Chapter 21 - Velmorra’s Stand

Chapter 21

The earth groaned under the weight of incoming monstrosities.

The fog had thickened again—no, not just fog. The Dark Fog, corrupted and crawling like a sentient tide, slithered across the broken outer districts of Rootwake. It didn't just mute sound. It devoured it. Light bent around it. Courage shrank before it. And from its suffocating folds came five massive figures.

Each was a towering fogling—mutated well beyond the norm. Their sinews were laced with bone-armor, and crude weapons made from uprooted trees and shattered stone bridges hung from their warped limbs. Crimson light pulsed in the back of their throats as they howled, their mouths jagged and too wide.

They surged toward Checkpoint Embercross—the final defensive bastion before Rootwake's inner sanctum.

Adventurers scrambled across the barricades. Horns blared warnings. Glyph towers flickered erratically as mana faltered under the Dark Fog's pressure.

A Boulder-class fogling hurled a stone the size of a cart. It smashed into a shield platform, sending three defenders flying. Cries filled the air—pain, panic, desperate spells half-cast.

The barrier trembled.

And then—

She arrived.

A ripple of heat. A metallic roar.

From the fractured ward-stone tunnel emerged a beacon of gold and flame—Velmorra Stonebranch, Guildmaster of Rootbound. Her mythsteel armor glowed from within, every seam inscribed with living runes that hissed with forge-heat. Her hammer, Sunwake, shimmered with a light born from volcanic crucibles. Her shield radiated resonance from deep-crusted corestone.

The ground itself trembled under her boots.

> "This line does not fall!" she roared.

Her voice, amplified by command glyphs, boomed across the chasm.

And then she charged.

> [Skill Activated: Emberpulse Strike]

Flames ignited beneath her feet with each step, superheating the stone walkway as she vaulted forward. She struck the lead fogling low in the knee—her hammer carrying the full force of momentum and runefire.

There was a crack like a bell tolling through a cavern.

The fogling buckled. Bone and smog burst from its joints. The creature howled, staggering backward.

Another swung a twisted iron beam down at her.

> [Skill Activated: Rootlock Shielding]

Triangular glyph-anchors surged from beneath her boots, embedding into the earth. A dome of braided barklight and stone flared into being—halting the blow mid-swing. Sparks exploded. Mana screamed.

Velmorra stepped through the fading field, hammer spinning like a wheel of sunfire.

> [Skill Chain: Star-Iron Reverb > Sunforge Breaker]

The head of her hammer split into heated arcs, and she brought it down into the fogling's chest with a two-handed slam. Light exploded outward—white-gold, radiant, searing. The beast's ribcage ruptured. Its core flared visible for a moment before detonating inward.

The shockwave knocked two foglings off-balance.

But more came.

A third behemoth charged.

Before it reached her, a massive stone arm intercepted it.

> "I stand between the soil and shadow!" bellowed Granek, Leo's summoned Vanguard Golem.

> [Skill Activated: Ground Slam]

Granek brought both arms down into the ground. A seismic wave erupted, lifting the brute partially off its feet. Chunks of earthen armor shed from Granek's back—cracks forming under pressure.

Two more foglings flanked him.

One clubbed him across the shoulder.

> [HP: 540 / 900]

Granek grunted, spinning to absorb the next strike.

> [Skill Activated: Earthen Guard]

His legs rooted deeper into the ground. Stone plates folded across his limbs like living armor, hardening. He stood fast, trading blows with the two monsters.

Above, a sapphire blur split the smoke—

Tarra.

She landed on a fogling's shoulder with balletic precision. Her cloak flared. Gauntlets hummed.

> [Skill Activated: Quartz Infused Strike]

One punch to the neck. A second to the jaw hinge. Each impact caused crystal-lined veins to shimmer in her arm.

> [Enhanced Combat Matrix Engaged]

[Analytical Scan: Cervical Gap – 89% Vulnerability]

> [Skill Chain Triggered: Quartz Reverb Combo – Level 1 Unlocked]

Her movements became a rhythmic blur—blows landing in calculated sequence. The fogling's neck cracked audibly, limbs seizing.

She vaulted off its head mid-blow, twisted in midair, and drove a punch straight down through the top of its skull.

> The fog exploded like brittle glass. The beast collapsed.

From the ridge above the wrecked glyph tower, Leo took a deep breath and steadied his rifle.

> [Skill Activated: Aetherpulse Rifle – Snipe Mode]

He timed it perfectly. As a fogling raised its arms, he fired between its eyes. The bolt tore through fog, skin, and bone.

> "Go for the core!" he shouted.

Velmorra heard.

She surged again, boots blazing with molten fury.

> [Skill Activated: Aegis Recast]

Armor plates re-formed mid-stride. Her shoulder, previously cracked, sealed with a hiss of steam and light.

Her hammer swung upward in a fiery arc—

> [Sunforge Breaker – Direct Hit]

The chest caved. Fog peeled back like tissue.

The core—exposed, pulsing.

Tarra lunged.

Granek charged.

Leo fired.

CRACK.

The core ruptured.

The fogling disintegrated.

One enemy remained.

Larger. Smarter. It turned to flee.

Velmorra raised her off-hand.

> [Skill Activated: Seismic Chainbind]

The ground ruptured. Chains forged of rune-light and tectonic mana burst upward, wrapping the creature's limbs. It thrashed—snarling, shrieking.

Velmorra marched forward, step by step, shield raised.

Her hammer glowed hotter now, runes pulsing like a furnace heart.

She swung with full force—

> [Skill Activated: Sunforge Breaker]

The hammer crashed into the exposed chest. The creature's body rippled—smoke, bone, and corrupted sinew tearing apart.

Then—silence.

Only the hiss of evaporating fog remained.

Ash drifted downward like snow.

Adventurers emerged from cover, some limping, some dragging the wounded. Weapons were still raised. Eyes darted toward the mist, expecting more.

Granek staggered but remained standing.

Tarra landed beside Leo, one shoulder dented, her systems humming with strain. Her eyes flickered blue.

Velmorra planted her hammer into the ground, steam rising from her scorched armor.

> "This line doesn't break," she said softly.

Behind her, the mist still churned.

But for now—none crossed.

The guild had held.

Rootwake endured.
