Kaya's hands were shaking.

She hated that they were.

She stood near the edge of the town, close to a stretch of broken docks and rotting warehouses. The smell of salt and old wood hung in the air. Waves slapped against the pillars below, steady and uncaring.

She swallowed and tightened her grip on the cane Rael had given her.

Breathe, she told herself.

Slow. Careful. Don't panic.

Rael had trusted her enough to let her go alone.

That mattered.

A footstep echoed behind her.

Kaya froze.

A man stepped out from behind a collapsed warehouse wall. He was broad-shouldered, thick-necked, with scars crossing his arms and jaw. His weapon—a heavy iron mace—rested lazily over his shoulder.

He grinned when he saw her.

"So you're mine," he said. "Name's Marrow. Captain said you'd be the easiest."

Kaya's chest tightened.

"I—" She stopped herself. Talking wouldn't help. Rael had told her that. Act first. Think second.

She lifted the cane and took a step back.

Marrow laughed. "Cute. You think that stick's gonna save you?"

He charged.

The First Mistake

Marrow moved faster than Kaya expected.

The mace slammed down where she had been standing a second earlier, smashing the wooden planks apart. Splinters flew. The shock traveled up her legs even though she hadn't been hit.

She barely avoided it.

Her heart hammered wildly.

Too fast. Too strong.

Marrow swung again, wide and brutal. Kaya stepped back instinctively—but her foot caught on loose debris. She stumbled, barely keeping herself upright.

"Already slipping," Marrow mocked. "This'll be quick."

Fear surged up her throat.

Then Rael's voice echoed in her mind.

Minimal movement. Weight placement. Redirect, don't resist.

Kaya clenched her teeth.

She forced herself to stop retreating.

Redirect Step

Marrow charged again, confident now. Too confident.

Kaya shifted her weight—not back, not forward, but sideways. Just enough.

The mace passed inches from her chest. She felt the wind of it. She planted the cane and pivoted around it, using it as a point of balance instead of a weapon.

Marrow blinked. "Huh?"

She didn't attack. She moved.

Another step. Another pivot. Each motion small. Controlled.

Her fear didn't vanish—but it stopped ruling her.

Marrow snarled and swung again, faster this time. Kaya repeated the movement, redirecting herself just enough to avoid the strike. Her breath came fast, but she didn't lose rhythm.

"Stop moving!" he barked.

She didn't answer.

Survival, Not Victory

Kaya knew something important.

She couldn't beat him head-on.

She wasn't Robin. She wasn't Vivi.

She wasn't here to overpower him.

She was here to last.

Marrow growled and rushed her again, trying to pin her near the dock's edge. The sea churned below, dark and unforgiving.

Kaya felt panic spike.

Don't freeze.

She stepped forward instead of back.

Marrow hesitated—just for a fraction of a second.

It was enough.

Kaya slammed the cane into his knee. Not hard. Not powerful. Just precise.

He stumbled with a curse.

Kaya retreated immediately, breathing hard.

Marrow stared at her, surprised. Then he laughed again—but this time it wasn't relaxed.

"Okay," he said. "You're annoying."

Pressure Builds

Marrow attacked relentlessly now. No more taunts. No more playing around.

Strike after strike hammered the dock. Wood cracked. Pillars splintered. The sound echoed across the water.

Kaya dodged. Stepped. Redirected.

Again and again.

Her legs burned. Her lungs screamed. Her hands ached from gripping the cane.

She made mistakes.

Once, she moved too slow and the mace clipped her shoulder. Pain exploded through her arm and she cried out, nearly dropping the cane.

Marrow grinned. "There it is."

He raised the mace high.

Kaya forced herself to move despite the pain. She rolled, barely avoiding a killing blow that shattered the dock where her head had been.

She lay there for a second, staring at the sky.

I can't stop.

She pushed herself up.

Watching from Afar

From a distant rooftop, Rael watched silently.

He didn't move.

"She's scared," he murmured. "But she's not breaking."

His fists clenched slightly.

Good. That's enough.

But he still didn't interfere.

Turning the Fight

Marrow was breathing harder now. His swings were still powerful—but slower. Sloppier.

Kaya noticed.

She focused on that.

Every time he missed, she repositioned him. Drew him closer to the dock's edge. Let him destroy the ground beneath his own feet.

He didn't realize it.

"You're running out," Marrow snarled.

Kaya shook her head, breathless. "You are."

That made him furious.

He roared and charged one final time, lifting the mace for an overhead strike.

Kaya waited.

Waited.

Then stepped aside.

She hooked the cane behind his ankle and twisted—not with strength, but timing.

Marrow stumbled forward, off balance. The rotting dock gave way under his weight.

The mace fell from his hand as he crashed down, barely catching himself on a beam instead of falling into the sea.

He looked up at her, shock written across his face.

"You—!"

Kaya pointed the cane at his throat, hands shaking again—but this time from adrenaline, not fear.

"Stay," she said quietly.

Marrow froze.

Aftermath

Minutes later, townsfolk cautiously emerged from hiding. They stared in disbelief at the defeated pirate executive, trapped and disarmed.

Kaya leaned on her cane, exhausted.

She felt sick. Tired. Shaky.

But she was standing.

Rael appeared beside her silently.

"You did well," he said.

She looked up at him, eyes wet. "I was scared."

He nodded. "Good. You listened anyway."

She laughed weakly. "I don't think I could do that again."

Rael smiled slightly. "You can. And you will."

Kaya looked back at Marrow, then at the town.

"For now," she said softly, "I'm glad it's over."

Rael's gaze drifted toward the island's interior—toward where the pirate captain waited.

"It's not," he said.

But he didn't say it out loud.
