's vest, his eyes were covered by a thick pair of glasses, he seemed to have lost all his hairs and the only ones I could see were the ones of his beard, behind him a beautiful woman with icy blue eyes and long blonde hairs stood silent.
