Chapter 9 - Gates (1)

[Personalized Cadet Profile Installation — Complete.]

The message blinked on my Smartband screen.

I stared at it for a second, then shrugged.

"Well, that's done."

I stretched a little and picked up the pajamas the school gave us. Just a basic set with the Atlas Academy logo on the sleeve. Nothing fancy, but it looked comfortable.

I changed in the bathroom, came back out, and flopped onto my bed.

Before sleeping, I decided to check what that flash drive actually did.

The Smartband—or SB for short—is one of the coolest things here. It's like a full computer packed into something the size of a bracelet. I could probably play high-end games on it while walking. Instead of a screen, it uses a floating hologram from the band itself.

If I could bring one thing from this world back to mine, it'd be this. No question.

"Let's see what it added…"

I opened the home menu.

A new icons and updated apps sat there on the screen.

Recommends exercises, combat simulations, or study routines based on your class and fighting style.

Also suggests sparring partners and weak points to improve—no stat numbers involved.

"That's helpful, I guess..."

I turned off my SB.

Closed my eyes and then fell asleep.

[07:47 AM]

[Bullseye] +20 points

I'm starting to get the hang of this thing.

Right now, I'm at the training facility—just a short walk from the main building.

Why am I here this early, you ask?

I woke up at [06:11 AM].

When I got to class, the room was empty. Ji-Hyun wasn't even awake yet—probably still knocked out from yesterday's space-jump.

So, I made him some porridge with whatever I could find in the shared kitchen. Left it beside his bed with some nausea meds, then headed out.

With nothing else to do, I went back to my usual seat in the classroom and played some games for about 39 minutes. But eventually, boredom won.

So here I am—taking shots at the target range, racking up points before class actually starts.

And that's how we got to this point.

"After messing around with my gun for a while, I finally understand how Jake's ability really works."

In the game, Jake's ability to use different weapons was just a minor feature—something a little more flexible than the other characters. Most characters could only use one weapon type based on their class and fighting style.

But Jake? You could equip anything in your inventory.

It wasn't that impressive in-game. But here? In reality, it's a completely different story.

Jake doesn't just equip every weapon—he's already mastered all of them. Sword, spear, bow, gun—doesn't matter. He can use anything he gets his hands on like a pro.

And the results speak for themselves.

[240 points]

I fired 12 times. I hit 12 bullseyes.

The only thing holding Jake back is that stupid 30% stat restriction. Without that, he'd probably be the strongest in the entire academy.

"...Yeah, that's enough training for now. Time to head back to class."

◇◇◇

At the classroom.

"And if we add Agatha's equation to this, we'll be able to—"

Ring rang. Ring rang. Ring ring rang rang.

"Alright, cadets. That's all the magic mathematics for today. See you soon," the teacher said, closing her notes and stepping out of the classroom without a second glance.

"Freaking finally."

Han Seora slumped over her desk. "I think I almost died of boredom."

"It's not that bad," Ji-Hyun replied, flipping his notes shut.

Seems like no matter what world you're in… students still hate math.

Magic Mathematics was a nightmare. An upgraded, arcane version of regular math that didn't just deal with three-dimensional space—but went into the fourth dimension. Concepts like spell geometry, magical mass equations, and probability manipulation made the subject feel more like torture than education.

And yet, in this world, it was just another normal class.

I swear, this world wasn't built for normal people.

...Though strangely, I understood most of it.

Guess that's Jake's intelligence stat at work.

Suddenly, an instructor in a sleek battlesuit rushed into the classroom.

He paused at the front, catching his breath. After straightening his posture, he addressed us with a clear, commanding voice.

"Good evening, cadets. Today, you'll be entering the Gates. You'll be divided into teams. The school has already handled the assignments—there will be 25 teams total, each consisting of four cadets… except for one team, which will have five."

I guess it's finally starting, huh?

◇◇◇

The students were gathered at the Gate Field—a specialized zone built for one purpose: farming Gates.

Gates are rifts in space, acting as doorways between two worlds—Earth and Archana.

Archana is vast. Ten times the size of Earth, its landscapes are brutal: unforgiving weather, swarms of monsters, and terrain humanity has barely scratched the surface of. To this day, only 31% of Archana has been explored.

____

Its regions are classified into five major zones:

The Jungle

The Sea

The Maze (or Dungeon)

The Sea of Flame

The Dark Continent

___

It was the Architect, a genius from the early days of Atlas Academy, who discovered a method to artificially open Gates—and eventually developed the technology to farm them. That's how training facilities like this came to exist.

All around me, students were gathering in front of the glowing leaderboard display. For now, it listed teams by number.

Let's see where I ended up.

___

In each team, cadets are given specific roles:

Leader

Support

Tank

Long Range

___

I scrolled through the display until I finally found mine.

___

Team 11

1. Kylen Noor — [Leader]

2. Jack Tarak — [Tank]

3. Victoria Astermont — [Support]

4. Amano Karin — [Long Range]

___

"You've got to be kidding me…"

Why did they assign me as the leader?

Is it because of my class?

If that's the case, then they definitely picked the wrong guy.

I've never been a leader—not once in my entire life.

…Well, whatever.

Guess we'll see how it goes.

To be continued.
