Chapter 8 - chapter8: when truth burns

There were truths that whispered. There were truths that knocked gently on your heart, hoping to be let in.

And then… there were truths that shattered everything.

Seraphina felt like she'd been walking through her life with blindfolds on. And now that the cloth had been ripped off—now that she'd seen what had always been lurking in the shadows—she couldn't unsee it.

She was the child of a vampire and a werewolf.

Not just any vampire. Not just any wolf.

The Blood Seal and the Moon Crest.

The two ancient marks that had never, ever been found on one being. Until her.

And somehow, her body carried both.

Her wrist still tingled from the night before, from where the mark had glowed during the dream that no longer felt like just a dream. She remembered the way the moonlight had wrapped around her. The way blood had surged under her skin.

The voice in the dream had said she would either make the world kneel… or burn.

She sat on the roof again, knees drawn to her chest, watching the sun rise over the forest. The quiet didn't soothe her like it used to. Not after what Eryn had confessed.

"You were never supposed to know," Eryn had said, voice trembling. "But fate doesn't care what we want."

Seraphina had demanded more. And Eryn, after a long silence, had told her about the night she was brought to the pack's edge—wrapped in cloth stained with blood, a baby no one claimed.

"They left you with nothing but the crest glowing on your skin," Eryn had said. "And a warning. That the child of dusk would bring ruin."

Seraphina's chest tightened. Child of dusk. She had read those words again and again in the book Eryn tried to burn.

But Eryn hadn't destroyed it fast enough. Seraphina had found it again, this time under the floorboard in Eryn's room.

It was written in an old tongue, but some pages had been translated by Eryn's trembling hand. And one thing was clear.

She was the prophecy.

The girl every clan feared.

The one they were all watching—some waiting to kill her, others waiting to use her.

And Vael…

She didn't know what to think of him. The boy had shown up out of nowhere, told her everything in just a few cryptic sentences, and disappeared. And yet his words echoed louder than anything anyone else had ever said.

You are more.

No—he didn't just mean stronger. He meant different. Dangerous. Needed.

A part of her wanted to scream. Another part wanted to hide.

But neither option felt right.

Not anymore.

The air shifted suddenly. She smelled something sharp on the wind. Blood and metal.

Then came the sound—low, steady footsteps.

Her body moved before her mind caught up. She leapt down from the roof just as the door burst open.

Eryn stood in the doorway, eyes wide. "Get inside," she whispered.

Seraphina froze. "What's going on?"

"They're here."

They?

Before she could ask, figures in dark cloaks appeared from the trees. Their steps were too smooth, too silent.

Vampires.

Not the kind she'd read about in stories. These ones didn't glitter. They didn't charm. They hunted.

And Seraphina could feel it—they weren't here for peace.

She backed up as one of them stepped forward, lifting his hood. Pale skin. Red eyes. A strange insignia branded on his neck.

"The Marked One," he said, smiling like it was a title she should be proud of. "You've finally awakened."

Eryn stepped in front of her. "She's not going with you."

But the man laughed. "We don't need your permission."

He raised his hand.

And the other vampires rushed forward.

Everything happened too fast.

Eryn shifted—half-wolf form, her teeth bared, claws flashing—but she was older now, slower. One vampire slammed her into the wall, and Seraphina screamed.

"STOP!"

Her pulse roared in her ears. Her skin burned. She didn't even think—she just felt.

Power surged from inside her.

Light burst from her wrist.

The mark glowed bright red and silver, and for a second, everything stopped.

The vampires stared.

Eryn's eyes widened.

Then, like a pulse of sound, a shockwave exploded from her body.

The nearest vampire flew backward. The others shielded their eyes.

Seraphina stood in the center, glowing. Her heartbeat thundered, and something ancient stirred inside her.

She wasn't helpless.

Not anymore.

The lead vampire recovered first. "So it's true," he muttered. "The seal has awakened."

He looked at her like a collector admiring a rare gem.

"You don't know what you are yet," he said, voice low. "But you will. And when you do, you'll understand why you don't belong in this pathetic place."

He vanished in a blur of speed. The others followed.

Seraphina dropped to her knees. Her body was trembling.

Eryn was on the ground, bruised but alive. She crawled over and pulled Seraphina into her arms.

"I'm sorry," Eryn whispered. "I should have told you sooner."

But Seraphina wasn't listening.

Not really.

Because the words kept echoing:

You don't know what you are yet.

And she didn't.

But she was ready to find out.

Later that night…

She sat by the river, arms wrapped around herself, trying to slow her thoughts.

She heard the crunch of leaves behind her and didn't need to turn to know who it was.

Vael.

"You look like someone just met the reaper," he said quietly.

She didn't laugh.

"Why did you tell me?" she asked instead.

Vael walked over and sat beside her, just close enough to share his warmth.

"Because you were running out of time," he said. "And I'm not the only one looking for you."

She looked at him, really looked.

"Who are you, Vael?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out something—an old pendant, shaped like the moon, with a single red stone in the center.

"My mother gave me this," he said. "She died protecting me… from the same people hunting you."

Seraphina reached for it slowly.

It was warm to the touch.

Connected, somehow.

"We're the same, you and I," Vael said. "Born from something the world tried to erase."

She didn't respond. But she didn't pull away either.

And that was enough for now.

As the moon rose, she whispered to herself, "They're coming for me."

And Vael, without hesitation, replied, "Let them come."

Author's Note:

The prophecy is no longer just words—it's unfolding fast. What did you think of Seraphina's power awakening? Drop a 🔥 if you're ready for the war that's coming. And tell me… do you trust Vael?
