Rachel froze for a second.
Kellan's handsome face, half-shadowed by his short black hair, looked scarily serious. His cold, sharp features showed no emotion at all.

He said he'd be good to Cora for the rest of his life.
He actually said "for the rest of his life"!

Rachel was shocked. Completely stunned. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.
Her head felt like it was spinning. She didn't even know what to say. Her heart started racing and her face turned red without warning.
Who wouldn't be moved by words like that? Even the coldest heart would melt.
"You really mean it? You'll be good to Cora for the rest of your life?" Rachel repeated, her voice soft and disbelieving.
There was doubt in her tone, but also something like hope.
She stared into Kellan's deep, dark eyes, searching for something, some kind of answer hiding behind them.
