Eva was still awake when Alex arrived, curled up on the couch with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She had been staring out the window for hours, trying and failing to stop her mind from circling back to the boy. Donald. His son. His charm just as disarming as Alex. Meeting him had unsettled her in ways she hadn't expected. She should tell Alex. She knew that. But the weight of his warning—he is not a part of this relationship—kept her silent. And how could she bring it up now, when Alex himself seemed determined to abruptly reshape whatever they had into marriage?
"I thought you would be asleep," Alex said as he stepped inside.
"I was waiting for you," Eva answered, unfolding herself from the couch. "I think we need to talk."
With a sigh, he loosened his tie. "If it's about what I said last night… I am sorry. It was a moment of weakness."
