The portal opened up in the middle of the town and as they stepped out, Ryn gasped, looking around. The town was glowing.
Lanterns floated down the stone streets, lit with fireflies. Stalls bustled with laughter and music. Dragon-shaped candies, glowing fruits, and charm merchants filled the air with their warmth. Ryn's eyes darted from one thing to another, wide as a child's who was seeing the world for the first time.
"I didn't even know it could be this lively," he breathed. "This is beautiful," he commented.
"Most students miss it," Veyr said. "Too busy training, and without an alpha's permission, most students don't get the chance to leave the academy."
Ryn huffed a small laugh and grabbed Veyr's hand. They stared at each other for a moment and smiled.
