Chapter 2 - That Morning

The weak morning light, filtered through grimy windowpanes, did little to illuminate the chaos that greeted me as I stumbled out of my bedroom at 9:00 AM.

Our small house, usually a bastion of Ma's meticulous order, was a battlefield. Furniture was overturned, drawers hung open like gaping mouths, spewing their contents across the floor, and shards of a porcelain vase, once a vibrant centerpiece, glittered ominously under the dust-laden air. A cold dread seeped into my bones, a premonition of something terrible.

I scrambled back to my bedroom, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs, and yanked Susan from her slumber. Her eyes, still heavy with sleep, blinked in confusion as I roughly shoved her into the cramped, dark closet. "Stay here," I hissed, the words tasting like ash in my mouth, "Don't make a sound."

Then, propelled by a desperate hope, I began my search for Ma. Her room was a disaster zone, her worn wooden dresser disemboweled, its few trinkets scattered and trampled.

I searched every room, every corner, my desperate cries of "Ma!" echoing in the suffocating silence of our ravaged home. Each unanswered call amplified the gnawing terror in my gut. The house, once a source of comfort, now felt like a tomb.

Returning to my room, I cautiously opened the closet door. Susan, her face pale and streaked with tears, stared back at me, her wide eyes reflecting a fear far beyond her years. "The soldiers took Ma!" I shrieked, the words tearing from my throat, raw and agonizing.

"The soldiers took Ma!" I pulled her out, forcing her to confront the devastation of our home. Her breath hitched, a tiny, wounded sound, as she took in the desecration. "Ma, where are you?" she whimpered, her voice barely a whisper, as if afraid to break the suffocating silence.

We sank to the floor amidst the wreckage, two small figures dwarfed by the enormity of our grief, our sobs the only testament to the shattering of our world. We sat there, huddled together, until, in the depths of despair, a spark of an idea flickered within me.
