The Forbes magazine cover felt surreal in my hands - Damien and I photographed against Manhattan's skyline with the headline "Power Couple: How the Crosses Built a Billion-Dollar Empire While Redefining Business Partnership." Six months ago, Elena had been trying to have me declared mentally incompetent. Now we were being featured as America's most successful married business team.
"Think they captured our good side?" Damien asked, settling beside me on our penthouse sofa while I reviewed the article that would establish Cross-Sterling Industries as one of the country's most influential private corporations.
"They captured the side that survived psychological warfare and built an international empire," I replied, noting how the photographer had emphasized both our individual strength and our obvious partnership. "Though some of these quotes make us sound more calculating than we actually are."
